Filed in National by on February 11, 2010 12 Comments

One of the benefits of being snowed in this week is that I’ve had a chance to catch up on some blog reading, and discovered that I had missed this really good video about missing the one year anniversary of the commitment to close Gitmo.

20 Years Ago Nelson Mandela Was Released from Prison

Does anyone remember when Mandela was released from prison? I was in Salt Lake City that day and couldn’t get to a TV or radio until after the day’s work. Mandela’s speech was clear and strong — and it seemed clear that this was the day apartheid died its well deserved death. And the day […]

Late Night Video — Rahm Emmanuel Apologizes

Filed in National by on February 8, 2010 1 Comment

The SNL version of Rahm Emmanue apologies, that is. This is likely NSFW, but strikes me as old school SNL — taking a famous person’s weaknesses, making them funny and using that the comment on a bigger picture. There is likely no chance that they could maintain this sharpness as a regular feature, but I liked this.

The Running of the Hypocrites

Filed in National by on February 8, 2010 8 Comments

Which is really the only name you can give the Federal government’s budget season opened by the release of President Obama’s budget blueprint last Tuesday. The plan calls for letting the BushCo tax cuts expire (except for people making less than $250K), eliminating the tax subsidies for the oil and gas industry, raising taxes on hedge fund managers; and it calls for investments in public education and college, domestic energy production, the beginning of a fund to finance health care for the uninsured. It is a pretty strong plan (I do have some reservations about some of the energy initiatives) that begins to retilt the playing field back towards the middle class.

Governor Markell Surveys the Political Landscape on CBS News

…and pretty much owns this interviewer. He talks about the Coons-Castle race at about the 5 minute mark and says nice things. The Gov is quite good at this kind of thing, I think — he needs a better questioner than this reporter tho. If you hang until the end, there is a piece on […]

Friday Afternoon Bacon Blogging — You’re Doing It All Wrong Edition

Filed in National by on January 29, 2010 13 Comments

Cooking your bacon, that is, according to this video from Chowhound (there is a quick commercial at the beginning): But there’s lots of ways to cook bacon and lots of partisans for those methods too. I’ve cooked LOTS of bacon for events in the oven — you get uniformly flat and crispy bacon (think of […]
