ADA’s Fiscal Town Hall: “Operationalizing” basic facts & Bryan Townsend
I’ve been wanting to write a longer post on the town hall put together by Ezra Temko through ADA and moderated by Paul Baumbach. I haven’t had time, but wanted to share this little piece.
We were fortunate to have Senator Coons represented on the panel by his Ian Koski, his Director of Communications. Koski impressed me as a very decent, smart guy – ludicrously down to earth by the standards of Senatorial staffers I’ve met in the past. At some point the conversation turned to dealing with an intransigent GOP, and although I was supposed to be the sober business person on the panel, my rabid partisan blogger self is a Mr. Hyde like presence inside me that, I now realize, I don’t have much control over.
So I said something like, “I don’t see how we can move forward until we put aside the sham bi-partisanship and just all acknowledge the simple truth that one party doesn’t have any interest in bargaining in good faith. And on a larger scale, we the public, the media, Congressional Democrats…. everyone has to start calling out the GOP when they are simply lying or getting facts wrong – like tax cuts work. We need to create an environment in which the truth matters.” That’s probably much more cogent than what I actual said.
New Boss, Same as the Old Boss
Yea! More development! I told you Tom Gordon had no interest in stemming the tide of overdevelopment.
Privatizing the Port of Wilmington
If you’ve been following the NJ over the past few weeks, they’ve done a couple of stories on work that Diamond State Corporation (the entity that runs the port for taxpayers) and DEDO have been doing to try to privatize (or get a private partner — not so sure of the difference between the two) the operations of the Port of Wilmington. Much of this discussion is being held outside of the public eye, something that should concern every taxpayer. Without public scrutiny or input, Diamond State has hired a management/financial consultant, put out a solicitation, received responses, shortlisted two potential investors (one a local group, the other not) and made a selection — Kinder Morgan.
Happy Hanukkah!
Happy Hanukkah to all our Jewish friends! The Pandora household is heading over to a friend’s house tonight for the lighting of the first candle and potato latkes! Can’t wait!
You can’t bargain with malevolent idiots
The President, Senator Coons, Rep. Carney – these men keep talking about the need for a “bipartisan” solution to the debt crisis. I get why they think it is important to say that they want a bipartisan solution, but I hope that they don’t think real bipartisanship is possible.
These modern Republicans are people who seriously believe that the government is bloated and what we need is another round of tax cuts to spur the economy and deliver a double dose of character building poverty to the ungrateful poor. They think any public dollar not handed to defense contractors is a dollar wasted on a hopeless parasites. They hate the President with such a white hot passion that they view ANY deal that he would agree to (regardless of how much is sells out Democratic principles) as unacceptable.
Looking at these malevolent idiots in action, I’ve become convinced that the next mid-term election is absolutely essential to returning the county to rationality and normalcy. The GOP needs to be swept from the field. When the GOP is utterly decimated, Democrats can finally stop talking about the importance of “bipartisanship.”
