Around the Horn Friday: Return of the Geek Edition

Filed in Uncategorized by on August 3, 2007

Big shout out to Jason for covering for me a few times in the past few weeks. I wish I could say I was on vacation, but rather I was working my ass off. I probably won’t be around this weekend either, as I am headin’ down to the Virgin Festival for some sweet sounds. I think I’ve been promised 27 virgins, but it doesn’t mention it on my tickets…

Let’s start the show with Tommywonk’s parts 1 and 2 of cycling hazards and road design. I can feel his pain. You really need a good country road to lay down some cycling miles and live to tell the tale. Speedy recover, my friend.

Speaking of roads, how about that Indian River Bridge? Mike has a horrible picture which he hopes scares the hell out of Carolann Wicks.

Over at Delaware Watch, Dana waxes philosophical about the predilections of his new political party. Specifically, the mediocrity that Hillary represents and how much the neocons seem to love it…

Meanwhile Nancy shows us that Obama seems to have a horse in the pro-nuke debate. Strangely, Hillary is wishy-washy on it.

Sanjay covers the new lapdog-from-across-the-pond with a caption contest. My caption: Hey Gordo, watch me drive us both off another cliff!

Kavips has been doing some digging in order to smack down Dave Burris and finds some interesting data in the annals of the state revenue reports. In the words of Ross Perot “Do ya hear that giant sucking sound?”

Speaking of Dave, the leading Mitt supporter (besides the magic underwear) has the gall to claim that Barack Obama is tanking because of a few small gaffes, quickly corrected. Meanwhile, Mitt still wants to double Gitmo… In other news, Dave is overjoyed that consumer confidence has now reached the level that it was under Clinton… Nice.

Joining the wingnut chorus is Duffy and Felix. It’s like having out own right wing conspiracy here in Delaware.

I do like the DWA post about Jack Markell’s new hot endorsement. I feel like moving just to vote for Melanie George Marshall. Also, there seems to be a certain level of sexual tension over at DWA, looking at the titles of the article he has some issues to work out.

Over at Liberal Delight, Ryan Mc is astonished at the people that seek advice from complete imbeciles. Me too.

Mat over at the soapbox is sorting out the candidates by their views on medical marijuana. Guess what? Mitt is uncertain…

Over at Mikes Musings, Mike has hit the 80K mark on the Prius. I do get a smug look about me when I pull up to get gas at $3 a gallon. Congrats, Mike.

Paul Smith has a post up about how a German government agency is promoting incest. I get the feeling (from a lack of evidence) that someone mistranslated the manual. Then again, I can think of at least one high ranking official at the Vatican that hails from Deutchland. Hmmm.

I think I have to check my meds. Ryan at JttR made some sense. Granted, he did so by linking to one of my favorite left-leaning magazines, Rolling Stone. Ethanol is a boondoggle.

Finally, Kilroy has a lot to say about the city of Wilmington staying out of Christina’s affairs. Personally, I disagree with Kilroy, the city of Wilmington is a constituent and the district has not been an honest broker in the past.

I’ll be rockin’ out in at Pimlico this weekend. But I promise to take some time to remember the 68,172 Iraqi civilians and 3,662 American soldiers kiled so that Bush could avenge a threat on his Daddy.

  1. Dave says:

“I think I’ve been promised 27 virgins, but it doesn’t mention it on my tickets…”

That’s inaccurate. You actually get 27 Virginians.

  2. liberalgeek says:

yikes. Could be worse. It could be West Virginians…

  3. delawareway says:

Mike wants to scare the panties off of Carolann – just sayin,

  4. jason330 says:

I tried to steer DWA that thread back toward the Markell endorsment.

But I left wondering who are the male “Hotties” are at Leg. Hall (Now that Atkins is gone).

I think in the interest of balance we should objectify and degrade the men according to looks too.

I guess my liberalism is showing.

  5. Dorian Gray says:

I’ll be a Virgin Fest as well – blowin’ off some steam. I was going to accuse you of being a buzz kill and ruining my vibe with all the macabre Iraq talk. But you’re right – as we party our asses off there’s some heavy shit going down. I’ll dedicate the 2 1/2 hour Sasha & Digweed set to the US Marines.

  6. Dave says:

I’m still waiting for you “fair and balanced” DL-ers to pounce on Barack for talking about unilaterally invading a sovereign nuclear nation.

Had anyone on our side said that, it would have been all you talked about for days.

  7. anon says:

unilaterally invading a sovereign nuclear nation.

… a country that most likely is harboring Osama bin Laden. Are the Republicans taking invasion off the table?

  8. Ryan S. says:

I’ll have you know, ‘geek, I’m a Rolling Stone subscriber.

  9. Dave says:

“… a country that most likely is harboring Osama bin Laden. Are the Republicans taking invasion off the table?”

Not publicly, unlike Obama with nukes.

  10. anon says:

Well, it’s moot anyway. Since Bush has destroyed our military readiness and weakened our armed forces, we no longer have the resources to finish the job in Afghanistan… capture OBL… or wipe out Taliban nests in Pakistan.

  11. liberalgeek says:

Ryan – Good to hear. I canceled my subscription of 17 years when Hunter Thompson killed himself.

  12. jason330 says:

Are you sure Thompson didn’t kill himself when he heard that you’d canceled you subscription?

  13. Mat Marshall says:

    I miss Thompson…

Although as long as we’re talking about Obama, I’ve never been a fan of the nuke. Of catching Osama bin Laden, yes… but not the nuke.

  14. Hube says:

Felix and Duff are “wingnuts” for laughing at Obama’s recent proclamation. A “conspiracy.”

Keep this in mind when the current admin. ever discusses an invasion of Iran, peeps. The proverbial excrement will hit the fan around here, you can be sure!

(Of course, Iran doesn’t possess nukes and isn’t an ally, but hey — what’s the big deal? Obama’s a DEM!)

  15. anon says:

Of course, Iran doesn’t possess nukes

They also don’t possess Osama bin Laden.

But what was Obama thinking? How dare he suggest invading a country that doesn’t have any oil!!

  16. jason330 says:

(Of course, Iran doesn’t possess nukes and isn’t an ally, but hey — what’s the big deal? Obama’s a DEM!)

    Hube,

So Pakistan is an ally? That’s news.

  17. Hube says:

Yes, Jase, they are. An imperfect one, yes, but Islamic fundie terrorism would be a lot worse if Musharrif (sp?) wasn’t in our corner.

anon: So, Pakistan has bin Laden? Is this intel as accurate as that which said Iraq had WMDs?

  18. oedipa maas says:

Isn’t it amazing how wingnuts have forgotten that OBL murdered 3000 Americans? Here is the referenced text of Obama’s statement:

“Let me make this clear,” Obama said in a speech prepared for delivery at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. “There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al-Qaida leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won’t act, we will.”

    If there is actionable intelligence.

Taking out OBL and his immediate campmates needs to be a priority and Musharraf needs to cooperate more on that front.

It is definitely fair to talk about how much that kind of action might destabilize Pakistan, but, let’s face it, they aren’t all that stable to start with. Their nukes are designed for and pointed at India. And besides, BushCo justified their Iraq misadventure on the threat of a nuclear cloud as a result of Iraqi nukes. Right?

  19. dh says:

I am/was a big fan of Obama, but given the implications of the above referenced speech, I don’t think I can vote for him in this primary with a clear conscience. I’m now leaning towards Richardson, which may be as good as handing the nomination to Hilary, but what are you gonna do? Although I honestly want to, I don’t think I’ll be able to talk myself into Obama.

  20. jason330 says:

    dh

It is early. You will talk yourself into and out of the Obama camp four more times befor pulling the lever.

    I will anyway.

  21. anon says:

All Obama is saying is that he will keep Bush’s promises to bring the terrorists to justice.

  22. Von Cracker says:

Obama! Please don’t take the Rethuglican’s boogey-man away! They’ll have nothing left to run on!

  23. donviti says:

you forgot the gays, they are almost as deadly as a terrorist

  24. G Rex says:

“I’m still waiting for you “fair and balanced” DL-ers to pounce on Barack for talking about unilaterally invading a sovereign nuclear nation.”

Fox is reporting riots in the streets in Pakistan over Obama’s statements…I hereby endorse him for 2008. If you don’t vote for him the terrorists win!

  25. Ryan S. says:

    A friendly challenge!

Let me know if you’re interested.
