In the spirit of an idol of mine that had the courage to commit suicide, my question of the day is what book  have you read the past decade has become a movie and has best captured or come as close as possible to capturing how you envisioned hollywood portraying that beloved novel?

    Two:

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas

    No Country for Old Men

  2. Another Mike says:

I’ll say “The Corner” by David Simon, although it was made into a mini-series on HBO, not a movie. Book and mini-series are top-notch.

  3. Not Brian says:

I am a huge fan of ‘The Wire’, I need to check that out…

  4. delawaredem says:

Patriot Games and Clear & Present Danger
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

  5. Stella Bluez says:

I was amazed by the Lord of the Rings….a favorite series of mine since school days….NEVER thot it could be a movie…..well done.

“Under The Volcano” by Malcolm Lowry, one of my favorite novels. Of course no movie could capture the glory of the prose, but the 1984 movie with Albert Finney and Jacqueline Bisset caught some of the mood and was excellent.

For years I said another of my favorite books, Milton’s “Paradise Lost” should be a movie. Now someone is doing it, and I wonder how it will come out. It would be easy to botch.

  7. Linoge says:

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but only the extended, uncut versions. Sure, each book is three hours long… but it is worth it!

  8. Joanne Christian says:

    How the Grinch Stole Christmas

  9. Dorian Gray says:

…A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream! Not Brain is correct. Although Gilliam could never capture Thompson’s detail he didn’t capture the spirit and pace of the novel.

Even though everyone remembers the opening line, I always loved the second. Perhaps because I’ve had many “similar” experiences:

“I remember saying something like,’I feel a a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive’.”

“He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.”
    -Dr. Johnson

    Into the Wild.

and no one who ever committed suicide did so courageously.
