Saturday Open Thread [8.18.12]

Filed in Open Thread by on August 18, 2012

It is a beautiful Saturday! And it is 23 days til Delaware’s Primary. Political junkies everywhere are supporting their candidates today. What are you doing today?

The Philadelphia Folk Festival is going on this weekend too. If you aren’t there, you can listen to Main Stage performances via iradiophilly.com.

Team Obama releases a video rebutting Romney’s whiteboard lying session re: Medicare. Interestingly, Stephanie Cutter clearly calls out Rmoney for lying about the President’s position on Medicare repeatedly, so nice that the gloves are off:

Now we need the media to step up and deal with what is true and what is false here. Yes, I do crack myself up.

What interests you today?

It has absolutely nothing to do with politics, but today about 11am was when my sixteen-year-old daughter got back from spending a week at the Beach with a friend’s family. Funny how you don’t know precisely how much you’ll miss them (like when college comes in two years) until they are out of the house and all you can hear are echoes. Much more important than politics….

Thank you, Steve. I love articles that illustrate the shallow intellectualism combined with lack of empathy that so brilliantly characterize the libertarian movement.

  3. Steve Newton says:

Actually, I didn’t even read the article–I just liked the title, and thought you’d get a kick out of it.

  4. Geezer says:

I think you’d agree with me. It’s just a comparison of the portion of the federal budget going to SS/Medicare in 1970 vs. today — 20% then, 50% now. Um…I think my response is basically, “duh.” Baby boom then, geezer boom now. I’m pretty sure it was predictable — in fact, it was not only predicted, it was budgeted for under Reagan.

The article is incomplete, though, as it fails to factor in the lack of ice floes due to global warming.

  5. Steve Newton says:

I suspect you’re right and that if you could do the simulation that you’d find a bulge in Federal spending following the boomers from the 1950s til now–you’d just have to allow for counting different programs at different stages of their generational life.

Accordingly, since I’m a late Boomer, I guess the most patriotic thing I could for my country then would be to off myself now.

But even you gotta admit you don’t get to see your nom de plume that often in headlines. . . .

Here’s another group of GOP wingnuts who don’t want Rmoney — this time they are encouraging convention delegates to vote for Sarah Palin.

Two days late on a replay, however, we led a huge canvas throughout the 6th District. 21 days out!

  8. Hector says:

I for one give credit to the GOP for trying to face the issues, but, the backfire is inevitable, the more they try to lie their way out the more people will want to inform themselves, and the more they become well informed voters. scary stuff for the Republican Tea Party, they prey on uninformed voters and love to cause confusion
