Lisa Blunt Rochester to Run for Congress
Someone not named a variant of Brian to make it a three way.
Rep. John Carney’s decision last month to run for governor has opened up his at-large seat to Delaware Democrats hoping to make it to Washington.
The day after the three-term member made his announcement, state Sen. Bryan Townsend, a corporate lawyer in Wilmington, got into the race. A week later, state Rep. Bryon Short, a small business owner and former aide to Sen. Thomas R. Carper, followed suit.
Now a third Democrat is expected to get into the race.
Lisa Blunt Rochester, who served as Delaware’s first African-American female secretary of Labor, is likely to announce her campaign in the coming weeks, a source who is familiar with her thinking told CQ Roll Call Thursday.
In a safe Democratic district that President Barack Obama carried twice, the winner of the primary will almost surely win the seat.
EMILY’s List has met with Rochester, and is encouraging her to run.
“Lisa Blunt Rochester has been a fierce advocate for Delaware families,” EMILY’s List Communications Director Marcy Stech told CQ Roll Call. “We are excited to see that she’s taking a serious look at this race — she would be a strong leader in Washington who knows how to create opportunity for all.”
According to the Roll Call piece, Sean Barney is also eyeing a run. If it becomes a democratic four way race, we may see someone elected to congress (essentially because the Dem primary is the race) with the lowest vote total since reconstruction.
I don’t know her but would love to see a qualified woman win this race.
She certainly has the resume
I know her. She’s a Rockstar!
This does not deserve a thread of its own, but we’ve received a tip from a usually reliable source claiming that former State Rep Dennis E. Williams will indeed run for the congressional seat.
He will have less impact than Rose Izzo. In fact, like Izzo, he won’t even carry his own RD. Won’t come close, in fact.
He’s just cashing in on the awesome name recognition of Dennis P Williams.
I’m glad she’s running but I wish she would run for something locally, like Wilmington mayor.
Right, El Som. Dennis E. and Lisa would split the Wilmington vote.
Then, if Barney and Short split the Carperite (Oops, my Grammarly app says this should be “corporate” but I don’t think there’s a difference) vote, Townsend takes the rest — and hopes that it’s enough to win.
I’ve been hoping one of the Wilmington mayoral candidates will take a page out of Pa Kennedy’s playbook and run Dennis E. Williams for mayor. (Edit: 1946 Mass. Senate election, two guys names Joseph Russo in the Dem. primary)
Dennis E does not live in the City, unless he moved.
Dennis E. Williams is the former 10th RD rep not the current mayor.
If 100% of the black vote were to be split between Lisa and Dennis E., the percentages would be: Lisa: 100% Dennis E: 0.
As someone asked on the Al Show Tuesday, where would Dennis E get any money to run?
She appears a decent candidate.
Time for a change
I would worry that each additional candidate will make it easier for Tom Carper 2.0 — the BryonBot — to win a plurality.
I wonder if Carpertronix Labs Inc is involved?
I went to grade school with the Blunt sisters, at St. Peter’s Cathedral.
Is Blunt Rochester pro-choice?
Yes.
