Can you say Autism?
Yes, we have that nice little widget over there that is getting a little attention these days. I personally thank everyone who has donated and wish everyone luck on the upcoming walk. The next little post has very little to do with Autism, but if you know anything about Autism, then you also know very little is known about what “causes” it. So read the below article and you tell me if things like this should be left to chance.
Isn’t there something wrong with our Country when China bans a chemical found in baby bottles and the liners of baby formula before we do? Canada is about too as well.
Is this, you conservatives out there, your idea of Free Market Capitalism? After a few million kids contract cancers, maybe become autistic and grow three legs from this stuff oozing out of their baby bottles another company will stop using the supposedly benign substance and the other companies will be forced to not use BPA or go out of business. Supply and Demand. Free market. woohooo.
Awesome! Who needs government regulation when the market will regulate itself?
Last month, in response to questions from lawmakers, the FDA said it had disregarded hundreds of government and academic studies about the cancer risks of BPA and used just two studies funded by the chemical industry to determine that the chemical is safe.
and It’s perfectly harmless…see:
Used in the production of plastic since the 1950s, BPA may be linked in laboratory animals to breast cancer, prostate cancer, early puberty in females and behavioral changes, according to the study released yesterday. It called for more research into the chemical’s health effects
Look, see, I told you! the system works!
The worries have been a boon for a two-year-old company, Born Free, that manufactures BPA-free baby bottles and sippy cups. The company can’t turn out bottles fast enough, and demand intensifies with new scientific studies.
“Every time there is a publication, after a few days, we’re out of stock,” said Gil Lemel, the company’s chief executive. “Every time we think we are better prepared, it never is enough. We make 80,000 bottles a day, and we have no inventory.”

The odds of a child being diagnosed with autism are now 1 in 150.
Glass or steel for food containers. It’s easier to clean anyway – that plastic crap never really gets clean.
I heard if Saran Wrap were invented today it wouldn’t be approved due to the chemicals.
My son was the 4th child to enter the Delaware Autistic Program. Prior to the creation (by parents who were so desperate for services, we researched the entire country to come up with the model that is now the Del. Autistic Program). Dr. Charles Skinner should be honored and credited with the majority of the work that brought this program into being. Prior to the program, our children were forced into the horrific state insitutions, or placed in church basements tied to chairs and other horrors. Many of the parents who formed organizations to deal with the legislature, have endured the most negative attacks because of their insistence that appropriate, effective programs be developed. There were only programs for mentally retarded. Autism is not mental retardation. People with autism need a higher structure and different treatment modality. I can only say that Dr. Skinner way back in the 70’s was so smart to put the Del. Autistic Program in the Del. Code, otherwise the dover dimwits would be trying to dismantle it, as they are in other service areas.
These children need all the help they can get, and their parents need help with respite care…their are many scientists who believe the 3 shots given our children as babies were the cause of it. Others believe its environmental, and others believe it genetic. I disagree with the genetic rap, since I have been involved with the issue for over 40 years, and have met families across the country, who have no other children or family members who had autism. Many of us believe its the chemicals which are even more rampant today…causing the leap in autism rates. When my son was born it was l in 150,000….now its 1 in 150! The problem is the state is very aware of how much education costs for these children and many are once again not being properly diagnosed!
I have a baby on the way, and I don’t know how to say it without sounding selfish, but I am scared to death she will be autistic. that child is going to have a ton of issues to deal with…
ahhh who cares I guess..
she will be delawares hottest autistic!
Donviti: please don’t worry. I am sure your baby will be just fine. All my other children were terrified while pregnant.. and I have a daughter who is pregnant right now. All 5 of my grandchildren are beautiful and very bright. Just make sure when you go to the Doctors for the baby shots…you INSIST the 3 shots be given individually. Its a very scary, and frightening experience…the worst of it all is getting the proper testing to be sure, and dealing with the State Board of Ed, and DHSS, they will make drive you crazy as they wheel and deal and try to avoid getting the proper care. My son was a guinea pig in the first program, and actually was so severe even those wonderful people at the Del. Autistic Program, could not deal with him, he spent about 10 years out of state. Its a tragedy for the child, and a nightmare for the parents. These parents need all the support and love we can give them. Dealing with my son, made me deal with politics, which I had avoided up until I had to fight for services. I found my voice, and it just got louder over time. You and your wife will be fine….anyway you have all of us to support you no matter what, right!
