The Weekly Addresses
President Obama touts the success of the auto bailout (yes, it did work, GM has repaid its loan) and continues after the horrid nest of snakes that comprises the modern day Republican Party for their obstruction. Governor Markell, for his part, keeps it light this week by discussing the Delaware State Fair in Harrington.
Matlock!
I am now convinced that everything you need to know about life (and politics) can be found in a Simpsons episode. I have been searching the internets all morning for a clip of this scene from the Simpsons where Mayor Quimby names a new expressway in Springfield after Matlock to appease senior citizens in the community. Well, with some polls showing that the lies of that Queen of Jerry Springerian White Trash, Sarah Palin, about death panels and Medicare cuts, had taken hold in a large segment of our seniors, to whom did President Obama turn?
The Taraz Ten
I wanted to pass along and highlight a horrible story concerning a friend of mine that was featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer yesterday. Jeremy Meyer and his wife Becky Compton are one of eight families who have spent the better part of the last year held hostage in Taraz, Kazakhstan while waiting to adopt their children. Indeed, Becky is still there.
Cheney in Hospital….Again
Former Vice President Dick Cheney was hospitalized yesterday afternoon after “experiencing discomfort,” according to the AP. Yo, Dick, that discomfort is called your conscience. It’s unknown is Cheney’s condition if related to his long history of heart issues (he was hospitalized in February for a fifth “mild” heart attack), but Cheney’s spokesman said the 69-year-old […]
Delaware Finally Ratifies 17th Amendment [Who Knew]
Delaware apparently never ratified the Amendment before now, which apparently did not prevent the Amendment from garnering enough states for ratification nearly a century ago. It’s kind of embarrassing, don’t ya think? Did we just forget? Was the bill for ratification lost in the desk drawer of the late Thurman Adams?
Breaking: Elliot Jacobson Out at the IC (Updated)
Elliot Jacobson is out as Insurance Commissioner Karen Weldin Stewart’s Chief of Staff. He will apparently remain as a “special adviser” for a little while. His demotion seems to be the result of his June 17 announcement that Blue Cross Blue Shield will stop requiring doctors to obtain permission before performing nuclear stress tests.
A Video Dump
I love crowd reaction shots of important moments at sporting events. And I love weather videos. And since it took me 3 hours to get out of Philadelphia this evening (it seriously looks like a tornado plowed through South Philadelphia, trees down everywhere, roads impassable, roofs blown off), I decided to post some reaction videos […]
General Assembly Update / Thursday June 24, 2010
Our General Assembly Expert, El Somnabulo, got called away unexpectedly, so you all are stuck with me today. First and foremost, as reported in the comments to the Book Burning post, SB 293 was defeated in committee yesterday. The theocrats and fascists will have to move to Texas if they want to someone else to do the indoctrinating of their children. Although, Texas may have a Democratic governor next year, so there is always South Carolina. Next, Governor Markell has accepted defeat on another of his cost cutting ideas: reducing benefits for future state employees (not current ones).
The Delaware Book Burning Mobile Returns.
Yesterday, the Delaware Family Planning Council had their first “Citizen Action Day” in Dover in SB 293, which our own ‘Bulo has nominated for “The Worst Bill of the Year,” and for good reason. Because they have a nice long list of books they want to ban from Delaware schools, and they want to use this bill to do it.
Conflicting Messages from your Delaware GOP.
There seems to be a confused message from Dick Cathcart and his minions on the GOP side of the aisle in the General Assembly. Since the budget was released yesterday, and posted online today, we have heard from the Republicans that this budgets spends too much, but it should spend more. Yet in the JFC, the Republican members offered no specific proposals to cut spending. How courageous of them.
TARP Bailouts Make a Profit.
All the taxpayer money spent to bailout the banks has been repaid, and based on the interest we were charging them, we are making a profit (or a surplus) of at least $23 billion.
Competence over Soundbites: Our Meeting with State Treasurer Jones-Potter
Last evening, Nemski, Cassandra and I met with State Treasurer Velda Jones-Potter. I am sure my colleagues will offer their opinions of the meeting as well, but I wanted to offer my take. I was impressed with her, and also the simplicity of her message. LiberalGeek has met Chip Flowers and is impressed with him and his plan to remake the Treasurer’s office. It looks like the primary for the Democratic nomination features two able and bright candidates with two different visions of the office and what it can and should do.
Beyond Parody
So Soccer, or European or Global Football (as opposed to American football), is now apparently an super duper evil horrible destructive LIBERAL socialist plot to take over America, except of course we liberals have already taken over America, what with our devious democratic elections and what not, so of course now Soccer is an super duper evil horrible destructive LIBERAL socialist plot to destroy America.
No, this is not from the Onion.
