Song of the Day 7/24: The Velvet Underground, “I’ll Be Your Mirror”

It’s ironic, really. I don’t think Donald Trump has had a true friend in his life, yet here he is, hoist on the petard of his supposed friendship with fellow perv Jeffrey Epstein. The two certainly had a relationship, but calling it “friendship” probably stretches the definition too far. A better analogy might be symbiosis. What attracted these two to each other? They probably saw in each other the same thing they saw when they looked in the mirror.

Despite the Velvet Underground’s reputation for dark and controversial subject matter, their first album contained several songs that could have fit an MOR singer’s repertoire. Lou Reed, who knew a thing or two about toxic co-dependent relationships, wrote this one about Nico, the model/singer thrust upon them by producer Andy Warhol.

I’ll be your mirror
Reflect what you are, in case you don’t know…

When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you’re twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please, put down your hands
‘Cause I see you…

I’ll be your mirror (reflect what you are)
