Who’s the bigger DINO? Carper or Lieberman?
Let’s take a side by side comparison:
Issue | Carper | Lieberman |
---|---|---|
Iraq | Voted for war, but recanted and supports timetables | Pushed for war, still supports it |
Torture | For it | For it |
Bankruptcy Bill | Sponsored it | Voted against it but also voted against filibustering it |
Alito | Voted against him but also voted against filibustering him | Ditto, and now says he regrets voting against him at all |
Telecom Immunity | For it | For it |
Warrantless wiretapping | Against it in principle, but voted for bill expanding it | LOVES IT |
Alberto Gonzalez | Against him | For him |
CAFTA | For it | For it |
Tort reform (anti-consumer, pro-corporate) | For it | For it |
Cheney Energy Bill | Against it | For it |
Abortion | NARAL Rating: 50% | 100% |
Gay Rights | HRC Rating: 67% | 89% |
Pro-corporation | CoC Rating: 70% | 25% |
Education | Against vouchers | For vouchers |
Energy Independence | CAF Rating: 67% | 100% |
Environment | LCV rating: 89% | 42% |
Gun Registration | For it | Against it |
1993 Clinton Health Care | Wasn’t in office | Against it |

Color me surprised that my name wasn’t on there.
This chart is really instructive. Bet you could add Mike Castle to the chart and his record would be absolutely competitive. Both of them largely voting in line with their corporate constituents.
It strikes me that the Blue States Bluer strategy could use some tweaking.
Bottom Line: They both suck.
Deep Thought: I wonder what kind of record Carper would have to compile to induce a primary challenge?
Carper would be highly vulnerable to a self-motivated, self-funded candidate who is able to clearly articulate a Democratic platform.
But without that kind of candidate, Carper will be kept safe and warm by whatever the hell kind of deal he cut long ago.
Carper would have to oppose Obama’s health care plan. I’ll bet that would do it.
Dennis Rochford?
I hope this is not hurting him, but I always found Carper a sensible person. He is independent minded. That is your real problem with him.
My problem with him is his support for torture.
He didn’t support torture. He refused to criminalize rare but necessary tactics which have saved American lives. That is just a myth. Show me the vote where Tom Carper voted yes on torture.
He didn’t support torture. He refused to criminalize rare but necessary tactics which have saved American lives.
Now you are torturing logic.
I’ll translate:
“He refused to criminalize” – he legalized
“rare but necessary tactics” – torture
“He refused to criminalize rare but necessary tactics” = “He legalized torture”.
Show us where torture has saved American lives?
And since you think torture is a “necessary tactic”, I guess you’re perfectly on-board with having American soldiers tortured when they’re captured.
Why do you hate our troops?
