New York magazine’s Jonathan Chait says most people, liberals included, are failing to appreciate how much legal jeopardy the Last Guy is in now that the New York AG’s office is looking at criminal charges over Trump Org tax dodging. Chait warns that prosecutors need to prepare the country for the unprecedented move of indicting a former president. I must agree — otherwise the celebrations could get out of hand.
Such speculation increased yesterday when the NYAG is investigating Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Org CFO, for tax fraud. Consensus among legal pundits is that they’re trying to squeeze him into flipping on Lord Fatass.
The fight over vaccine patent waivers is far from over, and Big Pharma has raised an army of lobbyists to insist that America as we know it will cease to exist without patent protection. As if that would be a bad thing.
Remember when Keegan-Michael Key used to portray Obama’s anger translator? Apparently he really could have used one. According to an upcoming book by Edward-Isaac Dovere, in private Obama referred to the Last Guy as a “madman,” a “racist, sexist pig,” a “fucking lunatic” and a “corrupt motherfucker.” Can’t say he’s wrong.
In the process of ripping the know-nothings who typify Republicans in Congress, former Congressional staffer Mike Lofgren notes that more than 100 of these assholes sleep in their offices, mostly pleading poverty. As Lofgren notes, when actual poor people plead poverty, these assholes don’t hear a word of it.
Decrepit boy wonder Bill Gates is getting thoroughly dragged in the media since announcing his divorce, most damningly by highlighting his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Just a reminder: He’s no genius. The little shit never invented anything in his life. His mom got him a contract with IBM and he purchased the shittiest operating system on the market to back up her empty promises, then used monopolistic tactics to try to force everyone to use the shittiest operating system on the planet. This is payback for all those years he’s spent pretending he’s a harmless philanthropist.

If I’m most people, I’ve become inured to thinking that there will be any consequences ever.
Me, too. That’s partly Chait’s point. The rest, though he doesn’t state it quite so plainly, is that the MAGAts will lose their shit when it happens.
In short, if he skates again, it will be for the reason it’s always been — it seems like a lot more trouble to hold him to account, and who needs the aggravation?
I understand “the authorities” thinking that the can of worms is too big, the chaos could be too chaotic, but that is a shitty reason for giving up.
They are like GOP Reps in congress. There will be worms-a-plenty and chaotic chaos regardless.

Trump will outright declare a civil war rather than turn himself in or allow himself to be incarcerated/arrested. It’d work too. We already saw the soft open.
Those in the position to truly hold him accountable know he can (If not lose) certainly start one.
My most realistic biggest hope is that his only source of income becomes donations from the mob and they all go bankrupt sending him money to spend on Golden showers and his Russian owners

Atrios made a good point yesterday: For months leading up to Philadelphia’s primary for district attorney, the media was awash in stories about a backlash that was supposedly building against reformist Larry Krasner because gun violence is up, supposedly because he is holding the city’s notoriously racist police force to account.
There were no stories — absolutely none — that indicated he would win the primary with two-thirds of the vote.
Such journalistic malpractice — boosting the voices of the cops and the racists in the white working-class neighborhoods, ignoring the reality on the ground — shows why the media is quite often the problem.
Thanks to America’s famed sliding scale of “justice” Trump will not be charged let alone prosecuted. The rich don’t go to jail here. Civil war if he is charged? Some things are inevitable, as noted we’ve already seen “the soft open” in January and are likely to see more regardless of what happens. Let’s see if the there really is an investigation into that fateful day of 1/6 and the thousand and one failures of the government that went with it.
