Song of the Day 2/27: Albert Hammond, “It Never Rains in Southern California”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on February 27, 2023 2 Comments

The weather in the USA has been weird lately — 50-degree temperature swings, February tornadoes and snow in Southern California. Maybe the lyrics of this song need an update — it never rains, but it snows. Albert Hammond OBE moved from London to Los Angeles in 1970 as a singer-songwriter. By the time he released […]

Who do you think will succeed John Carney as Governor of Delaware? From the sharp crack of the starter’s pistol, the results were never in doubt. Bethany Hall Long is the DL readers & lurkers predicted next Governor of Delaware with 36%.   I’ve comment rescued a fairly cogent comment on the topic below.   […]

Anyone want to play “guess the state”? (This State’s) Christians could sue people who call them transphobic, homophobic, racist, or sexist  if this GOP bill passes (_____________) Republican introduced a bill that would make it easier for religious people to sue those who call them out as homophobic or transphobic, a bill built on a […]

Thanks, Bill Clinton!

The DLC/Clintonite/Corporate Whore version of the Democratic Party really gave the Republicans a multi-generational gift by passing NAFTA and declaring that the United States didn’t need any manufacturing jobs because “everyone can either learn computers or retire!” Not only does it allow Republicans to pretend to be the hero’s of the rust belt, but it […]

If you were walking in your community and saw a crushed soda can on the sidewalk, would you pick it up?

Let’s say there was a trash can 10 yards beyond the crushed can, so your commitment to this project would be minimal – would you then? If you were walking in your community and saw a crushed soda can on the sidewalk, would you curse the person who carelessly threw it down? Would your mind […]

I have emptied the trash and spam folders so any new legit comments that get auto-trashed should be more immediately visible and corrected.  We’re looking into what is going on.

Apologies to anyone who had thoughtful comments auto-trashed.  Those comments are important to us, so keep them coming.   White christan nationalist, vaccine deniers, climate change skeptics, and Putin lovers can fuck right off.

This Week’s Poll

The highly scientific integrity of this week’s poll is being besmerched (sp?) by someone who loves Tabatha Castro so much that they added her name three times.  And yet doesn’t love her enough to learn how to actually spell Tabatha Castro correctly.

The Straight Dope on Masks

Filed in National, Science and Health by on February 25, 2023 7 Comments

For some reason, a few MAGAts got tired of buffing their muskets and decided to weigh in on scientific matters that they don’t understand. Don’t be too hard on them — many journalists are clueless, too, which is why so many reported that a recently released meta-analysis concluded “masks don’t work.” That’s not what the […]

Just wow

@DonLew87 – Trump doubles down under oath on his ‘grab ’em’ statement. Basically says that’s how ‘stars’ roll. All the ‘stars’ out there, what say you? From Trump’s deposition in the E. Jean Carroll case… The lawyer didn’t have to lay a very elaborate trap for Trump to incriminate the shit out of himself.

Pro-Life Republicans in South Carolina propose a bill to give the death penalty to a woman for having an abortion

Filed in National by on February 24, 2023 7 Comments

At some point you have to wonder if they are trying to out-crazy each other for limited Fox News screen-time, or they ARE really this crazy.

Proposed SC bill could make abortion a death penalty eligible offense

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) -South Carolina legislators are hearing a bill that would make abortion punishable by death.

Abortion is currently legal in South Carolina, as the state’s Supreme Court has vetoed all proposed legislation to restrict abortions within the state. The Court’s 3-2 decision allows abortion to remain legal in the state until 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The new bill, “South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act of 2023,″ was pre-filed on Dec. 15, 2022. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Republican leaders have been hoping to reinstate a pre-Roe ban on almost all abortions at six weeks of pregnancy.

The bill seeks to amend the state constitution to recognize life as an individual person “from the moment of fertilization” and to define “person” to include an unborn child at any stage of development.

Will the economics of future wars make war less profitable?

Leaving aside the fact that our planet is burning to a crisp and the most murderous countries are just going to try and grab the most promising looking ash piles  – war seems less and less worth it. I mean, I’m no economist, but if it costs eleventy billion dollars to produce and man an […]
