A Libertarian Question
Is there really any difference between Libertarianism and Anarchy? For if even polio vaccinations are an unwarranted Government intrusion upon the liberty of the people, then what isn’t?

I think Steve beat you to the punch, anticipating such ridiculous hyperbolic pseudo-inquiries :

Ironic that you raised this right as I hit the send button for a comment on that other thread.
No: there is a clear Libertarian argument for public health actions like childhood immunizations.
I would write it out in detail but I just did so in disowning Wendy Jones’ position on that issue here:

(Sorry, I usually try to make the arguments here, but I am shoe-horning this in on a workday and don’t have the time to repeat the whole thing.)
Anarcho-capitalists are not Libertarians, but they hang out around us as the closest people to their views.
Wendy’s vaccine theory, however, is simply loonie tunes.
Thank you, Steve. I’m going to read it later.
I just read it. Nice post, Steve.
Thanks Steve. I just read Wendy’s comment and didn’t see your post on it till now.
Tyler… you need to relax a little. Tone down the rhetoric a little. For your own health.
Libertarians who comment around here seem like absolutists to me so I don’t think the question was hyperbole.
The inability to tolerate levels of meanings and the complex “gray areas” of modern life tends to align them more Republicans and children than anarchists though.
I see vaccinations as a public health issue, and under the guise of public safety, personally. All information should be available prior to injection, and an informed decision should be made with adequate time to absorb the risk factors for complications and side effects.
This leads to parents actually taking the time to do their homework, and as I have been pointed out in the past here, my opinion in parental issues is pointless since I don’t have kids.
At any rate, they have the responsibility to do the homework and protect their kids.
All parties have an lunatic fringe. The LP’s are a little more visible since the LP is smaller in size.
Wendy’s opinions on vaccinations are just.. out there. I can’t agree with them, but I do understand that some drug companies are in cahoots with the FDA and there are some improprieties going on that could lead to mistrust of the system.
DD – I’m plenty relaxed, but honestly it is truly laughable that you, of all people here, would admonish me to tone anything down.
But really, thanks for the chuckle, buddy.
DD – Off topic note, I just posted an opinionated breakdown of the 19th questionnaire done by the WNJ. Some interesting stuff for Around the Horn Friday. Didn’t know if you swept my site yet.

Tyler: I aim to please.
Brian: I have already made note of your post for tomorrow’s ATH. I use Google Reader to keep tabs on you all, and your article is already “starred.”
