Comment Rescue: Protackian Clear Thinking (?)
Mike Says:
Take alook around the country, the budget mess in all the states is bi partisan. It is not a matter of D or R although you seem fixated on the R part of the equation.
Hmmmm… I wonder why? Oh yeah I know, George W. Bush is responsible for the economic mess the whole country (and large portions of the world) is in. The states didn’t all somehow mysteriously and simultaneously get into budget problems. That is obvious.
But here is the thing, I have to imagine that there is a great deal of scientific thinking and rational thought involved in piloting an airplane.
So while I could understand wingnut true believers like Dave Burris or Christine O’Donnell could look at all the evidence of the abject failure of Republican economic policies and say that it adds up to success, I’m a little surprised to hear Protact saying that “up” is actually “down.”
I sincerely hope that Protack does not bring this same willful rejection of reality to his day job.
It`s Always protacks strick adherances to DOGMA that drives me crazy, he`s an intelligent man who trys to keep himself informed but he uses the same formula that made catholics throw Galilio in the slammer. It`s the closed mind kind of thinking that castle is guilty of. Before you decide what`s right and wrong you first must ask what would Regan do. It`s so obvious this it what protack adheres to. If he ever cuts that looose he really could become an asset to our state instead of a liability.
You are giving Protack too much credit for having a rational method.
Protack’s 50-step program he campaigned on wasn’t exactly GOP orthodoxy. He has always dropped in a few standard talking points here and there but lately it is 100%.
Thank you for the discussion so here is some rational thought for you. Many state budgets have grown more than GDP growth, more than inflation and more than population growth, combined. That pattern is illogical and unwise.
The simple fact is you want to blame Republican policies but true Republican policies were never followed at the national level or at the state level. Republican policy would support economic growth to support revenues for rational budget increases.
I do not subscribe to dogma , but I deeply believe in simple cold hard facts.
Governor Markell knows these facts and I hope he can educate Delawareans of the dire straits we are in now. His challenge will to offer logical solutions and to persuade his own party.
Pres Bush did not propose, write or approve any of the state budgets in the US. Yes, he made several mistakes with the Federal Budget but the states made this mess on their own.
The consistent and ongoing budget growth in the states has made the deficits a structural problem. The spending you approve today gets built into the next year and years to follow.
Here in Delaware spending went up 81% when Carper was Governor. During Governor Minner’s time we spent 2% more on average every year more than inflation and population growth.

“The simple fact is you want to blame Republican policies but true Republican policies were never followed at the national level or at the state level. Republican policy would support economic growth to support revenues for rational budget increases.”
There it goes. Republicans weren’t being Republicans yadda…yadda.
C’mon, Mike. Even you can do better.
Mike please understand that states have had to take more of a role in providing for the helpless and most needy due to fedaral program cuts by Bush. There are handicap people who would have been set adrift due to budget cuts by the bush administration if the states had not stepped in, and who foots nthe total bill for unemployment, it`s the states. I really cannot accept your arguement that this is the fault of state legislators. I.ve been following the policys of the governator in california and he has been busting it to keep a handle on things.; Now get of this bull shit reason to kill the stimulus package PLEASE.
Mike, the policies of growing the federal government by 33% in his first term (Bush) is hardly republican philosophy-agree?
Adding a huge entitlement (PartD) without making Medicare solvent was not Republican Philosophy-agree?
Keeping large parts of the War In Iraq off Budget was not Republican Philosophy-agree?
I could go on but the voters expressed their opinions on these items last November.
Now, we will see what Democratic answers are at the state level and the federal level. If the Stimulus Bill is any indication we are in for some very tough times.
Enjoy the Super Bowl.
Both spending and revenue totals increased for states in almost all categories. Total state spending in fiscal 2007 was more than $1.4 trillion, including both operating and capital expenditures. Compared to the previous year, that figure reflects a 7.1 percent increase in state spending from all sources, with state funds growing by 7.8 percent and federal funds by 3.3 percent (see Tables 1 and 2). Estimates for fiscal 2008 reflect an 8.2 percent increase in total state expenditures, with state funds up by 7.3 percent and federal funds 10.6 percent higher. Since 1987, total state expenditures have increased by an average of 6.5 percent.

Cold hard facts, since 1987 state expenditures have gone up an average of 6.5%.
“Mike, the policies of growing the federal government by 33% in his first term (Bush) is hardly republican philosophy-agree?”
Mike, forget philosophy. Let’s deal in simplest terms here. Under the leadership of George Bush and a Republican Congress for the majority of Bush’s years, this mess was churned out. Ergo, Republicans caused this mess, whether or not the philosophy was Republican.
All some of us are asking is for you to own it.
Now, there was certainly Democrat complicity throughout most of this, so those bitches deserves almost as much blame. Why the Republicans deserve the most blame is they held the White House. That’s where the scales tip, IMO.
Mike, the policies of growing the federal government by 33% in his first term (Bush) is hardly republican philosophy-agree?
Such BS.
Republicans got everything they wanted out of Bush and now they want to say that he was not an example of Republicanism in action.
Why’d you vote for him then dummy?
Like I said – I hope his fantasy world thinking does not bleed over into his day job.
Mike ; figures are correct, but review the budgets of Bush and take notice to all the cuts that had to be absorbed by the states, if you google federal budgets as well as the democratic responce to them you will see how moronic your thinking really mis. It`s not that states wanted to spend this much it`s that they were forced to by the phoney federalization policys of the Bush administration. Your smarter than that Mike, As a fellow marine get your butt squared away.
Every Child Left Behind…forced on states, unfunded.
Two Wars and Bush CUTS taxes!
Enron, Exxon, Chevron billions in profits while gouging our citizens.
Enhanced globalization (sent more jobs overseas), enhanced the Hb visa to bring more foreign workers to take good paying american jobs.
Halliburton robbed the country blind with no bid contracts (and cost plus thefts).
No regulation of Wall street banksters, permitted Hedge funds (which most people still dont have a clue what they really are), allowed corporations to have a PO box in the Caymans to avoid paying taxes.
The list can go on Mike. Bush his crooks and cronies are absolutely reponsible for this financial meltdown along with some blue dog democrats (some of whom are still in office), which still have to be dealt with.
Thanks for the update.
Here are the facts on Federal Aid to the states as a per cent of the budget. There has not been a decline in dollars or percentage. Some of you regard a situation where a scheduled increase of 6% becomes 4% as a cut of 2%.
1960- 12.9%
1978- 35.4%
1981-24.9%
2005-42.5%

I voted for Bush because of the other choices, Kerry and Gore.
To Mike Matthews. You asked me to own something I disagreed with. I freely acknowledge the Republican shortcomings and so did voters.
Signs that Jason misses Charlie Copeland…
1. He tries to debate Mike Protack in a serious manner.
I’ll take whoever the DE GOP gives me. It looks like Protack is the new elder statesman.

Well thanks for emailing me back. Sheez.
Aw man, my comment was classic! I forgive you for deleting, as I know that walked the public-private line, but next time…my six year old will kick your 😯
Seriously, if you saw how much “me” time I had this weekend, you’d know why I didn’t respond. I am still battling sick kid syndrome at home and I can’t access those emails from work.
