UPDATE: 12:28 – I called again to see if there has been any recent thinking on the Senator’s part regarding Paul Ryan’s plans to phase out Medicare next year. There hasn’t been. Senator Carper still has no position on Paul Ryan’s plainly stated intention to phase out Medicare next year.
I just called Carper’s DC office (202) 224-2441, and it is simply outrageous that Senator Tom Carper “has no position” on Paul Ryan’s plans to phase out Medicare next year. Ryan made his intentions clear three days ago. It is infuriating and ridiculous.
Ryan’s plan will provide massive subsidies to private insurance companies, many of whom are Carper contributors. Time to run that photo of Carper in his NASCAR-style jacket.
Might I suggest that everyone reading this call Carper’s DC office [(202) 224-2441], and ask, “Does the Senator have a position on the phase out of Medicare?” until the Senator has a position on Paul Ryan’s plans?
It will only take a minute of your time.

I called and got an aide directly. He said (of course) that he could not speak for the Senator, and offered to pass along my question about Social Security (although my question was about Medicare).
I already have a box full of those Carper reponses, so I rephrased it as a comment: “I am encouraging Senator Carper to come out NOW with a public statement about Paul Ryan’s plan to privatize Medicare and Social Security. It’s important to oppose those plans now and not to wait until they are published. We’ve seen the drafts before.” So that is the message I left.
I totally expect Carper’s position to be “I have to wait until I see the plan.” That’s not good enough.
Doesn’t the Senator have a position on this important issue? It is pretty straightforward. I think front line call takers should have a ready response.

Right. Subsidies to insurance through Obamacare is evil and socialist but this won’t be. Somehow.
At least (under the GOP version) Insurance companies will not have to pretend to be spending the subsidy on something other than shareholder profits.

Senator Stockholm Syndrome. He is to Delaware what the Clintons were to Washington. If we can unite on one issue, it’s that Carper must go and be replaced by someone who is not in thrall to the corporate interests that fund his campaigns.
Isn’t he up in 2018? Can we please find a primary challenger if he runs again?

Also 10:02 – I just called again. And he still has no comment. Which.. at this point, you have to wonder, why? It should be a simple “Yes. He has a position. He is against it.”
