Song Of The Day For Oct., 11, 2019: Crosby, Stills & Nash-Suite Judy Blue Eyes
From people who were there, this is a lot better on record than it was at Woodstock. Sure sounds good on record, though…:
Song Of The Day For October 10: The Impressions-This Is My Country
There are lots of reasons why Curtis Mayfield is on my Musical Mount Rushmore. Among them is Mayfield’s importance to the civil rights movement. It’s amazing that this song, 50 years later, is every bit as relevant as it was then. Not to mention, it’s just so damned catchy:
Songs Of The Day For Weds., Oct. 9, 2019: Two From Nick Drake
Although he wouldn’t achieve cult status until long after he had passed away in 1974, Nick Drake released his haunting Five Leaves Left in 1969. These are the first two songs on the album, and I think they’re both beautiful: BTW, Richard Thompson played some guitar on this album, and that sure sounds like him […]
Song Of The Day For Oct. 8, 2019: The Allman Brothers-Whipping Post
The Allman Brothers were one of several bands who made their name in the ’70’s, but who first emerged in the late-60’s. You still hear 1969’s ‘Whipping Post’ on Classic Rock radio. And here, except I’ve chosen the classic Live From The Fillmore East version, purportedly the greatest version of the song ever:
Song Of The Day For Oct. 7, 2019: It’s A Beautiful Day-‘White Bird’
The origin of the song, according to songwriter David LaFlamme, who co-wrote this 1969 classic with then-wife Linda LaFlamme: Where the ‘white bird’ thing came from … We were like caged birds in that attic. We had no money, no transportation, the weather was miserable (in Seattle). We were just barely getting by on a […]
Song Of The Day For Sun., Oct 6, 2019-The Beatles: Get Back
We had our 50th high school reunion last night, and it was really great. Everything I’d hoped for, and more. ‘Get Back’ was the #1 song nationally on the day we graduated from Brandywine. It would later appear on Let It Be in a slightly different form:
Songs Of The Day For Oct. 5, 2019: Save The Country/Wedding Bell Blues
Laura Nyro, one of my favorite songwriters from this era, wrote both songs. She originally released an over-produced version of ‘Save The Country’ in 1968 (Columbia Records was pushing for a hit), but recorded a solo version of the song for 1969’s New York Tendaberry album: The 5th Dimension had a big hit in 1969 […]
Song Of The Day For Oct. 4, 2019-The Who: Pinball Wizard
Yep, 1969 was the year of ‘Tommy: Hey, might as well toss in… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRD_gIoVOmY And one of the greatest rock finales ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqmC1T9rukk
Song Of The Day For Oct. 3, 2019: “I Want You Back”-The Jackson 5
This was #1 on the soul/r&b charts for 1969. Feel free to sing and dance along: OK, I can’t resist. Here’s my fave cover of the song. Not from 1969:
‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes: September, 2019
Fewer songs this month, some more mellow than usual, likely the result of my having been away for two weeks and not obsessing daily over music. I think you’ll enjoy what I did find, though. I just heard of this band. I mean, like, last week. FWIW, they’re my kind of band. Feel free to […]
Song(s) Of The Day: A Trifecta From CCR
Creedence Clearwater Revival put out three albums in 1969, each one featuring at least one all-time classic. From Bayou Country: From Green River (a great song in its own right): No, the bathroom is not on the right. From Willie And The Poor Boys (Walgreens ruined the title song for me), my fave CCR song […]
Song Of The Day: ‘Gimme Shelter’: The Rolling Stones
As my classmates and I celebrate our 50th High School Reunion this month (Brandywine HS, Class of ’69), I’m gonna present a month of great songs from one of the greatest years in music ever. Newsweek described ‘Gimme Shelter’ as ‘an erotic exorcism for a doomed decade’. And this article, must reading, which provides a […]
Song of the Day 9/30: Death Cab for Cutie, “Summer Skin”
From 2005’s “Plans” LP, this is Ben Gibbard’s elegy for summer, youth and innocence. It was never released as a single, but it’s one of the strongest tracks on an album best known for “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.”
