Birthers Causing A Problem…For CNN?

Filed in National by on July 24, 2009

CNN’s Lou Dobbs has been promoting birther conspiracies on his CNN and radio show and CNN has repeatedly debunked him. It’s apparently becoming a problem for CNN (they should be embarrassed).

In the wake of Lou Dobbs’ repeated claims on the July 15 edition of his radio show that President Obama needs to “produce a birth certificate” and that Obama’s birth certificate posted online has “some issues,” several of Dobbs’ CNN colleagues as well as other members of the media have debunked Obama birth certificate theories, often ridiculing those who embrace such theories as “nut jobs” who advance “ludicrous” claims that are “more conspiratorial than factual.” Indeed, according to the Los Angeles Times, CNN distanced itself from Dobbs’ comments. Reporter James Rainey wrote: “[O]ne CNN employee reminded me several times that Dobbs’ most pointed assertions were made on his radio program, which is unconnected to CNN.”

Nonetheless, Dobbs has continued to repeat the “birther” claims on both CNN and his radio show, stating on the July 20 edition of his CNN program that the birth certificate questions offered by “passionate supporters” “won’t go away because they haven’t been dealt with, it seems possible to, straightforwardly and quickly,” and saying on the July 21 edition of his CNN show, “We had people, including reporters from the LA Times, calling up because I referred to this. … Instead of calling the White House to ask why they didn’t do it, they’re calling me to ask why I said I don’t know what the reality is. No one does.” Additionally, on the July 21 edition of his radio show, Dobbs criticized “certain quarters of the national liberal media that are just absolutely trying to knock down the issue of President Obama’s birth certificate,” stating that they are “focused on being subservient and servile to this presidency rather than being inquisitive and doing their jobs with, you know, the White House.”

Why is this guy getting paid on a supposed news channel?

Jon Stewart does a funny takedown of Dobbs:

The Birther movement will henceforth be known as “The Kenyan Prince Birth Announcement Scam.”

  2. A. price says:

how about SarahPac flagship campaign 2012?

  3. Obama’s FUBAR policies are the bigger concern.

However, when I ran a Marine Recruiting station years ago the first document we asked for was a birth certificate or the applicant could not join.

Obama should simply produce the real document and provide an opportunity to shut up those who oppose him on this matter.

Or he can let it drag on and provide an excuse for criticism.

    Mike Protack

  4. jason330 says:

    He has you nit wit.

  5. Protack is now a birther. Thanks for making it clear that he has common ground with the mentally ill birthers.

  6. Geezer says:

Leader of the Delaware GOP Mike Protack perfectly illustrates the impotence of his party and conservative movement — while grown-ups have a seat at the table, he is reduced to bitter, content-free comments on a liberal blog.

What a sad, sad man. Think of all the second jobs you could be doing, Mike, to build up your famously kaput pension and slashed pay. Instead you masturbate here all day long. Sad.

  7. He secretly loves us, Geezer.

  8. Mike is right. There is a law pending in Congress to require documentation like a birth certificate when you file to show that you were born here and are 35. What reason shouldn’t it be passed?

Mike and I know that President Obama is legitimate or else Hillary would have knocked him off the ballot after New Hampshire. The state of HI has verified that the certificate of live birth by the President, which is not a birth certificate and does not have all of the information is backed up. The press conference was not covered by the networks. The President could have stopped this long before it had its own life. He didn’t want to. He is using it as a distraction. This controversy is 100% on him.

It is obviously a legitimate question because two different courts took it up on its merits. People who ask it are asking questions every American should have asked. The deal is that it has been answered. He qualifies so move on.

Your attack on Mike is sad. You take his words and twist them to what you know he doesn’t mean. You know that he unequivocally rejects the argument that President Obama is not a citizen. Yet you claim that he holds the opposite POV. Have you no shame?

  9. delacrat says:

    Protack,

It is a fact that Obama’s mother was a US citizen. Therefore it is a fact that Obama is a US citizen, regardless of where he was born or what a piece of paper says.

But none of that matters, because mere facts mean zilch to flag wagging nut bags.

  10. No, people who jump on this birther non-controversy have no shame. They are just doing it to score political points but have ended up validating the crazies.

Obama did indeed clear up any non-controversy back in 2007 when the crazies first showed up. He’s under no obligation to do it again. That’s our point – there is no controversy. It only exists in the imaginations of some Republican activists. The mainstream Republicans who encourage them are the ones who should be ashamed. But I think of the birthers like a plague – once they’ve been unleashed you’re not going to be able to control them. Look at what happened to Mike Castle. That should be a warning to you.

Obama had to prove his eligibility when he filed his papers to run for president. He doesn’t need to show you or any other crazy birther his birth certificate. That’s an invasion of privacy.

  11. anoni says:

“Obama had to prove his eligibility when he filed his papers to run for president.”

Great UI, those would be public documents. Please get a copy and post them here… You will be the hero that killed the Birthers!!!

  12. Geezer says:

Why would we want to kill the birthers? They represent the intellectual cutting edge of the Republican Party.

  13. Unleashed? They are not some foaming at the mouth crazies. They are normal people who have a right to their opinion. Oddly enough U. I. he just had to swear that he met the qualifications. There is no law that says he had to prove them. That is why some wish to change the law. It is irrelevant because Alan Keyes filed on a third party for President just so that he would have standing to bring this issue to court. If the court would have found otherwise, everyone would know it.

It is about to the point where we explain that both court cases seem to have been resolved in the President’s favor on its merits. He has the goods. He just wants to make fools out of some of his opponents to discredit them on serious issues. We may have to sit down and have adult to adult conversations with these people and tell them that Obama is setting them up according to the Marxist playbook. In other words, we just need to explain it language they accept. President Obama made up this to distract you then set you up so he can discredit you. It is all a Marxist deception so they can socialize America without attention. They would buy that conversation, I am not worried that we can’t channel their energies.

You have some pretty radical opinions but I don’t refer to you as a nutjob, crazy or wingnut. I agree with you sometimes and disagree other times. I don’t understand this impulse to demean. You never see Perry, Think123 or Noman act like that. They are great assets to the blogosphere because of their spirited thoughtful arguments.

Usually I am more motivated to respond to disagreements here because you guys go so far over the top. The fact is half of the time you are on the right track. The only thing that annoys me is when you make up disagreements by twisting someone’s words. You all have done it twice in two days. I will call you on it.

You know that Mike is not and has never been on record as a “birther”. Everyone has some idea that they hold which is mistaken. I don’t see any reason to disrespect the person and their other opinions. Mike comes from that same tradition. We are defending the dignity of the person and their right to express their opinion based upon the information they have. We are not defending the opinion.

  14. anoni says:

    as for invading his privacy…

Presedential candidates are expected to publicly release their:
    tax returns
    medical records
    college transcripts
(which is how we learned tha Bush had a better GPA than Gore and Kerry)

It is the lazey press that do the most to perpetuate “conspiracy”.

A Certification of Live Birth and a Long Form Birth Certificate are not the same thing. Being a “Natural Born Citizen” (the constitutional requirement) and being a Citizen are not the same thing. By blythly skimming over the story and getting the details wrong, they stoke the distrust.

  15. jason330 says:

I find it funny how someone who says Obama is really the President of the United States and not Kenyan keeps bringing this shit up and defending the foaming at the mouth crazies on the right.

  16. sillypoorperson says:

As Chris Matthews alluded too last night…

if this birther thing is true, Obama is an illegal alien and has been for his whole life. You’d think that at some point along in his career, the colleges he went too, the DMV he went too, the government offices he worked for would have caught the fact he isn’t a citizen.

    Mike protack is an idiot.

why aren’t we talking about getting me health care!!!

  17. Nothing kills the birthers. They’ve already explained away the birth certificate, the newspaper announcements and the announcements by Hawai’ian officials. That’s my point – facts do not help.

Anoni, I’ll post Obama’s filing info when you post George W. Bush’s National Guard records. I suggest you put in a FOIA request for the documents.

As far as those other records, those are only released because the campaign agrees to do it. They are under no legal obligation to do so. McCain only allowed reporters to skim his medical records. Palin never released hers.

There is no blithely skimming of the story. It’s been debunked over and over and over. The birthers won’t let it rest and Republicans have jumped on board because they think it hurts the president. It’s going to end up hurting them instead.

  18. My point exactly, Jason. Good point, sillypoorperson. I think we should talk about Obama talking about the Gates arrest instead, anything to distract from healthcare!

  19. Many do not produce all of those and they should not. It is none of our business what medical records or college transcripts say. I reject the tax returns stuff as well. Candidates need to have the guts to stand up for privacy and integrity one’s personal space. Why does the media want that stuff? It is not legally required. It is because they are lazy and don’t want to look for real t stories.

Now a birth certificate actually matters to prove 2 of 3 constitutional qualifications, but we don’t want to see that. No wonder the people with that concern don’t take the media seriously. It is hard for any rational person to do so.

  20. Speaking of Healthcare, why don’t you look into Singapore’s system. I did a post on it which could get you started. There is a place that has its act together.

  21. jason330 says:

David you have admitted that Obama is the legal President of the United States. Why do you keep defending these lunatics who think he was born in Kenya?

They have free speech rights to foam at the mouth and rent their garments, but why what do you get out of constantly making the point that you think Obama is the President and then agree with the psychos that Obama needs to prove that he is the President?

  22. I actually agree with you David that candidates should be subject to some privacy and shouldn’t have to release their tax returns, college transcripts or birth certificates. So why are you defending the birthers?

  23. Von Cracker says:

here’s the reason why you dumb fucks – RWR, Protack, David, et al. Proof is out there, and has been for years, but you refuse to take those facts into consideration when it comes to making a proper assessment. Why? Hell if I know; but what I do know is that that’s a symptom of poor judgment skills. And, for shame, it makes you an intellectual joke, un-serious even…so get the FUCK out of the seat, step away from the table and see yourself out the fucking door, you lying little children!

What’s next, Obama has cooties? Or maybe if you feed him after midnight…..

  24. pinstripe says:

    Try rounding them up.

  25. Von Cracker says:

btw – that felon liddy made himself to appear to be as much of an idiot than he is a criminal. why does he get a forum.?…oh yeah, i forgot – wingnut welfare. Chryo-freeze Liddy in the same room where the conservative aristocracy hides all those Beck, O’Reilly, and Coultier books that they overbuy in order to give the appearance normal people actually read those screeds!

  26. Von Cracker says:

and do what with them, pin?

public mocking is all they need, nothing more. geesh, project much?

  27. pinstripe says:

    Del Dem knows step 2.

  28. Talk about lunatic statements, Beck, O’Reilly, and Coultier buy what their own books by the millions to make people thing they are being read. Hey I have a couple of Ann’s books myself. Coulter is a good read, she is thought provoking and definitely provokative. I could barely follow Beck while driving around in the car sometimes, I couldn’t imagine buying his books until Common Sense. I have books from the left and right if they are good reads.

Now for the Important Stuff. Where is Around the Horn? The Pitch forks are coming out if we don’t get it. 🙂

  29. Paul says:

To all the birthers in La, La Land, it is on you to prove to all of us that your assertion is true, if there are people who were there and support your position then show us the video (everyone has a price), either put up or frankly shut-up. I heard Orly Taitz, is selling a tape (I think it’s called “Money, Lies and Video tape”). She is from Orange County, CA, now I know what the mean when they say “behind the Orange Curtain”, when they talk about Orange County, the captial of Conspiracy Theories. You know Obama has a passport, fooled them too?

  30. cassandra_m says:

Apparently the President of CNN is telling Dobbs that the birth certificate story is done.
