The fallacy of Debt Limit “Brinksmanship”

The fallacy of Debt Limit “Brinksmanship”

The media continues to cover the “debt ceiling / budget negotiations” as if there are two sides trying to win concessions for their side.  As if the Republicans are simply using the threat of financial disaster as bargaining leverage. It’s all bullshit.  The GOP wants to destroy the world economy to own the libs and […]

Contract Bridge Players Overrun Rehoboth

Read this and answer a quick non-political question below the fold.

Bridge players from up and down the Eastern Seaboard recently competed in the second annual Rehoboth Beach Regional.

Tournament co-chair Kim Holm said about 600 players from Nova Scotia to Florida participated in the weeklong District 4 regional hosted by the American Contract Bridge League. Primarily, the players were from Virginia, Washington, D.C.,

McGuiness asks for new trial in Supreme Court appeal

Filed in National by on May 13, 2023 5 Comments

An appeal filed by former State Auditor Kathleen McGuiness over her misdemeanor convictions in 2022 is winding its way through Delaware Supreme Court.

In an opening brief filed in March, McGuiness asks for a new trial largely based on Brady violations she says were made by the prosecution. A Brady violation occurs when a prosecutor fails to provide a defendant or criminal defense attorneys with any evidence that is favorable or helpful to a defendant’s case.

McGuiness’ legal team argues in a brief that the prosecution failed to provide exculpatory evidence in a timely manner that would show McGuiness is not guilty of the conflict of interest and official misconduct misdemeanors of which a jury found her guilty. She was sentenced in October 2022 to one year level 5 incarceration, which was suspended for one year of probation for both convictions. She was also fined $10,000 and ordered to serve 500 hours of community service.

Are Tizzy Lockman and Bryan Townsend Sellouts?

Delaware most valuable progressive & REV take up that question in this week’s Highlands Bunker.  Also, what about WFP endorsed people who voted for Pete to be speaker?  Sellouts?  Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?     The Stomberg knows.

It’s just Karl and Rob in the bunker today as they talk about Karl’s new piece on why legislators sell out and how we can fix it.

A Clockwork Trumpage

Filed in National by on May 11, 2023 1 Comment

@paulwaldman1 1. One thing last night made clear is that not only doesn’t “fact-checking in real time” work on Trump, it’s actually JUST WHAT HE WANTS. Allow me to explain… 2. When he says “The election was rigged” or “I did complete the wall,” gets corrected and then says the lie again, steamrolling over the […]

DelawareLiberal Style Guide VOL 1

Filed in National by on May 11, 2023 2 Comments

I’m starting a list of preferred uses.  Free free to add to the list with your favorites.

Socialized Medicine:

Use “socialized medicine” in place of medicare/medicaid.     Eg. I can’t wait until I qualify for socialized medicine.   My mother in law loves her socialized medicine.    The Governor wants to take away the socialized medicine that state pensioners paid into and were promised with a fraudulent, expensive,  substitute.    (see below)

Disgusting:

Whenever using the name “trump” also try to use the word “disgusting” in the same sentence.   It sounds a little trite, but this really pushes the MAGATs buttons.   Polling confirms that they have strong reactions to disgust and disgusting.  Eg.  A disgusting blob, Trump slumped visibly in his chair.  & Even his ardent supporters view Trump as disgusting.

The DEGOP tries to cover its tracks by deleting its School Board endorsements page. https://delawaregop.com/school-board-candidates/ I should have taken a screenshot of that page when I first saw it.  Anyway, here is the Town Square article from April 22nd discussing the DEGOP brazen partisan efforts in these non-partisan elections. Conservatives marshal forces as school board […]

School Board Election Results Thread

Re Jose Matthews, but true all over. Steve Newton “comfortable enough margin” true … for today … but I can still remember the days when Jose’s vote total exceeded the standard total for two candidates in a close race. Celebrate, but realize they are mobilizing as fast as they can, and will undoubtedly learn from their […]

The Democratic Party is an absurd anachronism, run by absurd, doddering anachronisms

Filed in National by on May 9, 2023 2 Comments

VIA LGM It is sometimes said in defense of Dick Durbin’s maintenance of the blue slip rule that Republicans did not (completely) kill the rule when they were in charge of the Judiciary Committee. The very obvious answer is that Republicans had no reason to because Democrats frequently returned blue slips, a favor that needless to […]

I’m sure the sober centrists think “both sides” are at fault

Conservatives on Guns: In a country of 330 million people bad people are going to be prone to violence and get murder-y from time to time. So we, “the good ones” need more guns.

Liberals on Guns: in a country of 330 million people someone is going to be prone to violence and the tools of mass murder are easily available. So maybe we should make it a little less easy to get guns.

Moving Forward with Kamala

Filed in National by on May 7, 2023 2 Comments

I asked CHatGPT to translate this week’s economic news into a one act play, but include a role for Trump. This is what it came up with.

Title: Moving Forward with Kamala

Characters:

Joe, the President of the United States
Kamala, the Vice President of the United States
Tom, the Secretary of Labor
Janet, the Secretary of the Treasury
Emily, a journalist
Donald Trump, former President

Act I

Scene 1:

Joe and Kamala are sitting in the Oval Office discussing the latest job numbers.

Joe: (smiling) Today’s job numbers came in higher than expected, with the U.S. adding 253,000 nonfarm jobs in April.

Kamala: (excitedly) That’s great news, Joe! Unemployment fell yet again, to 3.4%, matching a rate not seen since 1969. Black unemployment is at an all-time low of 4.7%.

Joe: (nodding) For Hispanics it’s 4.4%, and …

Hope fades that Buckson will be normal as he jokes about Kenco/Suxco Secession

Filed in National by on May 4, 2023 25 Comments

Buckson claims his remarks were intended to be funny, but like nearly all conservative “humor”, it is lacking most of the elements that make things funny such as wit, cleverness, surprise, etc. Greg Layton If you haven’t seen the video Calvin Sparks posted yesterday of state Senator Eric Buckson advocating southern Delaware secede from northern […]
