General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show-Cinco De Mayo, 2011
Gotta get this in before everyone, including me, finds themselves wasting away in MediocreMargaritaville later hoy. And what better morning pick-me-up than yet a third consecutive day talking about Senate roll calls?? Thought that’d get the sangre flowing. Some stuff I just can’t make up. Turns out there’s a le-e-e-tle progress, but not as much […]
General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Weds., May 4, 2011
Remember the nice things I wrote about the opening up of Senate procedures? Seems like it was just yesterday…because it was yesterday. The Senate has already returned to the bad old days of putting roll calls online. Four non-controversial bills, one on nutrients management, one on manufactured housing, one on abandoned property, and one on […]
General Assembly Pre-Game Show: Tuesday, May 3, 2011
The General Assembly is back for a two-week sprint to its next recess. While there’s no way they’ll match the productivity of the pre-Easter session, which was downright historic, there’s gonna be quite a bit of action. Protection for those facing foreclosure, and consideration of the legalizing of marijuana for medical purposes are but two […]
Time To Make the Districts: The House of Representatives
OK, I admit it, I’ve let you down. Not that it’s the first time that’s happened. I’m not gonna have time to do a comprehensive analysis of all 41 districts and their likely permutations. However, I do have time to look at what George and Jerry might call ‘shrinkage’. Starting first from the basic premise […]
Why Gay Rights Supporters Should Oppose Senators Cloutier and Connor in 2012
Three years. In Cathy Cloutier ‘Have A Great Day’ time, we’re talking 1095 not-so-great days, give or take. Senator Dori Connor and Senator Cathy Cloutier cost gays three years of equal rights, free of discrimination. How is it, you may ask, that two senators who have sought and received endorsements from gay rights groups ended […]
Cathy Cloutier Wants You To Have A Great Day!!
Some things I just can’t make up. My wife and I are headed to where I work, and what should greet us at the intersection of Foulk and Grubb Roads? A large blue sign that reads: “Have A Great Day!! State Senator Cathy Cloutier 5th District”. That’s it. Wasn’t there yesterday. May not be there […]
General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Thurs., Apr. 14, 2011
The Senate passed SB 41 (Hall-Long), which would increase members of the New Castle County Board of Adjustment from 7 to 13 to reflect the number of councilmanic districts, and to require that each district have a member. I understand the intent of the bill. However, is it really in the public’s interest to have a Board of Adjustment that mirrors this less-than-august body?
Delaware Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Weds., April 13. 2011
Time to call the Diminutive Despot’s bluff. Tony DeLuca’s SB 50, which would putatively open the entire Senate redistricting process to the public, passed unanimously in the Senate. It was a cheap and free vote. Unless…the House Speaker, (a) recognizing the sincerity of the Napoleonic Martinet, with which he has plenty of first-hand experience; and […]
Delaware General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Tues., Apr. 12, 2011
Civil unions are but a week or two away from being legalized in Delaware. SB 30 passed the Delaware State Senate by a vote of 13 Y, 6 N, and 2 absent. Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf has already announced that the bill will be considered in House committee this Wednesday, and he’s made it real clear […]
In Praise of Senator Dave Sokola
Not only has Dave Sokola been a true progressive voice since he was first elected to the Delaware General Assembly, but his low-key manner has tended to make him underappreciated, even by many fellow progressives. Including, at times, me. But his successful stewardship of SB 30 and his quietly-eloquent statements during and after the debate […]
General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Thurs., Apr. 7, 2011
Today could be the day. Sen. Dave Sokola has placed SB 30, which legalizes civil unions, on today’s Senate agenda. That likely means that he has the votes for SB 30 to pass. Sen. Bob Venables (D-Mars) has introduced two last-ditch amendments to try to stop the inevitable march of history. One would require a […]
General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Weds., April 6, 2011
Perhaps the greatest thing about this blogging gig is that I get to wallow in self-indulgence. (However, not as much as Matt Denn does. Before I die, I want to write one sentence at least as funny as “I am confident that I am the only Lieutenant Governor in America who has had to utter […]
