“Democrats for Kovach” Building Momentum

Filed in National by on November 20, 2011

I’ll admit that it has been a slow start for “Democrats for Kovach.” In part because the spelling of Kovachs’ name was an unfathomable mystery for so many, and in part because people don’t fully understand the goals of the “Democrats for Kovach” movement. Let me clear that confusion up with the first draft of the “Democrats for Kovach” manifesto. This is an open source manifesto, so please take part in honing the “Democrats for Kovach” manifesto in the Comments section.

Democrats for Kovach Manifesto

1) “Democrats for Kovach” do not want to elect Tim Kovach or any other Republican to public office. Kovach is a wingnut cyrpto-teabag sympathizer and worst of all, a Republican. Recent history is replete with horror stories of the downstream catastrophes that attend electing Republicans. Republican “trickle down” economics which depend on cutting taxes on our wealthiest citizens and corporations in the hope that the money will be used to “create jobs” has created the dire economic situation that we are in today. Calls to continue Republican economics through “austerity” are nothing more than advocating for a middle class in continuous decline and MORE economic failure.

2) “Democrats for Kovach” do not want to elect Democrats to office who promote a destructive Republican agenda under the ruse of being “bipartisan” (I’m looking at you John Carney). Delaware is a blue state and deserves to be represented in Congress by a Democrat who can be counted on to uphold basic Democratic Party principles by being vocally in favor of a social safety net, and a strong economy built on progressive taxation. It is our firm belief that any incumbent Demcorat running as an unapologetic Democrat can easily win re-election in Delaware given built in registration advantages and the continuing popularity of Democratic policies among Delaware voters.

3) Knowing that TIM KOVACH has no chance in hell of beating John Carney, “Democrats for Kovach” will use the upcoming election for the House of representatives, to continually remind the candidates that Delaware is a Democratic state which deserves democratic representation in Congress.

That’s the basics. Nobody is primarying Carney, so unless he changes his tune, the only reasonable course of action is to thrown away a protest vote on the pitiful candidacy of Tom Kovach.

  1. Geezer says:

    4) Democrats for Kovach won’t actually vote for Kovach.

  2. jason330 says:

I think we have to hold our cards a little closer to our vest than that.

  3. Geezer says:

    Oops. Too much transparency?

  4. puck says:

The goal is for Carney to win by one vote.

Failing that, Kovach winning by one vote will also be acceptable. You can’t play this game unless you are willing to roll the dice.

If Kovach wins, this committee will immediately dedicate itself to finding a real Democrat to defeat him in 2014. If Carney wins, this committee will dedicate itself to finding a Democratic primary candidate for 2014.

Either way, the practice of Delaware electing blue dogs by 60%+ margins has to end. We need better choices.

There will also need to be a concerted PR campaign to explain to the brain-dead media that the opposition to Carney is from the left, not from the right.

It has always been unthinkable to support a Republican to get rid of a bad Democrat – until Democrats like John Carney reduced the difference to a short hop.

Honorary chairman is Harry S. Truman:

I’ve seen it happen time after time. When the Democratic candidate allows himself to be put on the defensive and starts apologizing for the New Deal and the fair Deal, and says he really doesn’t believe in them, he is sure to lose. The people don’t want a phony Democrat. If it’s a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat, and I don’t want any phony Democratic candidates in this campaign.

  5. jason330 says:

Great choice for honorary chair. Give ’em Hell Harry vs. Give ’em a back rub Carney.

Geezer, I just wish I knew someone with an AM talk radio show that I could call on monday morning to talk up “Democrats for Kovach” ?

  6. puck says:

Just show up to Carney events with three friends holding large “Democrats for Kovach” signs and you will have all the media coverage you want.

  7. anon says:

What about Scott Whatshisface who ran last time on a platform of space rockets or something? Is he not running again?

  8. puck says:

Truman as chair is especially appropriate, since Harry was the very first person to sign up for Medicare, which Carney seems to be ready to throw under the bus.

  9. Jason330 says:

    Three friends. good one!

  10. puck says:

OK, maybe you can just bring some inflatable HOV lane dummies and move them around a little.

You make a strong point though. Perhaps the no-vote tactic should be back on the table. It may be more effective to appeal to Democrats’ apathy than to their activism.

  11. Jason330 says:

The only little bit of leverage we peons have left is in the voting booth. It is politics 101. Give me what I want or no vote. And believe me, what “Democrats for Kovach” want is not unreasonable.

  12. Jason330 says:

BTW did anyone see Senator Coons on Meet the Press? I wonder if Austerity is going to save us?

  13. anonone says:

I have met and had discussions with both Carney and Kovach. My personal impression was that Kovach was much friendlier and genuine and Carney is a chameleon in the same mold as Mike Castle.

  14. kavips says:

Yeah, but Carney went to Dartmouth. 🙂

  15. Jason330 says:

Who said this? “(we need to) extend tax cuts for all Americans while we work to determine a long-term policy for reducing our national debt.”

If you said that John Carney was responsible for that illogical Republican sounding gibberish, you’d be correct.

  16. puck says:

“We need to keep striking ourselves in the forehead with this hammer, while we continue to investigate the source of our terrible headaches.”

  17. anonone says:

    Carney 2012 = Mike Castle 2008

  18. Jason330 says:

It was from John Carney’s full GOP sounding Contract on the Economy, from his website.

My top priority in Congress will be creating jobs. Here are six concrete steps I would take to get Delaware back on the right track:

    1) Implement a temporary payroll tax holiday to encourage hiring …(ABSURD!)

    2) Extend the renewable energy tax credit to encourage growth in new industries …(Fine.)

    3) Ensure that qualified small businesses have access to credit by empowering community banks to access the capital needed to make loans …( Okay, I guess)

    4) Reauthorize the research and development tax credit to incentivize businesses to create 21st century jobs right here in Delaware …( More tax credits for DuPont!! Huzzah!)

    5) Reduce bureaucratic red-tape that discourages people from creating or expanding small businesses …(this is outright bullshit. Anybody who wants to start a business can start a business.)

    6) Extend tax cuts for all Americans while we work to determine a long-term policy for reducing our national debt. …(WTF? Right? This brings dishonor to anyone who ever attended Dartmouth. )

Too much government debt will be a drag on our economy in the long term. I will make it a top priority to get government spending under control and reduce the national deficit.

And he brings it home with something taken directly from Grover Norquist. AN AWESOME DEMOCRAT WE HAVE REPRESENTING US!!!! Congrats Delaware.

  19. puck says:

Any plan that sets out to “free up capital for hiring” is bullshit from the start.

All these small business benefits and tax credits will sound a lot better during an upswing. But they won’t create the upswing by themselves.

  20. Jason330 says:

In other Democrats for Kovach” news. The blog: http://democrats4kovach.wordpress.com/

…got its first comment today, so I would expect Carney to be revising all of the tax cuts malarkey out of his talking points fairly soon.

  21. puck says:

I can’t get enough of that Truman quote. You rarely see the entire thing verbatim. In fact, I love it so much here it is again. Give ’em hell, Harry! you purist, you!

  22. anonone says:

However much you like the quote, it is laughably incorrect. People elect phony Democrats over genuine Republicans all the time.

  23. Jason330 says:

In a competitive race, one in which incumbency or lopsided fund-raising is not an issue – Truman’s quote holds up very well.

  24. puck says:

A1 is right. When you come right down to it, I mostly like the part where Truman says “I don’t want any phony Democratic candidates in this campaign. “

  25. Jason330 says:

    No he isn’t.

  26. anonone says:

Do you mean like the Carney-Urquhart race where incumbency and lopsided fund-rasing weren’t issues and the phony dem beat the genuine republican? Or what about the Obama – McCain race?

By the way, Truman did not qualify his quote when he said it. And it still ain’t true when you try to.

  27. Jason330 says:

    Yes it is.

  28. sisyphus says:

You people just can’t stand prosperity. Delaware and in fact the Delaware democratic party will never elect a progressive to congress. How do you think Mike Castle got elected all those years. And if it weren’t for the perfect storm in the republican primary, Castle would have beaten Coons(hardly a Progessive} like a rented mule. Get over yourselves. If you really want to advance your values, run for the general assembly or support somebody running for office. With respect to Democrats For Kovach and all those attracted to it John Fowles in his novel The Magus has a wonderfully apprpriate quote “Cynacism masks the inability to cope”

  29. Jason330 says:

Yeah. I’m so upset about all this prosperity that tax cuts have ushered in. That’s it.

  30. puck says:

Despite similar-sounding names, “Republicans for Kovach” are not our allies.
