Monday Open Thread

I have a definite case of the Mondays. I had to waste an hour this morning going back home after I got to work because I left my computer at home. Aaaarghhh! I hope your Monday is going better than mine is so far.

Anyway, let’s discuss whatever’s on your mind.

This is interesting: “7 Popular ‘Chick Flicks’ That Secretly Hate Women.” I’ll have to admit to hating most so-called chick flicks. They seem to be part of the societal pressure on women that men and relationships (and weddings!!!) are the most important things in a woman’s life. The article is really too long to excerpt but here’s the list of movies:
1. Pretty Woman
2. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
3. The Women
4. Memoirs of a Geisha
5. Because I Said So
6. Twilight
7. What Women Want

Of these, I’ve only seen #1 and #4. I definitely hated #4. I think everyone liked Pretty Woman but the criticism of the movie is valid. The others seem to follow the stereotypes I hate: women always longing for a man.

Joe Klein reports:

My favorite provision requires that all members of Congress give up their federally-funded health care benefits and join the health care exchanges that will be set up by this bill. This is brilliant politics, addressing the tide of populist anger and fears of incipient socialism. But it also makes an important substantive point. The future of health care reform in this country will depend on how effectively the exchanges–health insurance super-stores–are working. If members of Congress have to participate in this system, you can bet they’ll insist on a array of choices, similar to the system they currently use, the Federal Employees Health Benefits Plan.

I hope this is true. It will keep the exchanges from being crappified by the Senate like the public option will. I would like to propose an amendment that any lawmaker who talks negatively about “government-run health care” will never receive VA benefits or Medicare.

Here’s what’s on my mind. Things have been a bit more difficult for me since about August when I had some health issues crop up. Through a dogged pursuit to discover what the problem was I found the REAL problem. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Since then, I’ve had surgery and various other procedures and am now undergoing chemotherapy. My first treatment was last Friday. I have 17 more treatments spaced one week apart as long as the white cells and platelets hold out. Otherwise, I will extend into the spring with treatments. So, when I was eating a breakfast of scrambled eggs this morning, I was only a little out of sorts when my crown fell out. That was on top of a chipped tooth last week after a surgical procedure. But, these are now small things in my life. The big thing is the cancer, the loss of income, the cost of medical insurance and uncovered medical expenses.

So, is it Mondays that SUCK or is it something even bigger than that?

Mondays SUCK and I’m so sorry that your Monday seems to be particularly guilty of conspiracy against you, Anon This Time.

Of the 7 Popular Chick Flicks That Secretly Hate Women, I’ve seen #1 and #4. Both were very bad movies, with #1 being somewhat redeemed by the opportunity to watch the ever gorgeous Richard Gere. Won’t see #3 because it is a remake of a smart and funny (and dated) movie that doesn’t hate women.

  4. liberalgeek says:

I have only seen 1 and 7. They are both chick flicks, so I have no opinion of them.

  5. Another Mike says:

Only saw #1, and that was with my future wife. Once married, I saw no reason to ever watch a chick flick again. She doesn’t like mob movies, so we’re even.

  6. Brooke says:

Never seen any of them, never planning to. I’m really a guy named Earl, from Detroit.

  7. Suzanne says:

I saw the first and the fourth movie (Pretty Woman and Memoirs of a Geisha). Memoirs of a Geisha I actually watched in college in Cultural Anthropology class.

Cassandra – Americna Gigolo would ahve been better to watch for Richard Gere – at least you got to see him naked for a split second 😉

I only watched Pretty Woman so I can drool over Sandra Bullock (hey, I was younger at the time)

As for what’s on my mind today? That I really need to find a good home for the two cats that adopted us, because I can only afford the four that we already have!

Anon – that really sucks – Monday or not. Please keep us up to date how you are doing. I hope you have a lot of shoulders to lean on to and hands to hold while you are going through this!
    ((hugs))

ACORN, the gift that keeps on giving:

ACORN dumps documents; Breitbart has them and will release

    The American Thinker ^ | November 23, 2009 | Clarice Feldman
Following the release by Breitbart’s Big Government website of a video showing employees at ACORN’s San Diego County office offering to assist in the transportation and exploitation of underage prostitutes from abroad, the Attorney General of California announced an investigation into ACORN’s operations. Nights before the visit, ACORN dumped thousands of documents in a dumpster. Breitbart obtained them, says they are shocking evidence of ACORN’s illegality and promises to release them bit by bit over time: Documents shared with BigGovernment.com include information exposing not only the inner workings of ACORN in California, but also personal, sensitive information belonging to employees,…

Just back from a week in Washington DC. Haven’t been there since just before the election. Some concise observations:

-I love the Metro, but it’s beginning showing its age.
-Significantly more panhandlers, and they were notably more aggressive.
-Security at the Smithsonian is TIGHT.
-Saw something new in some areas; Uniformed people who approach you and offer maps, directions, or other assistance. I believe they were called SAM (Safety an Maintenance?). It was nice, and they were plentiful and polite. Beats the heck out of the ACORN workers on every corner trying to register you to vote.
-Noticeably more hookers in Chinatown after dark.

  10. More feminist dribble, there is nothing wrong with enjoying stories about relationships. There is also something nearly universal about the love between men and women. That is why I tend to like the so called chick flicks. I think the liberal characterization is sexist and I reject it. I prefer relational dramas and romantic comedies.

The left wing media has tried to steer men to denying their feelings, passions, and deeper soul. They try to make us forget our spritual self in an effort to make women superior. I reject it. I believe men and women are equal and complimentary. I reject the exclusion of men from families, faith, and romantic movies.

What Women Want was a fine movie. The author was not capable of understanding it. I also liked Hitch.

  11. The left wing media has tried to steer men to denying their feelings, passions, and deeper soul.

Oh dear. That’s the Patriarchy, it’s what feminists complain about all the time.

Who said there was something wrong with enjoying stories about relationships? I like stories about relationships, romantic or otherwise. What I don’t like are stories that reinforce negative stereotypes about women and relationships – mainly that men are the focus of a woman’s entire life and the possibility of love and marriage make sensible women crazy.

I can’t really comment on “What Women Want.” All I can point you to is the review and why the author of the piece thought it secretly hated women. In the review it stated that the women were all obsessed with Mel Gibson. I’ll have to say that does not accurately reflect the thoughts of most women. Plus, Gibson is a misogynist pig.

  12. Suzanne says:

wow, what a brainfart yesterday – i can’t beleive I wrote Sandra Bullock instead of Julia Roberts….

  13. liberalgeek says:

It’s OK, Suzanne, they are both drool-worthy.
