Friday Open Thread [5.30.14]

According to Politico, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton “offers a detailed account of the deadly attack on the American embassy in Benghazi — and a pointed rebuttal to Republican critics who’ve laced into her over the incident — in a much-anticipated chapter of her forthcoming book, Hard Choices.”

“The 34-page chapter is Clinton’s most complete account to date of the attack and its aftermath. Her tone is less defensive than defiant: Clinton takes responsibility for the “horror” of the loss of life in Benghazi, but puts it in the context of “the heartbreaking human stakes of every decision we make” — and she accuses adversaries of manipulating a tragedy for partisan gain.”

Good. A fighting Clinton is always a site to see. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that 55% of Americans say they support Hillary Clinton running for president. The same poll finds 66% of Americans disapprove of Karl Rove raising questions about Hillary Clinton’s age and health in advance of her potential presidential run.

Please Welcome our Newest Contributor, TheNewDeal

Please welcome to the fold our newest contributor, TheNewDeal. Mr. Deal is a local student who has been active in the political scene, and needless to say he is interested and involved in Delaware politics. His first post was just posted before this one, concerning the Washington Redskins and the our local Senators being one of the 49 that have signed a letter requesting the team change its name. Like many of us, he has chosen to remain psuedonymous, so we will all respect that.

Please welcome him there or here, and be nice. At least for the first few posts, anyway.

Some evil conservatives and crazy Republicans and Libertarians want to reimpose property restrictions on the right to vote, in that you must have to own some kind of property in order to vote. Such a desire is just further evidence that these conservatives, Republicans and Libertarians do not believe in democracy or live by democratic principles. Well, Professor Alexander Keyssar, Stirling Professor of History and Social Policy at Harvard University lays the historic and constitutional smackdown….

Yesterday, I posted the Gallup poll showing that Americans now support marriage equality by 55 to 42%. Digging deeper into that poll, we find a massive generational gap. Basically, the old people are just plain bigoted towards gays. Once they die off, we are all going to wonder why this was ever an issue. We are going to laugh at those opposing marriage equality the same way we mock opponents of interracial marriage.

Indeed, 61% of younger Republicans support marriage equality, according to Gallup. So that means that soon, within the next 10 years, the GOP platform and all GOP candidates will be pro-marriage equality as well. If they aren’t, not a single Republican anywhere will win an election. Well, maybe in Utah…

So, the war is lost for the radical Christianists who seek to turn America into a theocracy. Or is it?

Chris Christie just ended his 2016 hopes.

Chris Christie just ended his 2016 hopes.

Last week, Chris Christie renominated the current Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, Democrat Stuart Rabner, to another term in office. This was smart New Jersey politics, but not smart national politics, especially if he wants to win over conservatives in a GOP primary in two years. Nominating a Democrat to the Court? Yeah, that will not go over well among the true believers.
