Monday Open Thread

Welcome to your Monday open thread. I’m back, kittens! Did you miss me? I know, you didn’t even notice I was gone.

A Hasidic newspaper photoshopped Hillary Clinton and another woman out of the situation room picture taken during the OBL operation. I guess it’s too subversive to see women making important national security decisions.

This is just a really cool science story. A NASA probe has proven some previously untested effects from Einstein’s theories.

Launched in 2004, the Gravity Probe B mission used four ultraprecise gyroscopes—devices used to measure orientation—housed in a satellite to measure two aspects of Einstein’s theory about gravity.

The first is the geodetic effect, which is the warping of space and time—or spacetime—around a gravitational body, such as a planet.

One common way to visualize the geodetic effect is to think of Earth as a bowling ball and spacetime as a trampoline. Earth’s gravity warps spacetime the same way a bowling ball weighs down the middle of a trampoline.

The second effect of gravity tested by Gravity Probe B is frame dragging, which is the amount that a spinning object pulls the fabric of spacetime along with it.

Just how big is the geodetic effect? It’s really, really small, that’s why Einstein thought it was probably untestable.

Sifting through the data, the team found evidence of an angular change in the gyroscopes’ orientation of about 6,600 milliarcseconds over the course of a year.

A milliarcsecond, Everitt explained, “is the width of a human hair seen at the distance of 10 miles [16 kilometers]. It really is a rather small angle, and this is the accuracy which Gravity Probe B had to achieve.”

Amazing science.

Rick Jensen just said that “Delaware Liberal is frothing at the mouth that Markell is trying to bring jobs to Delaware.”

He said he’d get right back to this topic. I’m listening…

How the NYT Ignored Its Own Social Media Role in the Breaking of the bin Laden story.

Interesting the Paper of Record can’t quite assimilate its own social media effort. Also interesting that they don’t get that they live in a world where the news happens more on a continuum now — that does not pay attention to when the reporter is done reporting. And that their own reporters get it, but not their editors.

Props to you Pandora for listening to Jensen.

  4. pandora says:

He still hasn’t mentioned what he’s led with – us! You’d think if this was an important enough to lead with he would have mentioned it 50 minutes into the show. Just sayin’

  5. John Kowalko says:

Pandora save your mind for more intelligent debates and put on some music instead. Nothing can describe a true frothing at the mouth better than a living example of frothing at the truth that Rick Jensen brings to any debate. The high-strung, intense rhetoric (such as occurred on this site) in discussing and debating true circumstances that call for a vigorous debate and different points of view is not rabid behavior. It is not spewing vitriol to be intelligently vested in a point of view and challenging others to “do something about it”. It is not vitriolic behavior to be disappointed in expectations you had for someone and to vigorously express that feeling of being “let down”.

However in Jensen’s case it often can be symbolic frothing at the mouth to pretend to maintain a demeanor and decorum in your discourse while consistently and persistently eschewing the facts and the truth while trying to provoke an animus amongst people intelligent enough to consider and converse about different “valid” points of view.

Getting on topic or right back to a topic has never been one of Rick’s strong points and often the topic has undergone a metamorphosis that makes it indistinguishable from fantasy or pure fabrication.

Over an hour in and still no mention of his lead story.

John, I have Miles Davis playing, and Jensen is a ne’er do well. The GOP is full of them. And he would have never led with this story if he actually read the blog.

  7. pandora says:

Going on two hours in, and… nada. But he spent a lot of time on the Osama pinata. Not. Kidding.

    Now he’s talking about hats.

  8. jpconnorjr says:

I want one of those! 4′ high filed with pork skins….Nom!

  9. Jason330 says:

Pandora’s account of the Jensen show is like found poetry.

  10. pandora says:

    Still nothing.

Altho… Rick just asked a guy if he has ever thought of framing tee shirts (he’s moved off of hats) and hanging them on his wall. The guy said, no. So Rick said… What? You don’t have any art on your wall?

    OMG, I’m dying here.

  11. jpconnorjr says:

Rick J. just teased DL one more time:)

  12. Joanne Christian says:

This week this family budget spent more on gas than groceries. Something has to be done w/ this energy situation, and South Dakota is looking real viable about now.

  13. pandora says:

You could move to my neighborhood, Joanne. I fill up every 3 weeks. I love city living! 🙂

  14. jpconnorjr says:

Jensen is giving Credit to Bush tax cuts!!!!!! OMG! Thats it Rick thats it…..

  15. pandora says:

I missed the last 20 minutes due to phone call. Did he finally discuss DL and our frothing at the mouth? Or was it more tee shirt art? I swear, that kills me! Bet he has the velvet painting of dogs playing poker!

  16. pandora says:

Here we go… Rick has Evan Q. on as an economist. I kid you not. This is awesome.

  17. jpconnorjr says:

Jensen is in no danger of being fair, balanced or right. on a personal level he’s a nice guy though:)

  18. socialistic ben says:

oy, the Hasids. aka the Jewish Taliban.

you should look into the ones in Israel who live off the state, dont serve in the military (compulsory service for everyone else) then become politicians who turn out to be the biggest war hawks. total shandas.

  19. John Kowalko says:

With all due respect, I find it difficult to label someone as a nice guy who is so willing to continuously poison the atmosphere of truth with exaggerations, unsubstantiated innuendo, and flat out lies to the extent that he promulgates and encourages a climate of resentment and unfairness to those in need. Self-serving ignorance is not self deprecating humor and “nice guys” do not punish the innocent unfortunates because they have a radio show, even one with a significantly small and ever dwindling audience.

  20. pandora says:

One thing I noticed about Jensen’s show… not many callers. Maybe three or four in three hours. That can’t be good.

  21. cassandra_m says:

Rick has Evan Q. on as an economist.

I wrap up my work for the afternoon and find I’ve missed the vaudville show. Holy Moly! Bet that was a laugh a minute…..

  22. jpconnorjr says:

Point taken. But away from the mic I have seen him do some genuinely nice things. With my own track record I try to find good in everybody

  23. Aoine says:

Evan Q – you mean the guy that has outstanding civil judgements against him

they guy that cannot pay his rent nor bills – really???

OMG – that’s like making a Quaker a National Seccurity Advisor

    Too funny!!

  24. cassandra m says:

Hey P, I forgot to thank you for suffering through Jensen’s show for us. If you are currently in self-medicating mode to recover, I can run over a bottle of Bitch Bubbly if you need it… 😉

  25. John Kowalko says:

    jpconnorjr,
You are correct that he does engage in a lot of charitable ventures, both on and off the air, and I respect that as a good quality. Maybe my frustration is with the slow pace of society’s moral conscience insinuating itself into the dialogue of government. I hate to see a bully pulpit not fully utilized. Guess I’ll have to get my own radio show.
    John

  26. jpconnorjr says:

Thanks John, I have found in thses past 4 years of my travails that many folks with whom I disagree politicaly have been there for me personally. Rick is one of those individuals. He took my calls at my darkest hours. More recently he has helped publicize our Homeless newspaper “One Step Away” both on the air and at his Rotary club. He gave me airtime to discuss the economic benefits of effective prisoner re-entry. I am happy to defend his “right to be wrong” on the issues. Frankly I woud rather have an adversary who is straight up than a “Friend” on whom I can not count.
    Cheers, Joe

Rose and a Prayer on Al’s show. tomorrow a vote will be taken on parental notification. This is just another attack on women and their right to choose! These people actually believe they are helping young girls. But, the woman said on the air, “if the young girl wants an abortion and her parents dont, the young girl can go to a Judge” and get a judicial waiver. In the next breath she claimed NO judge has ever refused. So why put these young women through this step, if the Judge is going to rule with the girl. This makes no sense at all…just another and continuing attack on women and Roe vs. Wade. Its a fact that more catholics have abortion than any other group. A study proves it. Google: Center for reason.

  29. anon says:

JOhn Kowalko! your words are well taken and truthful. We can count on Jenson to find some right wing think tank to prove his insanity. He hates single payer health care, was in the tank for these illegal wars, torture et al. Just another republican talking head who has no concience…and will lie…we have caught him in them.

  30. No Hillary????????????

“Brooklyn, NY – Much has been written about a controversial altered photograph of the White House situation room published by Der Tzeitung, a Chareidi newspaper, based out of Brooklyn. The photo, which was taken live as senior officials were watching the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, showed neither Secretary of State Hillary Clinton nor Director of Counterterrorism Audrey Tomason, both of whom were present but were removed from the photo in keeping with Chareidi standards of modesty.

    Advertisement:
News of this photo spread quickly, with major news services worldwide lambasting Der Tzeitung for removing the two women from the photo, something that was deemed both an insult to Clinton, Tomason and women worldwide, in addition to violating specific White House instructions that the photo not be altered in any way.

Der Tzeitung released the following statement today in response to the furor that has erupted regarding the altered photo:

The White House released a picture showing the President following “live” the events in the apprehension of Osama Bin Laden, last week Sunday. Also present in the Situation Room were various high-ranking government and military officials. Our photo editor realized the significance of this historic moment, and published the picture, but in his haste he did not read the “fine print” that accompanied the picture, forbidding any changes. We should not have published the altered picture, and we have conveyed our regrets and apologies to the White House and to the State Department.

The allegations that religious Jews denigrate women or do not respect women in public office, is a malicious slander and libel. The current Secretary of State, the Honorable Hillary R. Clinton, was a Senator representing New York State with great distinction 8 years. She won overwhelming majorities in the Orthodox Jewish communities in her initial campaign in ‘00, and when she was re-elected in ‘06, because the religious community appreciated her unique capabilities and compassion to all communities. The Jewish religion does not allow for discrimination based on gender, race, etc.

We respect all government officials. We even have special prayers for the welfare of our Government and the government leaders, and there is no mention of gender in such prayers.”
