Goodbye Frieda, and thank you.

Well known Delawarean environmental and peace activist Frieda Berryhill passed away today. She was well known in her efforts opposing nuclear power and weapons. She had turned 90 years old earlier this year. We are all a little less without her. I am going to post what appears to be an article about her that was posted on the UnplugSalem.org.

The Georgetown bin Laden

Filed in Delaware by on June 19, 2012 46 Comments

Joe Hurley:

Last week, Councilman Vance Phillips was the victim of a bin Laden attack. The terminology which will always live in American ignomy, refers to a spineless coward who sits in the darkness, and deliberately, and gleefully, inflicts pain on innocents in order to accomplish his deranged agenda. Pakistan had its bin Laden. Sussex County has one as well. …

Sam Latham’s defense of KWS makes labor look bad

Filed in Delaware by on June 15, 2012 77 Comments

At a time when Americans approval of labor unions is reaching a record low, this quote from Latham seems to crystallize the criticism people have for labor.

“She’s the only incumbent who wasn’t endorsed. She’s the only female statewide official. I think it’s a travesty. What does it say about the Democratic Party, the party of diversity, the party of inclusion?” said Sam Lathem, the state AFL-CIO president with Democratic clout. (grapevine)

So basically… she is an insider who, even though she stinks at her job, should keep her getting a paycheck because in addition to being an insider, she is also a woman. With friends like Latham, does labor need any enemies?

Friday Open Thread [6.15.12]

So most of you think Biden is biding his time for a run for the Senate in 2018, when, for the love of God, Tom Carper retires. A not insignificant number of you think he will run for Governor in 2016. A Denn-Flowers-Biden threeway collision? Please save us oh great Delaware Way (the corrupting tradition, not the blog).

Kowalko & Jaques to file “Single-Payer” health care bill

Filed in Delaware by on June 15, 2012

This is El Somanbulo’s territory. All I know is what I read in press releases.

State Representatives John Kowalko (25thDistrict) and Earl Jaques (27th District) announced they have filed HB 392, legislation that will provide Health Care coverage to all Delaware residents.

The legislation will provide universal health care coverage access through a system that will reduce administrative costs by minimizing and centralizing the current system that requires multiple payment forms and consists of medical decisions being rendered by insurance company bureaucrats with no medical background.

Crystal Ball: Denn takes early lead in the 2016 Governor’s Race; Biden’s Future

Filed in Delaware by on June 13, 2012 7 Comments

So it seems the supporters of both State Treasurer Chip Flowers and Lt. Governor Matt Denn got a workout yesterday and today. Both camps took turns voting early and often. At the end of the poll, after 24 hours, it’s Matt Denn with 53% to Flowers’ 43%. It looks like we will have another competitive Democratic primary in four years, although a lot can happen between now and then. This got me to thinking: what are Beau Biden’s future plans?

Internet gambling’s almost here. Guess it beats turning people upside down and shaking the coins into the seat cushions. And what would an internet gambling bill without even more sops to the racino industry? Hey, at least it’s a reverse-Robin Hood where the rich at worst don’t get their taxes increased and at best they get more blood money from the degenerates. HB 333(Viola) passed the House yesterday by a vote of 29 Y, 8 N, 4 Not Voting. There are no ideological lessons to be learned from the roll call, as supporters and opponents came from all political stripes. Did I mention even more sops to the racino industry? Yep, more $$’s for thoroughbred and harness purses. Oh, and something to do with waiving racinos’ licensing fees for slot machines.
