  1. Reis says:

It must kill Republicans that the Bible used to birth the Grand Old Party was used by a Democrat for swearing in.

  2. David says:

They are a beautiful family and that is a picture for the history books.

Reis, it is because the GOP stood alone for minority rights that President Obama could stand there. It makes us proud.

  3. pandora says:

David, are you really reaching back to Lincoln… bwahahahahahahahahahaha!

  4. FSP says:

Lincoln? Try Dirksen, 100 years later vs. the Dem “Southern Bloc.”

  5. anon says:

They couldn’t come up with a better headline than “Obama”??

Those little girls are absolutely adorable. They’re going to charm America to its knees.

Personally, I can’t wait to see the NJ’s book on Biden’s “rise to power.” I smell Cris Barrish all over. Hope it sells more copies than his Capano book did.

  6. anonone says:

Yes, Dirksen – with another repub and 2 dems (Humphry and Mansfield) were able to break the Southern Block filibuster and get the bill signed by DEM President Johnson, who pushed hard for the Bill.

Johnson and Humphrey’s support of the bill allowed Nixon to attract disgruntled racist dems to the repub party, his famous “southern strategy”.

BTW, Lincoln was a racist, as were many in his day. Although he considered slavery immoral, he also felt that whites were superior to blacks and did not favor equal rights. Sad but true.

  7. pandora says:

And what would Dirksen think of his party today? A party who developed the southern strategy, courting the very same Southern Block Dirksen and others defeated.

  8. anonone says:

    Good point, Pandora.

  9. FSP says:

    1964 CRA — Voting percentage

    Democrats – 63% YEA, 37% NAY
    Republicans – 81% YEA, 19% NAY

Not to mention that the filibuster was conducted by a current sitting member of the Democratic caucus.

    Facts are stubborn things.

  10. FSP says:

And Pandora, in re: #7, we’re a long way from comment #3, aren’t we?

  11. cassandra_m says:

And much of that Southern Strategy would not have been possible without key bits of the Dixiecrat crew becoming Republicans.

So yes, the Dems’ Dixiecrat wing certainly were an embarrassment in their commitment to liberty and justice for all. Unfortunately, that wing and their brethren in resentments found a comfortable and long home in the Republican party. Look at the map of the last election — Republican strength is basically in the old Dixiecrat geography.

  12. pandora says:

No Dave, we aren’t. We’re now at 1964 – 44 years ago! And what we’ve established is that the GOP is still stuck in the past, and stuck with the Dixiecrats.

    So… my bwahahahahaha stands.

  13. FSP says:

I love the yarns being weaved here. Love ’em.

    Delegation Makeup, 111th

    Arkansas House: 1R, 3D
    Georgia House: 7R, 6D

    Louisiana House: 6R, 1D
    Maryland House: 1R, 7D
    Mississippi House: 1R, 3D

    S. Carolina House: 4R, 2D
    Tennessee House: 4R, 5D
    Texas House: 20R, 12D
    Virginia House: 5R, 6D
    W. Virginia House: 1R, 2D

    Total Southern House: 61R, 61D

    You were saying?

  14. anonone says:

The CRA was then signed into law by a courageous Democrat, President Johnson who is supposed to have said that because of this bill “we have lost the South for a generation.”

Since then the repubs have done nothing but pander to racists and religious bigots, and only repubs oppose the voting rights act renewal whenever it comes up.

    And your party’s racism continues:

“In that incident in August 2004, Voting Section Chief John Tanner sent an e-mail to Schlozman asking Schlozman to bring coffee for him to a meeting both were scheduled to attend. Schlozman replied asking Tanner how he liked his coffee. Tanner’s response was, “Mary Frances Berry style – black and bitter.” Berry is an African-American who was the Chairperson of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights from November 1993 until late 2004. Schlozman forwarded the e-mail chain to several Department officials (including Principal DAAG Bradshaw) but not Acosta, with the comment, ‘Y’all will appreciate Tanner’s response.'”

Yeah, FSP, facts and recent history are stubborn things.

  15. cassandra_m says:

This is what I was saying:

Look at the map of the last election — Republican strength is basically in the old Dixiecrat geography.

    It is still true.

Expand your cherry-picked dataset to include the Senate, Governorships and state legislatures and get back to me.

  16. anonone says:

    You were saying?

Your racist repub southern strategy is now all you got left and it is starting to fail you. Your party is a regional party now

What we’re saying is that we won. And your policies of racism and division have lost. Have another nail for your coffin.

  17. FSP says:

One incident in 2004 by one person is a fact?

    Oops, forgot where I was.

“Expand your cherry-picked dataset to include the Senate, Governorships and state legislatures and get back to me.”

I’m 90% sure the numbers would actually increase in total, but I ain’t got the time.

  18. FSP says:

“What we’re saying is that we won.”

I remember a different party saying the exact same thing in 2002. Talk to me in a few years.

  19. Quofvorpzop says:

They may also sell OEM hardware, which usually comes wrapped in nothing but a static bag and is accompanied with very little documentation.
