So, will the GOP purge Petraeus now? I’ve noticed how many military people have come out against torture and against Guantanamo. Why do Republicans hate our troops?

I am not seeing the issue. Naturally the General would confer to ensure that what he is doing continues to be legal and proper. If we go by the Geneva Conventions, we don’t need trials for military captures to detain them only to punish them(which can be military tribunals) nor do we need to release them before the war is over. We can question unlawful combatants. I don’t see a difference from what we have been doing for the last 4 years. It seems like you all are moving closer to a third Bush term. I just hope that you get a move on before we endanger this country by the administration’s delay.

The General would like to see the closure of Guantanamo — something that BushCo gave occasional lip service to, but who were not concerned about doing. But he not Delusional David for nothing.

There was an ‘Admiral’s Revolt’ during the Truman Era when the follies of SecDef Louis Johnson put the Nation at risk. Careers were ended but Johnson eventually got the boot.
In period where there is no general war, high ranking officers need to play a lot of politics to survive and get promoted. Meeting some social quota may be more important than winning a battle.
We have people at Gitmo because we were trying to hold them in some kind of extra-legal limbo, remember? They put the prisoners at Gitmo and then tried to argue that Gitmo wasn’t U.S. territory so the prisoners weren’t subject to U.S. laws. That got slapped down by the courts.
Just as importantlu, General Petraeus countered former Vice President Dick Cheney’s recent claim that Obama’s administration had made America less safe.
“I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that,” said the general, who has served under both administrations. “I think that there is in fact a good debate going on about the importance of values in everything we do. If one violates the values we hold so dear, we jeopardize our troops.”
Personally, I believe Cheney’s “national security” issue is a set up. If we are attacked (8 years is a long time), he will use modest security changes as an excuse to blame Obama and the democrats for the attack, not the fact that we took our eyes off al-qaeda by attacking Iraq.
