Everybody Gets a Little Something

Filed in National by on July 1, 2009

Liberalgeek got his picture in the paper. State workers got 5.5% of the pay cut back. (Althought cynics might say that the 8% was thrown out there to get to the 2.5% cut)

NKS and the teamsters seemed to get a lot of what they wanted. (I could be wrong, but that’s how it plays to me on the radio anyway.)

This is a “day after” open thread.

  1. Geek in the newspaper! Congrats geek! Was he quoted?

  2. RSmitty says:

Look at A9 of the dead tree version…he’s the old man, right? 😉

  3. jason330 says:

    Just the photo.

  4. RSmitty says:

I posted this comment in the “WTF John” thread, but that’s kinda old now, so here it is again, on the sparkling-fresh new post:

OK, honestly, someone tell me how cutting school construction funds over this tax (alcohol) being passed is a good thing, let alone even the consideration of cutting higher education funding for two years in a row? Any takers?

  5. Tee hee. Geek has a good story about being older than he’s supposed to be.

  6. jason330 says:

He is texting me in the picture….. Something about how R2D2’s memory was not wiped when the driods were transfered to Naboo as I recall.

  7. Somebody explain to me why JK gets the blame for the failure of the alcohol tax and cutting of the school construction budget when he was not the only “no” vote. Why do the other “no” votes get a free pass?

  8. RSmitty says:

Actually, I think that was the message he sent me, still trying to seduce me into the Democtratic Party. He has no shame.

  9. RSmitty says:

I didn’t blame him, so my mistake if that is how it was conveyed. I’m talking big picture. Granted, he may be a target, because he was the lead figurehead in defeating the bill (and that he was with his public positioning), but it took more than him to say no. He also didn’t champion the ultimate response with the school funding cut, so, no, JK is not the sole bearer of the blame.

  10. jason330 says:

Why do the other “no” votes get a free pass?

The other no votes were all Republicans.

  11. anon says:

State budget cut 8%…. Dave Burris has been demanding budget cuts for years, too bad he gave up blogging after the legislative session, so we can’t go read his post about how happy he is he got what he wanted. I guess I’ll have to pop over to Charlie Copeland’s blog to read his joy and gratitude over the spending cuts. Surely Charlie will graciously thank Democrats for the cuts… I’ll go check.

  12. RSmitty says:

Oh my. Yes Republicans NO plus Kowalko’s NO equals defeated bill, fine. If you look at the rest of the bills, though, someone would have flipped. I wasn’t even bringing that up, except that was your defense of it. Also, let’s not forget that post yesterday of “WTF JOHN” where you (jason) held his feet to the fire for the very same!!!

Now, back to the question where I did NOT lay blame at John’s feet, but I asked generally:

OK, honestly, someone tell me how cutting school construction funds over this tax (alcohol) being passed is a good thing, let alone even the consideration of cutting higher education funding for two years in a row?

It’s a General Assembly question, not a Kowalko question…which, in retrospect, is what your response made it into!

    Sheesh! 🙄

  13. RSmitty says:

NKS and the teamsters seemed to get a lot of what they wanted…
Damn right they did and school construction funding suffers for it. WT-freaking-F?!
    (it’s a General Assembly question 🙄 )

  14. RSmitty says:

Liberalgeek got his picture in the paper.

I know someone else in there! pic link (go to pic #15).

Hey, Geek! Nice glasses you have, down on the end of your nose! 😛

  15. June says:

Wasn’t that UI in the picture also?

  16. ‘Bulo could’ve sworn that he saw a certain photogenic redhead in the paper this AM.

  17. RSmitty says:

‘Bulo could’ve sworn that he saw a certain photogenic redhead in the paper this AM.

psst…the paper did a B&W photo. Are you already drinking this AM and spill some of your red on the paper?

  18. jason330 says:

How did I miss that. (…maybe sitting 15 feet away from geek? )

Two rock stars in one picture.

  19. liberalgeek says:

Yes, I made the paper. I guess my exhaustion is the price of fame.

  20. Naah, ‘bulo just knows a photogenic redhead when he sees one.

  21. Yes, I was there. I forgive everyone for not noticing me. It’s hard to compete with the aura of the geekster.

  22. jason330 says:

I was reserving judgment, but the Delaware Reverse Political Barometer tells me that Delaware’s elected government worked exceedingly well last night.

  23. RSmitty says:

Spammer Protack. Well, at least you covered the whole GA in your rant minus the no votes. Will you take your concerns public over the GOP legislators who voted yes and refused to play that shut-down-the-government card that the most polarized of partisans insist upon? C’mon, Mike, come out with it. You just included GOP in that rant, so why be indirect when you’ve already opened the door? Name the names that pissed you off. I dare you. Yet, I don’t see that happening.

That was a very passive aggressive post on your tech-savvy (choke) blog.

  24. liberalgeek says:

Let me disabuse people of the idea that Kowalko’s no vote on the alcohol tax had anything to do with the school construction cuts. Guess what? They didn’t have the votes for the alcohol tax even if Kowalko switched last night.

Who chose the cut? Good question.

  25. RSmitty says:

Who chose the cut? Good question.
That goes along with my thinking (thanks, Geek). The only reason I asked why is this better than the alcohol tax is because the funding cuts were the result of the Bond Bill Committee reconvening after the realization of the loss of the alcohol tax revenue. That is how those two are related, not anything with Kowalko.

What I have been able to gather on my own is that this part of the bond bill was lumped in with the rest of the bond bill (lots and lots o’ stuff) and the ENTIRE bond bill breezed through both chambers with only two no votes coming from the Senate, that is it.

So, back to my original question, why is stopping a paltry per-unit alcohol tax a better alternative to leaving school construction funds be? (the latter – reducing the funds – was a direct result of the former)

  26. Lee Ann, Public Servant says:

Actually, Jason, state employees got 68.75% of their pay cut back. Most of the state employees I talked to today are embarrassed by the five extra days and two floating holidays. They were happy with a 2.5% cut and five unpaid furlough days. We really don’t want to be pitted against the rest of Delaware. Shoot, they didn’t even get rid of the health insurance double state share for married state employees. My health insurance premium soared 50 percent — from $7-something biweekly to $11-something. I have the HMO option, but my doctor happens to be on the list. I was willing to pay a lot more. Thanks, though, for the middle class tax increase. Way to PO the electorate.
