Warren And Clinton Meet Today

Filed in National by on June 10, 2016

Via The Hill:

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) will meet privately with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Friday, the Washington Post reported.
The meeting comes one day after Warren formally endorsed Clinton, and amid rampant speculation that Warren is being considered as a possible running mate for Clinton.
The two women have spoken several times in recent weeks, including a 30-minute conversation, the Post reported.

A Thursday report said Warren is considering joining Clinton’s ticket if asked, but has some concerns, including whether a two-woman ticket is a good idea.
I say… Go for it. People unwilling to vote for a woman won’t vote for Hillary no matter who here VP is. That said, I get voting for a President and Vice President of the same gender hasn’t been done before. 😉

I absolutely think Warren would be phenomenal in the executive branch, I just worry about losing her voice and power in the Senate. VP isn’t really known for path-forging, nor is it supposed to be. Beyond just myself, is there concern over losing her from the Senate?

  2. pandora says:

That’s a concern, and the one that has me hesitating. Still, it would be way cool!

“I just worry about losing her voice and power in the Senate. VP isn’t really known for path-forging, nor is it supposed to be.”

Fuck that. In a mere 8 years Warren would be the presumptive Dem nominee.

  4. Delaware Dem says:

Brian…. Bernie Sanders has grown in stature to be 2 Elizabeth Warrens.

  5. Delaware Dem says:

    Elizabeth was great yesterday

“including whether a two-woman ticket is a good idea.”

Also, both would be from the northeast. I don’t really know whether any of that means anything anymore. It never meant anything to me when I lived in California. I’m sure the political enthusiasts have some thoughts on whether gender and geography actually matter when it comes to the VP choice.

Still wouldn’t you rather keep a senate seat?

  7. Jason330 says:

“Also, both would be from the northeast. I don’t really know whether any of that means anything anymore.”

It doesn’t. The modern VP pick is all about base activation. Warren is perfect. The Massachusetts Senate seat will be kept in Democratic hands.

I have no problem with two women, although Warren is smart to at least consider that it might be a problem with voters. They need to game out how to respond to that issue.

Oddly, I think Warren as VP candidate has the potential to make the campaign less about identity politics (“I’m with her”) and more about bringing pressing economic issues to the forefront of the campaign. Warren would bring much needed credibility and reassurance on those issues.

My concern with Warren is that the media will make it a game of trying to spot policy differences between P and VP, thus “discord”. And there are policy differences. I am uneasy that Warren will play along and mute her voice on those issues, thus achieving the “neutering” that Republicans and DINOs were unable to accomplish.

  9. pandora says:

I’m pretty sure Clinton and Warren will discuss those issues, and how to address them, prior to Warren accepting the VP slot. Clinton won’t mute Warren’s voice. That’s how you neuter the pick. If she chooses Warren she chooses all of Warren.

If they can’t agree, then Warren won’t be the pick. If they agree then Warren agreed to the terms. See how that works?

BTW, Twitter was horrible last night to Warren. Called her every name in the book.

  10. Jason330 says:

    @Puck two words: Margaery Tyrell

  11. puck says:

“If they agree then Warren agreed to the terms. See how that works?”

Any terms will not be public. I suppose each of us will reach our own conclusion about what the terms are or should be. That is why the game will be to spot either discord or neutering. But the are both smart women, and I imagine they would play it well.

  12. pandora says:

Warren won’t become a robot and Clinton wouldn’t pick her if she wanted to silence her on her core issues (a robot). If Warren is the pick then both women decided how to play this.

All that said, I’m still not sure if Warren is the pick. She may be helping Clinton choose a VP.

    Margaery Tyrell! I adore her!

  13. puck says:

If Warren is the pick, do Hillary’s Wall Street donors abandon her for the general?

I haven’t checked to see what proportion of money comes from Wall Street. And vs. Trump it may not matter.

It would be funny if Wall Street donors supported Hillary in the primary to stop Sanders, and then they end up with Warren.

  14. Delaware Dem says:

I think the calculation here is that any Wall Street Donor is stuck with Clinton, and that she doesn’t not have to cowtow to them. The devil you know versus the devil you don’t is at work here.

Clinton will say to them where are you gonna go?

  15. Liberal Elite says:

@p “If Warren is the pick, do Hillary’s Wall Street donors abandon her for the general?”

I don’t think that’s the important question. The question is whether they will start to shower money on Trump. So far, there’s no indication that they’re going to do that.

  16. Dave says:

Money seeks stability. Or rather, those with money seek stability. I can’t imagine big money throwing their fortunes in with Trump. It’s like playing roulette and they typically do not bet unless it’s a sure thing. Which since we are in the general, is a problem for the Trump campaign – where do they get the money now that they need it?

  17. Jason330 says:

Money seeks stability. I used to think that. Then George W. Bush.
