This is some lazy ass reporting  by the News Journal’s Sarah Gamard.   I mean how does she get through the whole thing without ever mentioning the fact that  Delaware’s minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.23 per hour? TWO dollars and twenty three cents a fucking hour. Is it possible that the laughable peanuts the Restaurant Association members want to pay their servants has anything to do with the situation?

Fuck you, Delaware Restaurant Association and your preposterous drivel that News Journal reporters relay uncritically.   Fuck you very much.  Also, get your shit together, Sarah. If you couldn’t find someone who could have easily debunked the Chamber’s horse shit, I’d say you were’t looking very hard.

Why Delaware companies are struggling to fill jobs one year into the COVID pandemic

Unemployment benefits could be contributing to the phenomenon. Delaware does not require people to search for work while on unemployment insurance.

How to vote in Tuesday’s school board elections

Delaware school board elections are Tuesday. Here’s everything you need to know about voting in a contest that historically sees low turnout.

Seriously. Delaware school board elections are TODAY, with seats up for grabs in every district but Indian River.

The reason these “jobs” remain open is that they pay poverty wages you cannot live on and offer no benefits (not that you could afford them on what they pay). As ever we have the money for the super rich to make a billion dollars in one day but we can’t pay the people who do the actual work. You get what you pay for, and it even applies in this land of predatory capitalism. Waiting to see if the Republican elite changes it’s collective greedy mind and learns to love immigrants, the hicks in the sticks that vote for them or not.

  3. BTW, in order to have gotten the $15 minimum wage bill considered at all, sponsors had to agree NOT to include any adjustments to the tipped wage.

We’re talking DEMOCRATS who insisted that the tipped wage not be considered.

Just thought you’d like to know.

I get it–the $15 minimum wage is a heavy lift. But the officers of the Delaware Restaurant Association need to look themselves in the mirror to see who is responsible for the shortage of workers willing to work shit jobs.

Because an industry has been run under sweatshop conditions for generations is no reason to continue those conditions indefinitely.

I truly don’t understand the unwillingness to go to no-tip dining. If you boost prices 20% it’s the same cost to customers, except for the cheapskates who stiff servers. The problem is the owner makes his money off those cheapskates while the servers go without.

The problem, of course, is that the peers of “our” representatives are the owners, not the workers — has anyone in the GA worked for an hourly wage without union protection? — and that’s where their sympathies lie. They think it’s better for people to have jobs with sub-subsistence wages than no job at all.

All politicians, regardless of party, think that giving people jobs solves everything, because capitalism to them is like water to a fish.

Owners: But..but…but, we’ll have to close.

Me: Good. That space will be opened up for a better place that doesn’t run off of sweatshop economics.

“sponsors had to agree NOT to include any adjustments to the tipped wage.”

May be a necessary concession with this GA. Keep working on electing progressives – we’ll deal with tipped wage another day. It probably would be easier to take on the restaurant lobby on tipped wages in a standalone bill once $15 becomes law.

DINO tales: Ed Rendell, the neoliberal gasbag former Philly mayor and Pa. guv who can’t get enough of himself on TV, has endorsed the non-progressive candidate in the Philly DA primary instead of incumbent reformer Larry Krasner. He doesn’t have to do that — he’s not running for anything, so he doesn’t have to stay on the right side of atavistic white voters. He’s just a dick.

If people wonder why I dislike DINOs more than Republicans, it’s because Republicans don’t pretend to share my values or ask me for money.

  5. Just voted at Brandywine. Line was pretty long, but moved quickly, maybe 15-20 minutes. 2 machines. I’m sure the turnout is much greater than in previous school board elections.

Kim’s greeter was optimistic, said that about 2/3rds of the people who went by him said they were voting for Kim. I figure, the larger the turnout, the better our chances.

Lonely at 7:30 at Maple Lane but my Hood may be the highest RWNJ in my area. When I greeted for Larry and Sarah on Election day the in person turn out had lots of red hats and guys snarling at me:).so I’m feeling ok!

Drove through BHS, decided to go to Carrcroft Elem. No line there, walked right up. If pressed for time, some may want to check the smaller schools off the beaten path.

    • Paula says:

4pm today at Brandywine, line still out the door, like 13-15 people/couples deep. All wearing masks, keeping distanced. Poll worker inside said it’s been like that since 8 am. This is way more people than I’ve ever seen for a general election back in the before-times.

      • My biggest concern was that a stealth candidate would sneak in due to a lack of public interest.

I’m feeling pretty optimistic right about now b/c it looks like the public became quite engaged in this race.
