Filed in National by on April 13, 2012 3 Comments

Joanne Johansen is the first of two candidates to reply to my questions concerning the upcoming Red Clay School Board Election.  I have received an email from a second candidate promising an answer shortly. Joanne Johansen’s answers to my questions: Why are you running for the school board, and what are the top three things […]

Hearings Today on the DART Plan to Move the Rodney Square Bus Hub

Filed in Delaware by on April 10, 2012 7 Comments

Those hearings are at 11:30AM and at 5PM at the Carvel Building in downtown Wilmington. The current DART plan remove all of the bus stops at Rodney Square and then scatter them around on King, French, Shipley, Ninth and 12th streets. Which makes it very difficult for people to transfer between lines and provides a real disincentive for people to use the buses.

A Comment At Kilroy’s Sparks Another Education Post

Filed in Delaware by on February 25, 2012 9 Comments

I’ll post the original comment from commenter, Deliberate_1, first and then my reply. Click inside to read it. After reading this yesterday my head was spinning. First, this guy is really angry and defensive. I almost didn’t respond, but then Cassandra came over last night and we got to talking. What follows is what we discussed – a mind meld of pandora and cassandra. Pull up a chair, this is going to take a while.

Red Clay’s Referendum Meeting At Highlands

Filed in National by on February 17, 2012 12 Comments

First, no referendum PowerPoint, just straight to the talk. Which was fine with me. The superintendent, Merv Daugherty, began with opening statements, in which his point was… I’m not sure. He’s proud of our all schools. His door is always open. Everyone has his phone number and we can call him any time. Okay, standard speech given at all schools.

Koch-style Big Money Now in School Board Races

Filed in National by on October 22, 2011 42 Comments

I always like to check in on politics in Denver and Colorado, since that is where I cut my teeth in the political world. I’m still good friends with a number of elected officials out there and some of the Democratic Party officials. So I was surprised to read this today. My brother, who is a Denver Democratic Party officer sent it to me. It seems as though Koch-style big money has trickled down to the school board races.

Delaware General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Tues. June 14, 2011

Filed in National by on June 14, 2011 10 Comments

Casey Stengel, upon surveying the inability of his first-year expansion New York Mets to perform even the simplest of baseball tasks, once asked, “Can’t anybody here play this game?” He might as well having been talking about Delaware education officials who somehow, some way, managed to greenlight a charter school founded by a criminal with […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Thurs., Apr. 7, 2011

Filed in National by on April 7, 2011 30 Comments

Today could be the day. Sen. Dave Sokola has placed SB 30, which legalizes civil unions, on today’s Senate agenda. That likely means that he has the votes for SB 30 to pass. Sen. Bob Venables (D-Mars) has introduced two last-ditch amendments to try to stop the inevitable march of history. One would require a […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Weds., March 30, 2011

Filed in National by on March 30, 2011 22 Comments

The picture emerging from Dover is that of a dispirited Senate Democratic Caucus and the State Senate as a whole. The ongoing DeLuca saga and the DeLuca/Peterson imbroglio is wearing on the body’s members.

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Tues., Jan. 18 & Weds. Jan. 19, 2011

Filed in National by on January 18, 2011 1 Comment

Is El Somnambulo getting lazy? Maybe yes, maybe no,  but that’s not the reason I’m combining these two days into one post. Even by legislative standards, this has been the quietest opening of a session that I can recall. Very few bills and very little activity. In fact, judging by the latest Session Activity Report, […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Wed., June 9, 2010

Filed in National by on June 9, 2010 6 Comments

So many fascinating bills in committee today that the post-game wrap-up will be somewhat truncated. Here’s what happened. Every bill I highlighted yesterday passed unanimously, with the exception of SB 245(Sokola), which requires that student teachers undergo criminal background checks. Three senators voted ‘no’, the three naysayers open to speculation. Maybe Bernard’s buddy can fill […]
