It’s Official – Tom Kovach Is GOP NCCo Council President Nominee

Filed in Delaware by on November 17, 2010

It’s official – the New Castle County GOP has announced its candidate for NCCo Council President is former state Rep. Tom Kovach. Kovach was defeated in November by new state Rep. Debra Heffernan. What do you think of his chances against Bill Dunn or Tim Sheldon? He’s a well-regarded moderate, but will that inspire the NCCo GOP to vote?

I don’t like to get in to personalities but good man and bad man are not the problem, the process is. I was in the room last week when Kovach and Protack interviewed and here it is 2 weeks after the election and we still are looking. Both of these guys deserve better.

I am not a power broker, I was a participant that’s it. The difference was pretty clear, Protack was the more forceful and aggressive. Kovach was more a talker and a participant. Different styles. I think County Council needs a bull dog but that’s just me. Maybe a good referee is okay also.

Protack seemed to have a deeper grasp of the county and much larger name ID but Kovach flashed the Castle/Rollins name as his supporters. Kovach was conversational and answered questions. Protack was always driving towards what it would take to win and I did not know he had such a liking for organized labor, surprising for a Republican.

Both took about 45 minutes but then I thought we might be able to vote but we were there at the HQ till almost 11 pm and it was pretty clear the vote would not happen. Just me but I think the outcome was not a sure thing so we did not vote.

I respond because we look at the convention but the fact is we have a great chance here and I think we have blown it. Either guy was ok with me with a very slight edge to Mike only because of name ID. After I saw that Tea Party Poll the results were pretty clear. The Tea Party is a bit scary at times but they are the only people excited in the GOP.

I read these blogs now and then but generally they are pretty sad and the personal attacks are endless and childish. People say things without any merit or confirmation. I add these comments because after the disastrous 2010 season we needed to hit the cover off the ball and it seems we are trying to bunt or hit a sacrifice fly.

I agree the convention needs work but right now I am disappointed with the long delay. To be honest if either guy gets it he better win or their careers are over election wise and for that matter if we botch it badly so is Fleming’s.

I am kind of new at these organizational matters but the only reason to have a meeting is to have an agenda and a decision the agreed to action plan. We are floundering and I have many other things to do if we do not get things moving. Now I hear we might have to meet for a third guy.

Maybe the Democratic Party is not so smart we seem to miss opportunities over and over.

I certainly hope so. As I said in the Heffernan/Kovach race in November–that district had 2 great choices, and I’m so glad to see Kovach pursue service elsewhere. Good on him for not curling up in a ball. Go Tom Go!!!

  3. anon says:

Choosing Protack for the special election would be like throwing a Hail Mary pass during the first inning of Wimbledon. (i.e. batshit crazy and foolish stupidity rolled into a great big ball of living in a fantasy world with a pinch of what the fuck).

  4. ‘I was There ‘, Fleming and Kovach just sent the official presser so there will be no third meeting. I thought that Mike Protack was an impressive NCC Council primary candidate because of his grasp of the county business. Kovach is an attorney who knows about the environmental end of things. I don’t know how much of a chance he has against the NCC DEM machiner.

  5. Publius says:

The email is not even a few hours old, but already the anonymous attacks on someone who defeated Protack for something begin. And it’s the first response to this post. Why am I not surprised?

    bravo, anon

  7. donviti says:

There really is no end to a politicians career

  8. anon says:

‘I was There’ is Protack. That night ended around 9:45pm and there was a discussion and informal vote after both candidates left. We went around the room and everyone gave their opinion. There was no support for Protack. Sorry Mike, you’re a nice guy but everyone felt Tom was the stronger candidate.

If you had been there you should remember that Kovach said he hadn’t talked to Castle yet.

  9. cassandra_m says:

For anon — there is ALOT of Protack name ID that isn’t exactly positive….

  10. anon says:

cass-did I fail to express that sufficiently? My apologies 🙂

  11. Geezer says:

IWT sounds just like Protack, for what that’s worth.

Kovach has to hope for 1) typical low special-election turnout and 2) people will go for the idea of putting a Republican in the office as some sort of check on a Democrat-controlled council. Unfortunately for him, that argument works better if he’s running for county exec; council president is just an at-large member.

  12. cassandra_m says:

It’s All Good, anon. Since Protack is here misreporting events, there is no danger of ever *over* repeating the obvious…..

  13. While I like Kovach, when we talk about his ‘know(ing) about the environmental end of things’, it is as a corporate lawyer for DuPont. We’re not talking Greenpeace here.

As long as Sheldon can convince people that he’s not Paul’s henchman, he’ll likely win. He’s actually a surer thing than Dunn, whose positions I generally like. Labor can be vindictive like that.

  14. No Knee pads says:

The tired, long in the tooth GOP of Delaware nominates a lawyer for public office again. When will they learn that Americans are sick and tired of lawyers as public officials. They are the ones the screw up our government in the 1st place. Stop it please. Get a fully fuctioning human brain and get rid of all your Greenville stooges and leave politics to the people that care about honest government.

  15. Labor will not allow Kovach over Dunn no matter how peeved they may be if their ‘man’ doesn’t take the nomination.

  16. JustTheFacts says:

Ho-hum, Kovach loses. End of story. He’s their new Bill Lee.

  17. Anvil says:

“Ho-hum, Kovach loses. End of story. He’s their new Bill Lee.” Great analogy. They both beat Protack.

  18. Belinsky says:

As long as Sheldon can convince people that he’s not Paul’s henchman, he’ll likely win.

Not sure about that, ES. Labor shoved Susan Holmes onto the ballot in ’88 and she got crushed by Phil Cloutier. Same dynamic if Sheldon gets nomination. GOP Turnout in Greenville, Hockessin, etc., will be on the order of 80 percent, given the Stoltz land-grab. Dunn is the only Democrat who can win.
