It’s Friday Afternoon – Have Purchased Your Hunger Game Tickets Yet?
First, you should know that I’m the most unreasonable mother on the earth. Why? I wouldn’t let my 14 year old daughter attend the midnight premiere of the Hunger Games last night. Now, since everyone went last night she’s stuck going with us on Saturday.
Truthfully, she was disappointed and had trouble understanding why we weren’t willing to pick her up at 2am on a school night, but she didn’t flip out – which is why I’m surprising her with tickets to the movie!
Out of all the teen book series turned into movies, The Hunger Games held the most appeal for me. I enjoyed Harry Potter and hated Twilight and its wimpy heroine with an intensity that surprised me. There aren’t enough words to express how much I loathed Twilight.
So… after that mini rant… are you going to see The Hunger Games?

tonight at Newark Cinema, with the family.
the Hunger Games books are great.
But, since she’s such a great kid, you could surprise her with another additional ticket so she wouldn’t have to be seen sitting next to mom, but could instead invite a friend, and they could sit off together somewhere else…. 🙂
I know it would be hard for mom…. but… 🙂
I totally get why you didn’t want to pick her up so late, and in previous posts all the mini-pandoras seem to have excellent heads on their shoulders, but i agree with Kavips. Your reasonable parenting has significantly dimmed your kid’s coolness factor for the week:
OMG did u see HG?!?
No, I have to wait until Saturday (TWO days after everyone else) and see it with my mom.
Pandora,
She just might be proud that her mom has a good head on her shoulders and cares enough to go with her. It might not be totally cool, but it is totally loving.
haha it’s talk like that that made me REALLY not want to hang out with my mom at 14. Big picture stuff wasn’t really my thing then, call me ungrateful if you want.
If she wants to take a friend, or friends, Mr. Pandora and I will sacrifice our tickets and spend the time suffering over dinner and drinks! 😉
haha, your sacrifice is admirable Pandora!
I will simply do anything for my kids. 😉
Just got back from newark regal…. I enjoyed it. Liked the book (s) more.
My twins went with friends at end of a half day of school. One set of parents dropped off, other picked up. My idea of a good time. I’ll see it in a week or so when it’s not crowded.
Hey… tell me your secret, Steve! Getting out of driving is a parent’s dream! We would have gone tonight, but she has a track meet. Yet another reason to nix the midnight show!
I’m rushing to finish the first book it since our family is going to the movie on Sunday.
My son just asked if his friend could stay with us this weekend. He’s arriving tomorrow, before we go to The Hunger Games. Thank god for fandango!
Haven’t read the books, so I’m waiting! 🙂
Just back from the Hunger Games. Really, really good! If you’re debating on seeing it… GO!
Im taking mini-Aoine – she has read the books and wanted to see the movies but is afraid that the characters will disappoint
she has a sunburn from Friday outside all day – so is waffling on going tomorrow afternoon with Mom
I gonna go anyway -she will probably tag along after some tylenol and lidocaine gel on her arms – 🙂
I have given her all your reviews so her interest is piqued.
possible spoilers…
pandora… I really enjoyed the movie (the book, as always, is better) but the story felt rushed. Girlfriend and i have a theory that since there are (ive heard) 3 movies to go and only 2 books, they have used the first one as a setup and wont skip as many details in the following movies.
(apologies for geeking out)
Not going. Haven’t read them. Don’t plan to.
I am adding these to my really considerable list of really popular things I have not participated in. Experts can tell me how far off Wikipedia is on this one… is not the whole point of the primary love relationship mutual exploitation for advantage? The evil people who set up the contest are those dreadful folks in Washington? It’s all a massive reality tv event?
Gosh. Still not excited about it.
So you knew this was coming, right?
Paranoid Conservatives Warp The Hunger Games To Fit Their Anti-Obama Fantasies
Sheesh. I haven’t seen it and most likely won’t. But when the wingnuts try to claim that a hugely popular bit of popular culture, you always know that they are working overtime to make themselves more relevant than they are.
saw it loved it – go see it!
the more i think about it, the less i like the movie. I dont think i would read the book if i saw the film first. the whole thing seemed geared toward the youngest fans who would drag their parents to the movie, thus selling more tickets. Really not impressed with Gary Ross.
Also, foxheads who want to talk about the “messages about government” in this movie clearly haven’t read the entire series. there IS an allegory for extreme left with governance, but it isnt the Capitol…. shocking huh? Fox News saying something without all the facts?
A movie is a movie and a book is a book. That said, I don’t think this movie deals effectively with the female protagonist.
If I hadn’t read the book, I’m not sure I’d understand the relationships at all. Part of that is probably due to the fact that this is really part 1 of a 3 part movie.
I’m not a big fan of movies that are not whole, self-contained and complete works.
is it 3 or 4? ive heard both.
I was let down by the total lack of character development or back story… (10 seconds of flashback footage to explain the relationship between Katniss and her mother??!) If the story Gary Ross is trying to tell is the what happens to Panem after the 74th Hunger Games, then I will accept this first movie as exposition and even forgive the flagrant and unnecessary deviations from the book. For those of you who read the book and saw the movie, it is clear the book is first person narrative, and the movie is more third person (all of scenes that Katniss couldnt be seeing)
If however, the following movies are the same, then i have to question why Suzanne Collins allowed her name to be so closely attached to the movie.
We discussed this issue, J. My son says it was hard to translate to the screen because so much of the book takes place in Katniss’ head. It’s in Katniss’ thoughts that we learn about her and her motivation.
Here’s what I loved about the movie – There was not one damsel in distress moment, not one moment where she steps out of character to do something not so smart. Katniss is the hero. Her survival is based on who she is. At no time do we question her actions. She is one of the most consistent female leads I have ever seen. Uh oh… I feel a post coming on!
FTR – Excellent, but brief, performances by Stanley Tucci and Lenny Kravitz.
“Uh oh… I feel a post coming on!”
PLEASE. DO! seriously, my inner geek is aching for a gloves off discussion of this story!
Pan, the things you like about the movie are also true in the book…. there IS a little too much “who should i love” (btw, Peeta is probably the text book definition of a mensch) going on for MY tastes… but Katniss is a MUCH better heroine than say…. Bella Swan.
I think Gary Ross is trying to tell the story out of Katniss’s head…i kind of guessed all the internal dialog would go away.. all the more reason to pay attention to details like what time of day things happen, the color of the cat, how people die… etc.
LOL! You’re going to love the title of my post, Ben! Working on it now!
Started the second book. Pretty terrible.
