Song of the Day 10/17: Violent Femmes, “Gone Daddy Gone”

Pay attention, class, this will be on the test: A Zacharia is 5/11ths of a Scaramucci. Perhaps the White House will do better in their next press secretary search if they extend the list of job qualifications beyond “must look like Natalie Harp’s Doublemint twin.”

Word on the street is that Harp pushed for Zacharia’s hiring because they both once worked at far-right news cesspool OAN, meaning this was a case of the blonde leading the blonde. Where she is now we can only guess, but she’s gone, daddy, gone.

The Violent Femmes formed in Milwaukee in 1981 and got their big break when James Honeyman-Scott of the Pretenders saw them busking outside the concert venue before the show. Their eponymous debut album in 1983 featured their best-known song, “Blister in the Sun,” but “Gone Daddy Gone” was the first single released. It didn’t chart.

In 2006 Gnarls Barkley, the joint project of singer CeeLo Green and producer Danger Mouse, covered the tune for their debut album, “St. Elsewhere.” It didn’t chart then, either, but it came with a video that got some airplay on MTV.
