End Of Life Decisions

End Of Life Decisions

One of the things I value about Delaware Liberal is our community.  This isn’t the first time I’ve reached out, and I doubt it will be the last.  As I type this I am awaiting a call back from my father-in-law’s senior living apartment’s service coordinator.  It’s decision time, which means I’m scrambling for information.

My father-in-law took a fall about a month ago.  He seemed okay, and we were fortunate he was given a visiting nurse.  I LOVE Medicare!  Then yesterday, my phone rang.  It was the EMTs calling.  My FIL had fallen and was completely disoriented.  He was refusing treatment and the EMT called me before they had to call the police – because my FIL HAD to go to the hospital.  Of course, he did.  I spoke to my FIL on the phone – Luckily, he recognized me – but he still refused to go to the hospital.  I told him I was on my way over, then called my husband.  By the time we got there the EMTs had finally gotten him on the stretcher.  He’s now at the hospital and we’re awaiting test results.  Those that have come back have indicated he has shingles, a UTI, occasional cardiac atrial fibrillation and has suffered a series of mini strokes.  The hospital expects to keep him for three days.

So, here’s where I’m at, and where I turn to DL for advice.

Daily Approval Rating — Results for Senator Chris Coons and Poll for Congressman Carney

Here are the results for Republican Senator Christine O’Donnell, oh wait, I’m sorry, Chris Coons:

Strongly Disapprove – 47%
Disapprove – 24%

So a grand total of 71% disapprove of the neocon coward. 27% approve. 2% had no opinion or were ‘meh.’ Chris, if I wanted a neocon reactionary I would have voted for the witch. If I wanted a spineless shadow craver I would have cloned Tom Carper. My God, it just occurred to me. We have elected the short version of Joe Lieberman.

Daily Approval Rating — Results for Senator Tom Carper and Poll for Senator Chris Coons

Do you approve or disapprove of the job performance of U.S. Senator Tom Carper?

Disapprove — 67%
Approve — 26%
Meh — 7%

Our Delaware Democrats in Congress need to wake up and realize it is no longer 1995. Or 2005. Democrats without any spine, courage or principle are not in fashion. And it doesn’t win you elections. Senator Tom Carper prevented the Senate from taking up the minimum wage bill this month, adding to the long list of deeds where he has thwarted the Democratic majority or undermined a Democratic President. He should be condemned. The Carper contagion is not contained to one man, either. The supposed scholar Chris Coons has been infected. His two sins this week are legion and will be the subject of another post today.

It Begins: Rep. Darryl Scott to Retire

It usually starts as spring dawns in an election year. The retirements. Always there is a surprise. Last time, the surprise was Terry Schooley. This year, this might be it:

I have decided not to run for reelection this year.

The obligations of my family and career outside the General Assembly have changed, and it is apparent to me that I will not be able to provide my constituents with the level of service they require and deserve beyond the end of my term this year. If you do this right, it is the fullest part-time job you will ever have.

Daily Approval Rating — Results for IC K.W. Stewart and Poll for Auditor Tom Wagner

Here are the results for IC Stewart:

Disapprove: 81%
Approve: 10%
Meh: 9%

Not surprising. Conservatives dislike her because she is implementing Obamacare. Liberals dislike her because she is in the pockets of the insurance industry. Both dislike her incompetence.

Daily Approval Rating — Results for AG Beau Biden and Poll for IC K.W. Stewart

Here are the results for AG Biden:

Approve: 48%
Disapprove: 41%
Meh: 11%

Those who approve or disapprove of Attorney General Biden do so more strongly than those who just approve or disapprove. Of those who approve, 61% do so strongly. Of those who disapprove, 63% do so strongly. So a strong polarization factor, probably has something to do with his father rather than him.

Are Democrats Hurting Wilmington?

Are Democrats Hurting Wilmington?

That is the question posed by John Sweeney in the NJ Opinion pages today. There’s a fair amount of fluff in this piece, and does a thing I mostly hate from newspaper opinion pages — ask a bunch of questions that its news division is not in the business of helping to answer for its readers. Some of those questions are misdirected — schools are under the jurisdiction of school boards and the state, the city has little influence over how they operate or serve city kids, for instance. And lumping in all Democratically run cities with Wilmington’s story is equally misguided. We can start with the NJ’s own comparison of Providence, RI starts to show how inappropriate this is. A city that is mostly Democratic and is clearly back on a upswing — a city that still has real issues, but a city that the NJ compared to Wilmington in terms of effectiveness in addressing violence. Democratic-run places like Baltimore and Philadelphia also present very different stories — cities that still have more than their fair share of issues, but cities working at the kind of development and change that starts to address those problems. Interestingly, Baltimore has reasonable support from the MD GA, and Philadelphia does not from the PA GA (GOP controlled). But I don’t think that the city’s problem is just about Democrats — I think it is mainly uninspired (and oft-times lazy) governing.
