George H.W. Bush Died
FWIW – If you lined up all Republicans from most horrible to least horrible. George H.W. Bush would be among horrible but not terribly horrible like his son. And nothing like the abjectly horrible guy we have now. HOUSTON (AP) — George H.W. Bush, a patrician New Englander whose presidency soared with the coalition victory […]
Very high levels of intelligence
One of the problems that a lot of people like myself, we have very high levels of intelligence, but we’re not necessarily such believers. You look at our air and our water and it’s right now at a record clean. But when you look at China and you look at parts of Asia and when […]
Trump’s Tweets
I’ve said from the beginning that the press should not call them “tweets” but “statements.” We’ve given Trump’s statements through twitter a special status. Because they mostly seem like nonsense, and because they tumble out like jazz improvisations, they don’t get any real scrutiny from the press and public. As a result, they shield the President from the outrage that they should produce.
We’ve laughed at a shrugged off the most appalling changes in our democracy that Trump has made because they were made through Twitter.
Now Trump states on Twitter that he reserves the right to obstruct justice and use the power of Presidential pardon to free Paul Manafort if Manafort continues to obstruct the investigation into Russian interference in the election.
Trump reserves the right to obstruct justice by pardoning Paul Manafort. He said it on Twitter.
When voters have a legitimate choice – we win
The last unresolved House Race Of 2018 was won by the Democrat. The Dems flipped 40 seats. A huge wave. The aggregate Democratic House vote this year is 90.6% of the total votes cast for Hillary Clinton in 2016. See collaborationist Democrats? When voters actually have something to vote for during the midterms, we win. […]
Carney’s Pitiful Uselessness Laid Bare
This is some good blogging by Delaware Dem.
For me, it tends to support El Som’s assertion that Carney may be a dead man walking.
Read the whole thing, but this is where Carney gets his ass beaten raw by Vice Chancellor J. Travis Laster:
Nov. 28 Open Thread: We Are All Mr. Jones
We know something is happening but we don’t yet know what it is. Dominoes are falling in the Mueller probe, but even the most plugged-in pundits are struggling with what it all means. The consensus seems to be that Mueller played Manafort, perhaps to spring one of his infamous perjury traps on Trump. Rather than […]
Coons lends his empty “hopes and prayers” to the nation
Coons just got a chance to promote his prayer breakfast on Morning Joe. The MSNBC panel ate it up, of course.
Nobody seemed to recognize the irony of Coons extolling the value of praying with his GOP buddies every week just after stating that he is “puzzled” by why Mitch McConnell continues to block all efforts to protect the Special Counsel.
Coons…Puzzled
BTW – I missed most of Coons’ segment. I’m sure his commitment to bipartisanship is fixing many problems because… reasons.
Nov. 27 Open Thread: Tear Gas Si, Lettuce No
Welcome to Donald Trump’s Festung Amerika, where a salad can make you sick but you can put tear gas on your nachos. There’s no smoking gun linking the latest e. coli outbreak to Trump-relaxed water regulations — signers of the California Leafy Green Products Handler Marketing Agreement meets Obama-era standards — but it’s not welcome […]
GM Stock Up on Notice of Job Cuts
General Motors Co. will cut more than 14,000 salaried staff and factory workers and close seven factories worldwide by the end of next year, part of a sweeping realignment to prepare for a future of electric and self-driving vehicles… The Detroit-based company’s shares surged on the plan, which includes abandoning some of its slower-selling sedan […]
Barrish files his septennial – the DEGOP has died story
As noted by Cris Barrish, the DEGOP died back in 2010. [Ken Simpler was a cadaveric spasm.] There is no stomach for the GOP’s toxic stew of anti-science, pro-racism, and 24/7 “abortion is murder” chit-chat outside of Sussex. That said, Barrish filed another “DEGOP Obit” this time for WHYY. Three takeaways: Dave Lawson is a […]
Nov. 26 Open Thread: Depends on Who’s Being Hanged, Doesn’t It?
Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith has lurched from one racism-tinted gaffe to the next in the run-up to her run-off election against Democrat Mike Espy. As Trump prepares to stage rallies for her today so he can claim credit for her expected victory, let’s stipulate that I would join her in the front row at a […]
So what is the Dem strategy on Border Chaos?
It is clear that the Republicans have decided that ever more chaos on our southern border is a winning issue for them, so what is the Democratic strategy to address this reality?
A standard Democratic response would be to agree with Republicans on most points while trying to explain that Democrats would do everything Republicans would do but do it with less asshole-ishness. That’s the “we are less bad” strategy centrists Dems love to lose with. I’d expect Chris Coons and his prayer breakfast buddies to come out with some statement shortly that concedes that Trump is right on border security, but they’d appreciate him being more kind or some similar shit.
My hope, however, is that the Democratic strategy manages to veer away from the tried and failed centrism of the past. And will be more proactive on the battle economic ground issues that won them their seats in Congress and governorships. If the new members of Congress manage to move Democratic away from the Chris Coons’ of the world, and the defensive crouch that is the go-to posture for Democrats, they will be fulfilling the mandate they won on election day.
Regulations, Schmegulations
Shit covered romaine lettuce and this gas leak (that could have been a gas leak with a catastrophic explosion) are probably not related to 20 years of “cutting regulations” that are “choking businesses.” Right?
PENNSVILLE, N.J. (AP) — A chemical leak shut down the Delaware Memorial Bridge in both directions Sunday evening, bringing traffic on a major East Coast artery to a standstill on one of the busiest travel days of the year.
The leak stems from the Delaware chemical production facility Croda Atlas Point, located near the twin suspension bridges on a major route between Washington and New York City, Holloway Terrace Fire Company Public Information Officer George Greenley said.
The leaked chemical is ethylene oxide, a highly flammable gas that is a finished product stemming from methanol, Greenley said.
