Remember that GOP tax plan that was going to be released today? Whoops. They’re still fighting over the details, so now it will be unveiled tomorrow. Definitely tomorrow. James Fallows at The Atlantic explains what has gone wrong with our political system, and it’s not Trump. It’s the Congressional leaders who have chosen tribal loyalty […]
Criminals, Communists, Crackheads and Weirdos: Which Are You?
According to Corey Stewart, who narrowly lost the Republican gubernatorial primary to Ed Gillespie and is now running for US Senate, all Democrats fall into one of the four categories listed above. Which are you? To find out, check out this Mother Jones account of the Virginia Beach campaign rally where he explained the categories […]
Won’t Someone Think of the Children?
Wilmington City Council has been a backwater of favoritism and incompetence for so long that most of us ignore it, so it was easy to think it would molder out of sight forever. Apparently it won’t. Wilmington’s budget has been shrinking, making less money available for the minor, street-level, hire-my-relative corruption council specializes in. That […]
The Lost Cause Is a Lost Cause
The Civil War is back in the news, and it reminds us of what TrumpMerica’s counter-reformation is all about: Rewriting history. Yes, I know that’s a loaded phrase, because it’s so often used as an accusation when people try to massage the facts to achieve a favorable outcome for their views. But rewriting history is […]

How bad are things for Donald Trump? So bad that this morning he tried to use the GOP tax plan as a distraction from his bigger problems. As is common for Republicans, they don’t yet know what’s in it, but they’re sure it will help them to pass it. As haggling continues within the GOP, […]

For the first time in 51 weeks, today seems a little better than yesterday. Anybody who claims to know how all this will end is just guessing. We can’t know how Trump will try to fight back, how Congress will react or how the pro-Trump public will react. Already, after the news broke about Manafort […]

Everybody waiting for Mueller’s Monday reveal, but writing about it is difficult because nobody knows anything more than the bare bones. I’m skipping all the prediction stories — Mueller will be fired! — because they were written to fill a void, not because journalists make great predictions. The best thing I found was this clear-eyed […]

The big news of the day is, of course, the first indictment from Robert Mueller’s election probe. Today’s chatter revolves around who will get the knock on the door just before dawn on Monday. Paul Manafort seems to be the early favorite. No links because nobody knows anything more than that so far. Worried that […]
Mueller Drops Really Big Shoe
CNN is reporting that the grand jury in Robert Mueller’s probe of Russian involvement in the election has filed its first charges. It’s been sealed by a judge so we don’t know who it is or what the charges are. One CNN legal expert said the only reason for sealing an indictment is flight risk.

Sorry for the delayed open thread. Three reasons: 1) I’m still figuring out how to code this, 2) my gout is acting up and 3) I got sidetracked by a clip of Idina Menzel singing “Defying Gravity,” which, yes, throws my heterosexuality into doubt. It’s also a very slow news day, as evidenced by the […]

You don’t need ESP to sense there’s a much deeper story here. Kathleen Davies, Tom Wagner’s chief administrative auditor, has been on administrative leave for more than a year. Now she has created a campaign finance committee and says she will run against her boss as an unaffiliated candidate. The good news: A majority of […]
