Usually when we get to late June, there’s very little activity of interest. The serious candidates have filed, the field is more or less set.
The usual June is not this June, however. And that’s…
just the way I like it!
Let’s start with something I don’t know (although I just might know more than you–but not all of you):
1. What Happens Now In RD 3? We’ve all read the stories about Josué Ortega. He has yet to file for reelection. It is safe to say that what once was sort of a formality is now very much in question. Will he file? Whether he does or doesn’t, he certainly is vulnerable in this overwhelmingly D district. As in 10,017 D; 1332 R; 5714 I. I had been apprised that perhaps some news would break as early as today. But, state offices are closed for Juneteenth. Look for at least one major development in the next few days. It will be good news. For now, though, we have to keep it on the QT. Two people who likely will be unhappy?: Speaker Mimi and Bud Freel.
2. It’s Official! Both Stephanie Bolden And Nicole Poore Will Face Great Challengers! Now on the ballot–Keonna Watson, who is facing Nicole Poore in SD 12; and Michelle Booker, who is facing Stephanie Bolden in RD 2. Talk about adding by subtracting!
3. Say Goodbye To Madame George? First-term NCC Councilperson Valerie George has basically sucked up developer donations and has voted like it. She has proven to be nothing but a hack. Her newly-filed challenger is anything but. His name is Syam Kosigi. Get to know him. This from 2021:
The pandemic that’s raging across India is infecting at least 300,000 people a day and killing thousands, producing heartbreaking images of smoky cremation pyres — and driving a wave of concern and action among Indian Americans in the Philadelphia region.
Local groups, community leaders and doctors-turned-organizers are raising money and pressing congresspeople to ship emergency supplies to the world’s second-largest country. Sewa International, the Hindu-faith-based humanitarian organization, has raised $4.3 million toward a $5 million goal.
This week it’s sending India 400 oxygen concentrators — devices that remove nitrogen from the air to provide oxygen gas — and hopes to deliver an additional 2,000 soon. Oxygen supplies there are severely limited.
Desperately ill people are being turned away from hospitals, many of them dying as they plead for treatment that doesn’t come.
“The level of devastation in India is being seen, and people are moved,” said Syam Kosigi, a Delaware-based vice president of Sewa, which also aims to provide food and medicine to families, orphanages, and senior citizens.
Here’s his bio from Sewa:
Syam Kosigi is a consultant in the financial industry in the US. He has a deep passion for service activities and is associated with Sewa International for many years. He is active in local organizations in Delaware and Pennsylvania. He practices Yoga, likes Indian classical music, and is a keen student of world history. He lives with his family in Newark, DE.
Doesn’t sound like the kind of guy who will need bundling parties from developers and their attorneys. Which immediately sets him apart from George, who has made no secret of her willingness to sell her vote to developers and, of course, data center billionaires.
4. Matt Powell-‘I Alone Can Fix It’: This guy ran for the RD 8 D nomination back in 2020, finished third in a three-horse race, with 26.5% of the vote. Rae Moore won the primary and the general. He filed for the primary in 2024, but dropped out. He has once again filed to primary Moore this September. Perhaps he’ll stay in this time. Oh, the ‘I alone can fix it’?
Following conversations with numerous constituents, it has become clear that District 8 is in dire need of effective representation.
The community is seeking a candidate who embodies the following qualities:– a strong work ethic;– demonstrates regular attendance;– transparency in campaign finance reporting;– honesty regarding personal and professional credentials;– a history of financial responsibility;– respect for and adherence to the House of Representatives rules, procedures, and leadership;– responsiveness to constituents’ concerns; and– a commitment to prioritizing community interests above personal agendas.I firmly believe that I am the sole candidate in this race who can fulfill these community needs. Having supported the incumbent representative for three consecutive election cycles, I have come to realize that she has failed to deliver during her tenure. Drawing parallels with baseball, I am invoking the “three strikes and you’re out” rule, which I deem fair. Now is the opportune time to advocate for a return to quality standards in Dover!
Let’s unite and say, “No more of Ms Moore. As a matter of fact, vote for Matt!” Let’s go!!!
I may not come from a political background, but I bring something just as important: real-world experience, a fresh perspective, and a deep investment in the future of our community. The decisions being made in Dover affect my family just like they affect yours, and I believe our elected officials should never lose sight of that.I’m running because I love this community, I believe we can do better, and I’m ready to fight for the future our families deserve.”Delaware has had enough of “marry your cousin Morrison” and is ready for change and a representative that is there for EVERYONES best interest, not wasting time on bills that pander in order to advance their political career.
Powell has made a fool of himself multiple times. He was kicked out of the First State Dinner a few years ago for being drunk and disorderly (and verbally abusing people). Honestly, his attacks on Matt Meyer during the Governor’s race should ensure that Rae Moore gets some face time with Matt on stages.
This review of BBC Tavern that he made is a real classic case of “How can he not see it?”
Honestly, he may be the least stable person in Delaware politics.
Yeah, I’d forgotten about that incident at the dinner.
Pretty sure this is former Southern NCC Councilwoman Patty Powell’s son. Hadn’t heard about the intoxication problems.
To borrow from Tom Waits, he doesn’t have a drinking problem ‘cept when he can’t find a drink.
Powell’s employment record is, to put it mildly, spotty. As in 7 jobs in eight years, with three lengthy gaps in his employment record.
No jobs shown from May 2020 to May 2021; Oct. 2021 to March of 2022; and Oct. 2025 to April of 2026. Guess he really NEEDS that legislative salary.
Not to mention, the jobs don’t show a guy moving up in the legal universe.
Matt Powell…..has been thrown out of more bars and fundraisers than is acceptable. His social media is nothing but drunk tirades and random comments.
He is so unstable words can not even explain.
I heard he was escorted out of the DE Democrat Party dinner a couple of years ago because he was so drunk.
