General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Weds., Jan. 10, 2018
Here is yesterday’s quote unquote Activity Report. Let’s see…Ruth Briggs King carrying the Koch Brothers’ water on prevailing wage? Check. Pushing the cannabis report back until the end of February? Check. Pushing the School Consolidation Report back until the middle of May? Check. In a Bizarro Universe, some would call this progress. Not much in […]
Breaking: Resolution Calling For KHN Resignation Passes NCC Council
By a vote of 10-3, according to the WDEL story. Three no votes were KHN, Bill Powers and Dave Tackett. Karen Hartley-Nagle said prior to the vote that she would not resign. She delivered remarks after the vote, but all the council members other than Bob Weiner walked out and did not listen to her […]
BREAKING: Sussex County Council Defeats Right-To-Work Ordinance
Looks like the Koch Brothers will need to up the ante: http://www.wdel.com/news/sussex-county-council-votes-against-right-to-work-ordinance/article_e687391a-f564-11e7-9c7f-4b076b3677f5.html 4-1 with only Arlett voting yes. But the no votes were largely driven by a legal opinion, not b/c anyone in Sussex County experienced a change of heart.
Delaware General Assembly Pre-Game Show: Tuesday, January 9, 2018
I’ll save the ‘unfinished business’ threads for others. Here. Here. And…oh, never mind, the News Journal didn’t bother. Neither the House nor the Senate has an agenda today. Which gives me plenty of time to talk about three issues important to me and, I hope, to you. 1. Carney To Do The Right Thing. According […]
Kathleen Jennings Running For Attorney General
She will be a formidable candidate. Here is the story. Former AG Charles Oberly said today that he would not run and instead would endorse Jennings. Jennings’ candidacy also renders that of Tim Mullaney basically irrelevant. Not that it was relevant to begin with. So, will Sean Lynn run? Will the guy who John Carney […]
Delaware Political Weekly: Dec. 29, 2017 to Jan. 4, 2018
1. Rep. Steve Smyk Has A Challenger. With a real good resume…and a real bad website. His name is Jack Bucchioni, and here’s his website. If you can make it past the photo and that quality of life statement, you’ll find a high-quality challenger. Except…the photo on the ‘Meet Jack’ page is even worse. How […]
Open Thread Jan. 3: Rallying for the Right to Fleece the Rubes
Conservatives must have money to burn. That’s the only explanation for why some of Sussex County’s more cretinous politicians are still thumping the tub for a county-specific “Right to Work” anti-union law. They held a rally yesterday to support the bill, which already has been declared invalid by the attorney general’s office and therefore seems […]
And Then There Were Three…
…D’s running for the seat of retiring State Sen. Margaret Rose Henry. Former City Councilman Darius Brown today announced his candidacy, according to WDEL. Here is his campaign web page. He was previously a legislative aide to Sen. Henry, according to his website. Brown ran for Wilmington City Treasurer in 2016 despite no finance bona […]
Now, HERE’s Something The General Assembly Can Wrap Up In January
They can end the use of bail as an economic weapon against the poor. HB 204 (The great Rep. J. J. Johnson) has passed the House, has been released from Senate committee, and can be put on an agenda when the General Assembly reconvenes next Tuesday. The bill, which has been strongly endorsed by Delaware […]
WDEL: KHN Lied On Her Ethics Statement
Read Joe Irazarry’s story here. She defines the term ‘grifter’. I’m beginning to think she doesn’t even get to complete her term b/c of legal issues. Didn’t mention a loan on her required ethics form. Said there ‘was confusion on whether the money was a gift or a loan’. Turns out that was a demonstrable […]
Open Thread For Dec. 20, 2017
Alby is incommunicado this morning, no doubt hanging with some amis of his, enjoying a croissant avec beurre blanc, and trying on berets. I’ll attempt to squeeze my pieds into his, um, soul shoes. The Great Robbery Of 2017 is almost complete. The blatant transfer of more wealth to those who needed it least. The […]
General Assembly Prefile Profile
As the General Assembly heads into the second year of the current term, we are presented with this teaching opportunity. Primarily for the newbies, but you grizzled vets might learn a little something as well. We begin with the term ‘prefile’. The term refers to a group of bills filed prior to the legislature convening […]
