Former Congressional Candidate Mike Miller to run in the new 6th
WGMD is reporting that Lewes resident Mike Miller plans to run for the newly created 6th State Senate District seat.
Need a refresher course on who Mike Miller is? Here is Celia Cohen:
Mike Miller was the Bad Old Days. He was barely an excuse for a candidate, and not just because of his petty arrest record, but for calling Saddam Hussein a legitimate leader like George W. Bush and for putting up a sign urging people to vote — on the wrong date.
Mike Miller recruited himself to run not once, but twice in 2000 and 2002, a hapless example of what happens when the party’s strategy against someone like U.S. Rep. Michael N. Castle, a Republican who also has been a governor and lieutenant governor, is unconditional surrender.
Mike Miller was one of the unknown candidates that ran against Mike Castle in 2000 and 2002. If memory vaguely serves, he has also tried to run for some other races in Kent County and statewide. In other words, he is a perennial losing candidate. And he is back. I bet he loses handily to Andy Staton. Staton has done the leg work for this race, preparing for years. Miller is just jumping in for vanity reasons.
Besides common sense, Miller lacks one other essential for winning political office–a constituency.
Staton can now raise money for the primary that he will not have to spend. If he was looking at a tough race in the general that would be helpful, but since Glen Urquhart is trying to clear Staton’s path to the seat, maybe it isn’t very noteworthy.
He’s run for the Cape Henlopen School Board 3 or 4 times, each time losing worst than the time before. The last time he ran, he said his kids were in Cape schools; in fact, his son had been expelled and was going to Eagle’s Nest Christian Academy. In the past few years, he’s been banned from district property for disrupting classes at Shields Elementary and not leaving the building when ordered (I’m pretty sure he was arrested in that last incident).
He crashed a Stonewall Democrats event in 2008 when they endorsed KHN and demanded that he be allowed to speak. This was the same time he came out against marriage equality.
Back in 2010, I saw him at the Super G. He was going on and on about how the Democratic Party screwed him out of the Congressional seat that John Carney was running for, that it was “his” seat and that the party owed it to him for the times he ran against Castle. This went on for about 10 minutes.
Then he noticed I was using the self-scanner for my groceries. He asked if I was working at the store and I explained to him that it was technology (he had opposed the technology referendum in 2009). He then asked what was to prevent me or anyone else from just putting the groceries in my bags and not scanning the bar codes. That right there explains Mike Miller’s ethics. He has none!
The all time best MM story was when he put up signs in ’02 with the election date from ’00. Mr. Staton will benefit from the double fundraising opporunity and having his name front and Center during the Primary.
I don’t even think Miller has the money to pay the filing fee.
I would not vote for Mike Miller over Andy Stanton but I’ve known Mike for at least 10 years now and he has always been friendly to me and my kid, he cares about his children and their education, and he’s a hard working man. I like him. He just needs to mellow out a little and get more positively involved in politics, he may not be a good candidate, but I bet he would make a good ally during a tough campaign. Groom him MJ, make him a better team player. Stanton needs every vote he can get, including Miller’s. Don’t forget, the 6th district is similar to the 3rd Council District and in 2004 that race came down to 3 votes.
I’ve only met him once but I found him paranoid to the point of strangeness. He needs to get as far away from politics as possible, as he has no skill set for it and no obvious qualifications.
Look, I don’t know Mike Miller personally, and in response to Anon’s comment above at 1:08, I am sure he is friendly in the non-political world and is a good hard working family man.
But politics just ain’t his bag.
Anon – there is no way to “groom” Miller for anything. The 2004 3rd District Council Race pitted Lynn Rogers against Jud Bennett. Rogers is not well liked in the Democratic party (he worked for Mark Baker in 2008 against Joan Deaver) and was lucky to have won. He has no constituency to draw on and would do more harm to any Democratic Party nominee that wins a primary. He has no influence beyond his neighbors, and even most of them can’t stand him.
And when you come out against marriage equality, claiming that G-D decreed that marriage is between one man-one woman, and then show up at a GLB Democratic function asking for votes, you either have a lot of chutzpah or are extremely stupid.
MJ I don’t think I know anyone who came out of Cape the same time Miller did who supports equality, even at the most basic level like employment. I’ve always thought that it was up to people like me and you to drag them kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. I know I’m doing my part 🙂
Anon – if you want to waste your time on a lost cause, go ahead and tilt at that Miller windmill. The rest of us will be working for serious, progressive candidates who will win elections.
And before you drag Miller into the 21st Century, you need to free him from the 13th Century.
are you saying he’s a muslim?
I recall seeing him once at a flea market. He was politicking, and everyone else was trying to avoid eye contact. A Miller campaign is always good for a few laughs.
Mike Miller should run for dog catcher of Sussex. Thats the only job he is qualified for, he is not a trust worthy human being.
