Irony eludes them…

While the modern GOP has basically turned evangelical churches across the country into electoral precinct headquarters, the DE GOP is in a snit because Rev. Christopher Bullock will be preaching a sermon about the immorality of Mike Castle’s continued support of George Bush’s open ended occupation of Iraq.

Apparently, the suggestion is that sermons on this text are illegal if the intended leader addressed in the sermon is a Republican US Congressman, in this case Mike Castle. Although the point of the rally and sermon is to deliver the popularly-supported and minimal message that we should begin a phased withdraw of our troops from the killing fields that is Iraq, the Delaware Republicans are raising the specter that Reverend Bullock’s Canaan Baptist Church should possibly lose its tax exempt status for daring to call Mike Castle to task for his irresponsible and indefensible position that a timetable for withdraw from Iraq isn’t needed.

You see, you have to be pro-war or your message is political. cuz…you know Jesus was all about bombing the crap out of everyone. You can look that up.

    It is what it is.

A man who is planning on running against Castle is using his church to help him get an early shot in.

They couldn’t find a preacher with no plans to run for office to give the sermon at a Soros-funded, MoveOn-organized political rally aimed at undermining Mike Castle’s support.

Please. This is as transparent as it gets.

I think Dana does a great job calling bullshit on your argument.

I will only add that, as a Christian, I am glad that a fellow Christian with Bullock’s gifts has taken an interest in the transparent immorality of Castle’s support for Bush.

If that interest in the immorality of Castle’s ongoing and unshakable support for Bush leads Revered Bullock to run for office in order to change things in Washington – so be it.

  3. Viva Freedom of Speech. I just hope this new found support in the church speaking out on the moral issues of the day extend to abortion.

I am for Freedom of Speech regardless of the content. Are you?

  4. One the other hand, there is former senator Fred Thompson sitting back and getting the mileage from the media because he has not yet announced as a presidential candidate. Is anybody not happy with the pre-campaign advantage by Fred’s daily exposure as a radio program host?

Churches have always been free to take a position on abortion and speak on it every day if they want. They do it all the time. The IRS has no problem with this as long as they follow the rules.

  6. “Righteous Judgment”

    Matthew 7:1-5

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

“A man who is planning on running against Castle is using his church to help him get an early shot in.”

Bullock is thinking about it. That’s not the same as “planning” except when the possible opponent is a Repub Congressman who actually said once to Bullock “I depend on the African American vote to get elected.”

That’s why the Repubs have their undies in a bunch about a rally (not at a church building) at a private school.

Dana — I assure you no one on our side is worried about Chris Bullock as a candidate.
