What’s Charlie Copeland Up To Today?

Filed in Delaware by on August 14, 2009

Maybe getting ready for his CRI board of Directors Meeting on September 14th? His Aunt and Uncle will certainly want to know where all the money is going.

Maybe reading over and approving blog posts written by the whack pack. Or perhaps musing about how chicken laced with chemicals is really good for you.

Charlie’s blog and the CRI blog don’t get nearly enough attention.

On the CRI blog, the mysterious jasonpattersonde wonders why the state is ordering certain products for the prisons (lotion, razors, toothpaste) as brand name with no substitutes.

So now we know what Charlie will be wondering later this day.

Anyway, the reason is that skin care and dental care are actually huge potential costs that can be prevented with proper care. Skin care especially needs good lotions and good razors. Because, especially in a prison environment, a minor scratch or rash can turn into an expensive infection, which will spread easily, especially when you have immuno-compromised people living in close quarters.

Ask any nurse about the importance of having the right products for skin care and dental care.

The extra cost of having the right stuff is cheap, compared with the cost of fixing the downstream costs of neglect.

Now if it turns out this stuff is getting sourced from a crony, that’s a different story. But we haven’t heard that yet.

anyone notice that a CRI twitter user is following their twitter account? I discovered this today, and blocked them.

It is Dave Burris. He is mostly harmless.

In an effort to create a silly talking point — and one that isn’t about saving money, but just about stoking resentments. Again. Because buying brand name stuff for a Prison has to be really wrong. And this is just petty. There are systemic issues with the Prison system that really need to be addressed and not one of them is solved by trying to create some BS about what kind of razors inmates get.

  5. The problem with prisons is who we lock up. When you spend as much on corrections as you do on higher education something is wrong.

Watch the Johnny Cash Movie and look at San Quentin/Folsom, the audience was largely white and not terribly young. Back then the recidivism rate was less than 25%. Now prison population is much younger, more black and very likely to repeat.

The issue is drugs. If you are a user you need treatment, if you are a dealer then you deserve life without parole. I am not a death penalty supporter but I would consider it.

    And apparently, store-brand toothpaste.

Not only do Mike and I agree on this, we apparently both listened to the same NPR report yesterday.
