In the middle of John McCain’s dopey Britney & Paris attack ad, the announcer gravely asks of Barack Obama: “Is He Ready to Lead?” An equally good question is whether McCain is ready to lead. For a man who will turn 72 this month, he’s a surprisingly immature politician—erratic, impulsive and subject to peer pressure from the last knucklehead who offers him advice. The youthful insouciance that for many years has helped McCain charm reporters like me is now channeled into an ad that one GOP strategist labeled “juvenile,” another termed “childish” and McCain’s own mother called “stupid.”
Some of the voters I talked to this weekend were confused about the Paris/Britney ad. They didn’t understand what McCain was trying to say there.

You can’t say the Farmer’s Market is not full of a diversity of voters. I talked to a wide variety of voters. Most didn’t mention the ad, the ones that did were confused. Yes, I talked to people who weren’t supporting Obama as well.
I’m not racist. My humor is misunderstood. I’m just a different flavor of donviti. With sprinkles! But I don’t poke fun at dead soldiers.

True enough, but this year is a little bit different. First of all, the R candidate looks and acts like the bastard lovechild of the Chipmunks and the cast of extras from a Romero movie. Secondly, a lot of the people supporting Obama aren’t purebred Democrats that must always toe the party line.
A lot of us are independants, which means we have a broader perspective than those that have party blinders on.
Call Obama lame all you like, but the simple fact is that he won because people believe in him and Hillary was not able to make that happen for her.
That and he effectively used white guilt to his advantage by labeling everyone who dared speak against him a racist. Kudos to him for doing whatever he had to do to win, and I mean that completely without snark. Kudos, as well, to the McCain camp from learning from that performance and issuing a preemptive strike with their comments about Obama playing the race card and essentially taking that insidious little weapon out of their arsenal. It will be interesting to see what, if any, impact it will have on the race (no pun intended).
To your point about the difference this year, regardless of what you think of McCain, he is nowhere near as bad an option as Bush was in 2004…yet the Dems still found a way to blow it.

Dominique, I love ya but the facts simply do not corroborate your statement about Obama calling everyone who opposes him a racist.
As to the McCain/Bush comparison, the situation has completely changed for the republicans. Bush’s approval in in the gutter, Rs are jumping ship like crazy-ass lemmings, and the war in Iraq still had a decent amount of approval. McCain is coming into a completely new game, and he’s sleeping through it.

First, Bush’s approval rating was in the 40’s in mid-2004. It was the lowest in his presidency at that point. And he still won. Who among us saw that coming? I sure as shit didn’t. I thought Kerry would wipe the floor with him in spite of the Swiftboaters. Turns out the majority of the country wasn’t on board with what I thought.
Second, again, McCain is a better candidate than Bush was in 2004. He may not be stellar, but he’s better. I’m not saying he’s going to kick Obama’s ass. I’m not even saying he’s going to win. I’m just saying don’t be too cocky about your candidate. In fact, he should probably stop buying into his own hype a bit, too. Sticking one’s chest out too far is a bit of a turnoff. Just ask Oprah – her ratings and her magazine subscriptions are down. I wonder why.
Ferraro is most definitely a fucking racist. And she deserved everyone calling her on her shit. She can’t shovel off the stage quickly enough, and hopefully we have seen the last of that wretched female dog.
I am unaware of Obama or his campaign calling Cuomo, Clinton, Hillary, or Rendell racists. They may have said their comments are inappropriate, or not suited for this campaign, but they never said “racists.”
I’m just wondering why, if Hillary can now back Obama, why can’t the Hillbots? I would have thought they would have joined their wonderful leader.

Mike, Mike, Mike. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t worship Hillary like some may worship Obama. I don’t take my lead on what to think and feel from her. My thoughts and feelings are my own.
I didn’t support Obama in the primary because I thought he was an empty shell who was utterly unqualified for the job. That didn’t change just because he happened to have won.

I honestly think I would vote for Carney, but not support his campaign. In my mind, he is a distant second to Markell, yet still miles ahead of Protack and the never-present Bill Lee.

FTR, I am hardly in the tank for McCain. A year ago, I never would have imagined I would vote for a Republican candidate. I have NEVER voted R in a presidential election.
