Pre-Debate Thread
Tonight at 7:30 PM Chris Coons and Christine O’Donnell will participate in a debate sponsored by CNN and the University of Delaware. It will be broadcast on CNN and CSPAN and also webcast by UD. I assume it will also be audiostreamed by WHYY and WDEL.
This debate is really important for Christine O’Donnell’s campaign. Polls in the last few weeks show Chris Coons leading her by 15-19%. This may be her last chance to get voters to change their minds about her. (Although polls show few undecideds and leaners).
So what do you expect to see tonight? Will Christine O’Donnell offer something new? What about Chris Coons?
I thought it might be fun to put together a drinking game for the debate, since I’m going to be sitting at home and watching the debate. Put some suggestions on when to take a drink (that won’t make us have a black-out).
My suggestions:
If O’Donnell is asked about being a witch – drink
If Chris Coons has to deny he’s a “Bearded Marxist” – drink
If an audience member gets thrown out for clapping/heckling – 2 drinks
If Chris Coons says he’s “independent” – drink
If Christine O’Donnell claims to be “you” – drink
More suggestions?

Congrats Christine O’Donnell – Top 3!
Everytime O’Donnell claims to have been “smeared” drink.
I’m impressed by the set on Scott though. Isn’t Florida’s largest demographic on medicare? If those seniors vote for a guy that defrauded their healthcare then Ms.O’Donnell should head there after getting her clock cleaned here.
Debate: If COD brings her skydaddy into it – drink
Does DL do live chat rooms any more?
Let me check with our resident Tech-God, A1. Perhaps we’ll get one up tonight!
COD mentions ‘my lesbian sister’–drink
COD mentions ‘tax and spend liberal’–drink
COD mentions ‘real Delawareans’ or ‘real Delaware voters’–drink
COD mentions ‘there you go again’–drink
2nd floor of Newark’s Timothy’s is having a debate watching party–come join us (and sign up to volunteer)!
Thanks, pandora – it would be fun! (I am not sure that I could join, but maybe!)
COD says that regulations are hurting business drink mercury.
I spoke with our Tech-God – LiberalGeek for those not in the know! 🙂 – and he said he’d set it up for tonight. A post will go up with a link once the liveblog is activated.
Some basic rules for liveblogging:
1. Be prepared. Translation: Have your drink of choice ready!
Um… that’s pretty much it.
COD says that regulations are hurting business–eat some Gulf shrimp, sign yourself up for a sheriff sale of your home, and store some nuclear waate in your basement
COD asks ‘where is your stimulus’–tell her that your kid’s teacher is in the classroom because of the stimulus, and police are on the street, firefighters/EMTs are on the job, libraries are open for business
COD complains about Coons raising real estate taxes–note that this is only for those who own a home, not those who sell their house to their boyfriend just before the sheriff comes
“Things I may have said 20 years ago” – eat eye of newt and/or tongue of toad
“I’m you” – finish the bottle.
I predict LOTS of talk about Liberty.
Backroom deals calls for a drink doesn’t it?
Good one Venus. Sorry pandora, we can’t use Liberty, that will be used too much and we’ll pass out before the debate is over. Also, “free market solutions” and “private enterprise” could possibly cause an alcoholic coma.
Just in time for the debate, a new poll puts Chris Coons up by 21%.
When she claims she didn’t go to Yale – drink.
When she claims she’s had “money problems” – drink.
When she claims she beat Joe Biden – drink.
When she says she’ll repeal and replace “Obamacare” – drink.
When she turns Coons into a newt – drink.
UI – I’m one of those 54% (if these are the results from the poll taken on Monday night).
I’m confused—backroom deals calls for a toast doesn’t it?
MJ, me too. Did you opt to answer questions after? I am.
Well, I guess, for coma reasons, we can’t drink when Chris Coons says, ‘specifics’ or ‘policy, but I insist on keeping the drink for “job creation.”
And no Christine drinking game is official unless we hoist one for “so long ago” and ‘misrepresented.”
I love the banter on the NJ that these polls don’t include Kent and Sussex, and she was adored at Apple Scrapple, blah blah blah. 10 bucks COD skips Return Day after her big loss though.
Anon, she’ll miss Return Day for medical reasons. You’d be incapacitated too if a house fell on you and you lost your ruby slippers.
Joe C – yes, taking the poll tonight. And it did include Sussex (they called me, didn’t they?).
Dr. Strangevote gets the prize for wittiest comment today.
If you want to watch with a like-minded crowd, come to Timothy’s in Newark (off Paper Mill Road). We will be upstairs.
There will also be a debate-watch get-together at the Sussex Democratic Consolidated HQ on Route 1 in Lewes (just north of 5 Points across from St. Jude’s).
Unfortunately, what could be the best part of the debate — questions from the students — will not be broadcast live by CNN. They will be shown on the replay at 11 and should be streamed live.
“There you go again.” — one drink
I heard on NPR today that Channel 12 is broadcasting the whole debate.
There will be a debate-watch & get together at the Sussex Correctional Institution tonight as well. After those fellows debate about watching Lady O’Donnell, they will get together.
Cyc, Having been a guest of that particular B&B I can assure that the 1 19 set per 75 guys will not be used on the debate for one simple reason. 2 Channels 16 & 47. If it ain’t there it ain’t on:)
I’m betting COD says “Marxist” at least three times.
Normally a candidate would leave that to their minions in the whispering campaign, but I’m thinking Christine says it in person.
I have been suitably smacked red ass. Thank you jpc. I only sheltered at Cecil County Correctional for a short time. I don’t remember televisions but there was all the Louis Lamour and Klan recruitments I could read. And there were no get togethers. I’d like to add that before someone SLIPS it in.
Another new poll CNN/Time shows Coons up by 19% over O’Donnell, 57% to 38%.
Of course she will play the marxist card, and is so ridiculous it will show how desperate she is.
anon, when I read your first post inre your bet, I thought “No way! She’d never go that low nationally!” Now in the clear light of a burger and a beer, you are right, at least once, just to raise her TP creds.
I will be watching the debate – wine glass, full of wine in my hand.
I won’t be sipping cabernet – I don’t like it – -but I will play along…..
I predict a 10 point spread – Conns is gonna smoke her
Aoine, you really should go with the pinot gris.
And smoke her he will, which leaves me concerned about carbon emissions.
Hmmm…let’s take inventory here. I’ve got some cold Prosecco, a nice Malbec, some Yuengling that is almost cold, and a good 12 year old Irish whiskey.
The bubbly might project overconfidence. There’s three weeks to go, after all. And I really should save the Malbec to go with a nice steak this weekend.
So for the debate I think I’ll go with the beer, and a finger or two of whiskey for a nightcap.
Oh hell, I’ll be into the whiskey after the first “Marxist” comment.
I have got to hang avec toi
After all that drinkin’ I would dearly love to see a transcript to go back over each question. Try like the devil to find an actual answer from CoD. Is such a thing ever available? Will it be posted somewhere,do you think?
Thanks for that live chat. It was well, lively.
I think what my Aunt said about this debate was most appropriate: “If there was no difference between the two on the issues, Coons would without a doubt have my vote.”
I think Coons came off as very professional and capable. I do think there were more than a few times when he acted inappropriately condescending towards O’Donnell, which frankly, made me sympathize with her. If we’re to be honest, we’d admit that 99% of us are not as polished as Coons, and would have our asses handed to us in a debate, whether the facts were on our side or not. I think it’s rather unbecoming of a senatorial candidate to essentially rub that fact in his opponents’ nose. Coons acted like an arrogant douche at times, in other words.
I find it sad that liberals have become so overcome with hatred that they cannot see arrogance and fascistic behavior simply because it’s their party’s candidate that is exhibiting it.
It saddens me to no end to see the party that should be the champions of the weak exalt in their domination, solely because of differing opinions. I thought liberals were more sophisticated than the rah rah mentality of rooting for regional sports teams.
And how about the bullshit questions in the debate? Nothing about Israel/Palestine? Nothing about the fairness doctrine, or the fact that essentially 5 media companies control the debate in the United States? Single payer healthcare? Torture? How about the fact that we’ve used the deaths of 3,000 citizens on 9/11 to justify the occupation of 2 sovereign (lol) nations, and the deaths of nearly 100,000 innocents (or, by some estimates, 1,000,000). But yeah, be happy that your team has won…
Clearly, whether gays can serve openly in an army that participates in such wanton destruction is a more important CULTURAL value than our collective dismissal of foreign civilian death. Brown skinned and weird, Arab civilian death at that. Thank God we’ve got our brave drones to fight against such overwhelming forces, eh?
