Filed in Delaware, Featured by on May 6, 2022 10 Comments

The following petition was sent to all members of the Delaware State Senate this morning: “We are petitioning to respectfully and urgently request that the Senate Rules & Ethics Committee review the appropriateness of Senator Nicole Poore’s sponsorship of HB 355. We also respectfully request that this bill be reassigned from the Senate Elections & […]

Support Bush’s “Abortion Providers Protection Act”

Laws that create special classes (where crimes against them get additional punishments) are mostly bullshit virtue signaling – as in “WhAt? yUo d0nT zuPp0rt tHe p0LICE!?!?!”  I mean if you support cops, get them de-escalation training.  If you support teachers, fucking pay them.

But this special class bill that El Som covered by HB 234 and mentioned by El Som (here) strikes me as different.  Here he have a class that will actually need protection in the post Roe V Wade world.  If you attack someone working in women’s reproductive health care, you should have the book thrown you.

1. Felon-To-Be (?) Files For Reelection.  Kathleen McGuiness, of course, as a Democrat.  For State Auditor. Will any self-styled leader within the Party do anything to find a challenger to this unhinged and unethical public official?  Doesn’t anybody have an alarm clock over at Delaware Centrist Party HQ? 2. Gettin’ Mighty Crowded In SD 14.  […]

Song of the Day 5/5: Beck, “Loser”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022 is weak even by the institution’s abysmal standards. The best-known inductees are Dolly Parton (despite her request not to be considered), Lionel Richie, Carly Simon — I’ll let you know when we get to actual rock acts — and Eminem. True rock music is represented […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Thurs., May 5, 2022

Some interesting bills on today’s agendas.  But first, here is Wednesday’s session activity report. Make of it what you will. Only a two-bill Senate Agenda, but both are consequential.  SB 100 (Townsend) ‘establishes a Public Education Compensation Committee for the purpose of reviewing Delaware’s educator compensation structure and its ability to compete with regional school […]

If Democracy Is Dying, It’s From Neglect

Filed in National by on May 5, 2022 1 Comment

Sure, Republicans are trying to kill democracy. The question is why they’re bothering. Consider Ohio where, if you read the news accounts, the big story is J.D. Vance’s comeback win in his Ohio primary, supposedly on the back of a Trump endorsement. This narrative is bullshit. Yes, it’s true, but it misses the big picture. […]

Abortion Pills The Next Battleground: Medication abortion — a two-drug combination that can be taken at home or in any location and is authorized for use in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy — has become more and more prevalent and now accounts for more than half of recent abortions in the United States. If […]

Song of the Day 5/4: Graham Parker, “You Can’t Be Too Strong”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on May 4, 2022 0 Comments

A lot of critics think this song, whose lyrics provided the title for Graham Parker’s 1979 album “Squeezing Out Sparks,” is the best he ever wrote. But if you ever need an example of confirmation bias in action, consider how many people think this is an anti-abortion song. Parker has gotten pushback about the song […]

America Divided!!! Yeah, That’s Bullshit

Filed in National by on May 4, 2022 2 Comments

Abortion is a classic example of an issue where the Democratic position enjoys large majorities, and yet the media always elevates the radical Republican position to give it equal stature with the widely popular position. I guess, in a battle between telling the truth and lying,  it gets more click and eyeballs to constantly lie. […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Wednesday, May 4, 2022

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on May 4, 2022 0 Comments

It feels more than a little depressing to be living in a post-Wade world.  Not even so much because of the decision, but because of the acquiescence and unwillingness/inability to fight back from the Centrist Party.  Democracy is at stake, it really is.  What passes for the Democratic Party is not up to defending it.  […]

Star Wars Day – May the 4th be With You. …to anyone who celebrates it. Its Trump’s Party Trump’s pick in the the highest profile race of the day, the Ohio Senate GOP primary, (JD Vance) won the nomination largely due to Trump’s endorsement power. Trump did not endorse in the Ohio governor’s race, where Republican […]

How Delaware Codified Roe v Wade Protections–And Who Voted Against It

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on May 3, 2022 8 Comments

In 2017, Sen. Bryan Townsend introduced SB 5, which was designed to ensure that Delawareans would continue to be protected under Roe v Wade, should the Supreme Court do what it’s about to do.  It was quite the prescient piece of legislation in hindsight. Both the House and Senate subsequently passed SS1/SB5, also sponsored by […]
