Song of the Day 10/4: Matthew Sweet, “Divine Intervention”

The baseball playoffs have entered their second round. In what has become an annual tradition, the Phillies didn’t make it past the first round, but one surprising team did: the Chicago White Sox.

Last year the Pale Hose lost more than 100 games, just like the year before that and the year before that. This year they made the playoffs, and a lot fans are speculating it’s thanks to their best-known fan, one Robert Francis Prevost. People know him better as Pope Leo XIV.

Is divine intervention responsible? Well, the Sox haven’t lost yet in the playoffs, winning their first series two games to none and winning their first game against Cleveland as well. They’re not favored in this series or, if they advance, any of those that follow, so we’ll see how far appeals to the Big Guy take them.

Matthew Sweet called on “Divine Intervention” on his third album, 1991’s “Girlfriend,” and it became his first one to reach the Billboard 200, at No. 100. It helped that he called on ace guitarist Richard Lloyd for the blistering solos on half the songs, including this one, which led off the album.
