The Bigots’ Response
They are calling for the immediate repeal of the marriage equality law, I suppose not realizing that the 12 Senators and 23 Representatives are not going to repeal a law they fought hard to get passed. And apparently not realizing that once civil rights are expanded to new groups and classes of people, they are hardly ever rolled back. Indeed, the Hate Amendment in California is the only example I can think of, and even that attempt is about to be struck down as unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Here is a rescued comment from one Ecia. I moderated her (or his) comments on the prior Marriage Equality thread because she (or he) started spamming the thread with this drivel. But I decided to highlight this comment to reveal how bigoted and stupid the opponents of equality are.
Here is her (or his) comment:
Calling For Repeal SB75:
As The State Government has completely ignored the legitimate concerns of the People of Delaware, there is an urgent call for A Special Election to REPEAL SB75 or to do something to correct this unjust law that Desecrates God’s Word.
Let me stop you there. The General Assembly ignored your bigotry. They did not ignore the legitimate concerns of the People of Delaware. To the contrary, they addressed a very legitimate concern: equality for all. What is it with conservatives thinking they always speak for all the people of the state or country. And they loudly pronounce that they are speaking for all the people and all the people agree with them. They doth protest too much. They know their minority and bigoted views are not shared by the majority anymore and it scares the living shit out of them, so they have to scream louder that they do speak for all, I guess thinking that if you shout a lie loud enough and often enough it turns out to be true. But I digress…
Second, a special election? Did a Representative or Senator die or resign? No. So there can be no special election. But Ecia is talking about a referendum here. Thankfully, we don’t have referenda in Delaware. Not because I fear losing a referendum. In fact, the forces of good and equality would win such a vote. I just don’t think it is right to have a vote on someone’s rights. How would you like it Ecia if we voted on whether you could get married to the one you loved?
“A just law is a man-made code that squares with moral law or God’s law” If necessary, I am prepared to go to jail before complying with any law that so blatantly desecrates the most sacred gift from God, The Institute of Marriage.
Unless you are a Clerk of the Peace, as a citizen this law does nothing to you. It does not force you to comply with anything. You do not have to become gay married now. You do not have to become gay now. You even don’t have to stop hating gays now. But I guess because you are such a hateful evil bigot you are incensed that gays get to get married and live happily and be accepted in society now, and your living with that fact without doing something to stop it is “compliance” in your book. So go ahead. Do something stupid and violent. Get thrown in jail. Your incarceration will please me greatly.
Delaware’s Marriage Equality Law is a Slap/Spit in the Face of the Church and People of Faith Across this state. Except for the Grace of God, these Delaware lawmakers should be ASHAMED to step inside any church in this state or anywhere on this planet.
Once again you assume that all people of faith and all churches on this planet are as evil and bigoted as you. Many religions, many faiths, and many people of faith are tolerant and loving and accepting of gay marriage. The UCC. Many Episcopal Churches. And many Catholics disagree with the pedophiles in their Church hierarchy and approve of equality. Indeed, someone commented last night that there are 300 out and proud gays that worship in the 1100 member congregation that Senator Lopez attends. Those 300 remain proud, as should ever single one of the 35 legislators that voted for this bill. If anyone should be ashamed, it will be Ernie Lopez, since he has to face his gay friends at home and in his church again. So stop speaking for all. You don’t.
Frankly, The Delaware Marriage Equality law is BAD legislation in many, many aspects for everyone on both sides of this issue. However, Considering that MARRIAGE is the core foundation of the human society, the real danger is that this law redefines the traditional MARRIAGE as it has existed since the beginning of time; and it does not provide protection for individuals or businesses with conscientious objection to this redefinition of marriage.
It is already illegal to discriminate against someone on the basis of their being a homosexual. If you are doing this, you are a criminal and should be sued for everything you have and/or jailed. And in a society that values equality, like ours, we do not protect bigots.
Although, I support the Traditional Marriage; i.e. a union between a man and woman, I respect and cherish the founding principles as well as the diversity of this great nation, I understand that many people do not accept this religious doctrine. Hence, I can understand those elected officials who support Civil Unions or Domestic Partnerships; however, that is where I must draw the RED LINE.
No, you do not respect and cherish our founding principles or our diversity. One of our founding principles is the separation of church and state. Our founders protected the free exercise of religion, allowing you to worship whatever God you please, but they also explicitly prohibited the establishment of a national religion. The First Amendment established a wall of separation between religion and government. You obviously reject that founding principle and believe we should live in a theocracy rather than in a democracy. You also do not respect our diversity since you just argued for the right to discriminate against gays in your previous paragraph. That is the opposite of respecting diversity.
In addition, Civil Unions and Domestic Partnerships can rightfully provide state governments with a mechanism to ensure that we fully protect all people in this country, regardless of religious beliefs or sexual orientation, other than for egotistical desires it was absolutely unnecessary for Delaware lawmakers to DEFILE Christianity and other religious doctrines around the world by SANCTIONING Same-Sex Marriage in this state. When there is no justice, there can be no peace.
Separate but equal is not equal. It is not justice. And now there is justice, and peace. Goodbye to you Ecia.
We gotta stop giving churches tax exempt status.
great response to most of the arguments that keep getting tossed arond. Logic (and love!) always prevail!
Look culture and time moves on. These people are trapped in the past and only idling in the present. Now that we’re winning they’re scared and isolated. I suggest they seek therapy to deal with reality. They’re confused and I feel sorry for them, but time ticks on whether you dig it or you don’t.
Anyway, like I said yesterday, I’m proud to be an east coast, liberal elite! People may say “progessive” is a bad word, but time and cultural do move and only every in one direction. (MLK had a great quote about this.) π Trying to stop (or reverse it) is futile and quite possibly insane.
All this gay marriage stuff is boring. Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring. The only other news that can top that, is if Jose Mourinho is taking his place, and the only news that could top that, is if he is brings Christiano Ronaldo with him.
The Special One’s triumphant return to Britain! I can get behind that…That’d be cool.
I hate United and I hate Sir Alex…. and I really hate that Portugese giraffe CR. So really I hope they hire another Scot (David Moyes) and they don’t win another title for 50 years!
Who are these people you speak of? Alex Ferguson? Jose Mourinho? Christiano Ronaldo? Are they Senators? Baseball players? Never heard of them.
Footballers and managers in Europe
The manager of Manchester United is retiring after 24 years and 13 league titles… it’s a big deal. I fucking hate the guy but he’s the greatest club manager who ever lived.
The NFL has moved to Europe? Wow. I didn’t know that. π
1. God defined marriage in the Bible as being between one man and multiple women. So in that sense, “traditional marriage” has been outlawed for well over a millennium.
2. Leviticus has things to say about sex between men, but not about same sex marriage or love.
3. When these bigots say “people of faith”, they mean “people of MY faith”, since they’re 100% OK with trying to tell my Rabbi which marriages he can or can’t bless. If you are a Christian trying to dictate religious practices to a Rabbi, you are wholly against religious freedom and should stop pretending otherwise.
Don’t start. π The English invented the game. I call it what they call it… they earned the right to name it. Not to mention the other 5.75 billion non-American people on earth…
Ecia seems to know how everyone feels about same-sex marriage, so I am sure he/she knows how the legislative process works. If this person wants the law repealed, I suggest he/she start working to find a legislator who will sponsor this legislation, build public momentum for it, have it introduced, worked through committees in each house and voted upon. It’s that easy.
I get it, FBH. Civil rights are boring, whereas the same four teams winning the league every single year (often by margins of 1-0 or 1-1) are the very height of excitement.
I will repeat this here as it seems an appropriate response to ecia’s rejection of the LAW that was just passed
1 Peter 2:13: βFor the Lordβs sake accept the authority of every human institution, whether of the emperor as supreme, or of governors, as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right.β
so much for the Bible
Paul wrote in Romans 13:1: βLet every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resist authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.β
I’m sick of hearing people go on about “traditional” football… This is the 21st century, people!
I’m with LG: The bigotry must end. Time for football equality!
Now that we have progressed to this point perhaps we can imagine the progression to a time where any two people can form a union for the benefit of both and stop pretending that government has any authority to sanctify anything, much less marriage.
There are situations, such as with the elderly, where such a relationship would be beneficial but is not allowed because they are already related. A pair of elderly sisters, for example, where one has health insurance and decent social security and the other doesn’t. They can’t and don’t want to marry but they live together for economic reasons.
I recognize the number may be small, but why would that be a criteria for how they are treated under the law and by society? Civil unions are not just a stepping stone for the (now accomplished) marital bliss of gays. Civil unions should be a stepping stone for recognizing that any two people should have a right to form a beneficial union that is recognized by government and society regardless of what they do or don’t do in the bedroom. Now that would be progressive!
How do we know you’re not sockpuppeting your own target bigot? The language seems too dovetailed for the responses.
@X Stryker… C’mon, bashing soccer as boring? That’s so 1995. I thought we were progressing. π Audere est facere! COYS… Huge fixture this afternoon. My boys travel to Stamford Bridge to show the Blues a thing or three… mostly just to show them Gareth Bale’s greatness… but I digress from the digression…
How did this get from crazy loon to the definition of football? Anyway, I know a number of folks like this christian crazy – most live in Mississippi and elsewhere in the deep South. They are quick to bitch and moan, quote the usual talking points from Fox news and never seem to have time to vote. Oh, and they know everything.
Thanks for the delicious smackdown. Made my day.
@newfie, I suppose you just have to take my word for it. I mean, I could remove the comment from spam on the original MARRIAGE EQUALITY IS THE LAW thread last night so you could see it there, but that would not allay your fears that I wrote the comment myself. I could have my fellow contributors confirm to you that they see the different IP Address of the comment and the email address of the commenter, but I am sure you will say that they are lying to cover for me. And I do not plan to publish this person’s IP Address or email address because that is private information and we do not out such identifying information. This is not Delaware Politics.
So, you are just going to have to take my word for it. If that does not satisfy you, you are free to leave.
COYS is right, I would hate to see Clint Dempsey suffer through another season without going to the Champion’s League. 4th place is all I’m asking for.
Now that we have progressed to this point perhaps we can imagine the progression to a time where any two people can form a union for the benefit of both
This was the final episode of Boston Legal, right? π
Reminds me of the 2008 election when Republicans discovered that everything Obama did or said was “unconstitutional”, no proof or valid argument required. I suspect Ecia is old, white and lives in Sussex, there are plenty more like him/her/it down there. On a lighter note it should make “The March For Jesus” on the 11th at the capitol that much more fun.
@ Dorian Gray .
Yes it is a big game. I’m home from work just to watch it. If Spurs don’t win today, they pretty much have to hope Arsenal lose against Wigan, to keep realistic hopes of making it into the CL on their own terms…… COYS, and our boy Dempsey.
BTW, football and American football were once the same game.
Yes yes, gosh, who will win, will it be the team from London, or the team from Manchester? Or maybe the other team from London, or the other team from Manchester? But wouldn’t it be an amazing feat if instead, the winner turned out to be the OTHER other team from London?!? Oh, and which team that isn’t from London or Manchester will get flushed down to a lower league?
Sorry DG, I am a bit unreconstructed when it comes to the round arts, but at least I mock from a position of some awareness rather than absolute ignorance.
OI! X, do not forget that your wife is a Spurs fan because her British friends told her to be. That and Newcastle. Come on, The Toon!

@DG and @FBH, don’t forget that the thing about Arsenal is that they’re always trying to walk it in.
“This was the final episode of Boston Legal, right? ”
Actually yes, Cassandra. That episode was sort of an epiphany for me. If we want to talk about equality and all that…I’m actually surprised anyone remembered that. Still, I bet there is no energy to see that through. There was a slim chance of making that happen by riding same-sex coat tails but, now that battle is won there will be little interest for the rest of it.
That situation could be dealt with by getting the Government out of the marriage business all together. If the Government was just concerned with civil unions — the declared contract of two people — and let churches just do marriages (but not the contracts) people could make life partnership decisions that deal with care and management and inheritance. I doubt that will happen any time soon (although I think that is the Christianists who are up in arms about gay marriage were smart, they’d be advocating for this), though.
I’m surprised Delaware Dem would take the time to respond to such drivel. As a general rule, when a commenter capitalizes words for No Apparent Reason, they aren’t worth a response.
But since Ecia’s comments are being addressed, let me offer the following thought to Ecia:
When marriage equality passed in other states, the anti-gay forces usually fulminated and boasted of their plans to undo the new law. In Iowa, NOM initiated a Take Back Iowa campaign. In NY, it announced a 3-phase strategy to take over the New York state legislature in 2012 and then put a constitutional amendment on the ballot.
None of these things ever amounted to anything. But at least they went through the motions of acting like it might happen.
But now, in Delaware? Absolutely nothing from the anti-gay side in terms of any strategy or plan to undo this law. Silence. Crickets. In fact, NOM has yet to even acknowledge its enactment, preferring to silently move on. They don’t even want to go through the ritual of issuing vain threats.
No my dear Ecia, if there is to be a campaign to repeal DE marriage equality, you Will Have To Run It Yourself.
“That situation could be dealt with by getting the Government out of the marriage business all together…”
Exactly what I said here some time ago. Unfortunately there is no energy to move the equality ball any further down the field towards that goal line because number of people interested or impacted is too small. It’s sort of like orphan diseases which no one cares about because not enough people are dying from them.
Ecia, excesses will be their own undoing. This aweful, foolish social engineering masquerading as a civil rights movement will fail. This law will be repealed in the future. Stand tall and educate people. They will quit because they won. Look in Iowa, all of the Supreme Court Justices that imposed it lost and a pro-family Governor won after that.
This is tougher, because here in the last two years, the mood in Delaware shifted inexplicably. Even the governor who signed the DOMA and just last election won reelection to the Senate favoring traditional marriage shifted. It is now 50/50 so the so called progressive forces do not fear losing and right now, they are probably right. Frankly, people on our side have nothing to fear either. What you saw were people voting their hearts. Sadly, you did not see them voting their brains and considering the impact on families, marriage, and the next generation.
stimulate me intellectually David…
tell me – what impact does SSM have on families, what empirical data do you cite, link please
tell me – what impact does SSM have on marriage, what empirical data do you cite, link please

Delusional David spilled alot of words to try to justify his bigotry. Just remember folks, he will live long enough for his children and his grandchildren to pity him for succumbing to this prejudice.
Sorry. Was that David or George Wallace just after the University of Alabama was integrated by Kennedy?
Oh, that was David Anderson. He use to have a blog people visited and commented on.
(BTW, did you know that Delaware Libertarian has deleted Delaware Politics from their blogroll due to bad behavior?)
When will people like those at DP learn that
1 June Cleaver took off her pearls , burned her bra and got a job…….she now is retired and living in a nudist colony.
2. Ward Cleaver finally came out of the closet divorced June , moved to Delaware and married his long time best friend and golfing partner.
3. Wally went to college, protested the war and now draws political cartoons for the media networks- his parents are proud of him
4. And Beaver? Well, he is still just the Beav………
The Beav was killed in Vietnam.
“you did not see them voting their brains and considering the impact on families, marriage, and the next generation.”
Mainly because there will be no impact on families, marriage or the next generation — except, of course, for bigotry to have its veil of religious bullshit pulled back and revealed for the ugly superstitious bullshit it is.
No, the Beav never served in Vietnam. He is alive and presumably well.
I had a brief chat with Jerry Mathers after his terrific Broadway performance in Hairspray in 2007.
