Sure that lots of folks, when they hear the word ‘farmer,’ don’t realize that these corporations are holding (and/or are selling off) farmlands worth millions,tens of millions, considering resort area. Many bought ages ago for next to nothing – land rich.
When it’s time to sell, one can be sure they are well represented at the zoning hearing for top dollar.
Poor farmers.
What other business can have a product failure, and the government rushes in to help them out, if they’re sitting on millions – or barely anything? Just wondering. Good for the goose/gander.

That would be the owners of horse racing tracks.
SW: A large number of them grow a crop — chickens — that they don’t actually own. If they grow for certain chicken corporations, they are given both chickens and feed, aren’t they?
The point is that the Paul Harvey piece was a steaming helping of the myths that we Americans prefer to the ugly truth. Which is only natural considering that the whole point was to get you to buy a truck, not a farm.
There are 19 times more chicken residents in Sussex than human residents. The accumulated brain power is just about even.

Google “sussex county delaware farms” and you’ll get 6 corporations on the first page. Perdue is one of them.
Perdue doesn’t own farms. Google search results are not truth.

Which sort of bypasses the fact that most production farms of any size operate as corporations for many reasons.
Delaware’s poultry business operates largely as n “integrated” part of the major poultry processors, right? These mom and pop corporations (mainly) work for a processor providing chickens under contract. Not unlike farmers in alot of places, the paper value of the land they work sold for other purposes can be worth a great deal — even if the farming operation that is on it might not be.
Cassandra: I’m not sure what your point is about the land value. Farmers shouldn’t be allowed to sell their land? Please clarify.
Roland: I’m sorry you don’t understand that Perdue does not own farms. And another on that Google results list, Royal Farms, is a gas station chain. That’s why Google results are not the gospel truth.
SW, this conversation has multiple voices making multiple points. Mine relates back to the points made in this comment. You can stop lecturing people about the value of google while you figure out how to follow the conversation right in front of you.

No, but only because they’ve figured out a more lucrative business model: They own the chickens and feed, while the farmer picks up the rest of the expenses. The farmer is reduced to a contract worker.
