Putin’s Placing Blame.  Arresting advisors for failing to successfully carry out his war.  More from the NYTimes: Signs of Russia’s challenges abound. Late last week, Russian news sources reported that Mr. Putin had put two of his top intelligence officials under house arrest. The officials, who run the Fifth Service of Russia’s main intelligence service, […]

Bitcoin Miners Came To Appalachia. Lied about the impact. Hmmm, sounds like a promising story line for the Justified reboot: LIMESTONE, Tenn. — It started as a low hum one day last spring. Then it got louder, and soon some residents said the noise was like a jet engine idling on a nearby tarmac. The […]

Shocked Stammers

Any single senator could have blocked the daylight saving bill from passing but many didn’t know it was even happening. Sen. Rick Scott, a permanent daylight saving time proponent who signed a similar bill into law when he was governor of Florida, said he would have gone to give a speech on the Senate floor […]

Song of the Day 3/18: Gillian Welch, “Winter’s Come and Gone”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on March 18, 2022 0 Comments

Yeah, it’s a few more days until it’s official, but it’s starting to feel like winter’s come and gone. This sounds like it came from the depths of the Depression — I can imagine the Joads singing it on the way to California — but it’s just more evidence that Welch and her partner, David […]

John Kowalko Beats the Holy Shit out of REV

Filed in National by on March 18, 2022 3 Comments

Heads-up. That headline may be deceptive. I have’t listened yet so I don’t know if Kowalko and REV get into actual fisticuffs.

After an update on the episode from last week, State Rep. John Kowalko joins Rob in the bunker to talk about his retirement, how progress is slowed in the state of Delaware, and some stories from his time in the general assembly.

Show Notes:

While there wasn’t much action this week, there is/was one potentially encouraging event. Here it is: 1. D Cyndie Romer Files Campaign Committee For RD 25. No, she hasn’t filed for the ballot yet.  But she appears to be a very worthy possible successor to John Kowalko. First, here is her LinkedIn profile.  What impresses […]

China’s Dictator Having Bad Year. Because no one dared tell him the truth over his Covid policy, and that the Chinese vaccines were inferior: But while we’re all justifiably obsessed with the Ukraine war…it’s important to note that there’s a superficially very different yet in a deep sense related debacle unfolding in the world’s other […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Thurs., March 17, 2022

First, a shout-out to the Delaware State News for their legislative coverage.  No, they’re not up to Matt Bittle levels yet, but the reporters have done a real good job of focusing on key bills.  A couple of samples from yesterday:  Municipal Elections.  Abortion Meds.  I very much like the fact that the reporters seek […]

Back with my new hip.  I’m taking great pains, and great pain meds (thanks for everything, Jacqi!), to bring you the stuff that I find interesting.  Feel free, as always, to share with us the stuff you find interesting.  It’s what the Open Thread is all about. Biden Labels Putin A War Criminal.  Because he […]

Song of the Day 3/16: Dolly Parton, “Jolene”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on March 16, 2022 6 Comments

Millions of people think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should stick to honoring musicians who actually play rock music instead of inducting rappers and dance-pop superstars, but it took Dolly Parton to call them out on it. Parton told the institution she was withdrawing her name from consideration, and she did it with […]

Zelenskyy Addresses Biden Directly

Filed in National by on March 16, 2022 4 Comments

In words and images, Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an impassioned case for US intervention in Ukraine by means of a “No Fly” zone.

The images of a happy successful Ukraine prior to Putin’s invasion, contrasted with the same views during the invasion with broken and bombed buildings and people were powerful.

The only captions….  “this is a murder” and at the end…”close the sky over Ukraine”

People hate the clock switching nonsense. Now it is gone (in about a year). Huzzah! But did you know we tried this 48 years ago and it didn’t go well? Amid a U.S. energy crisis in 1973, President Nixon swiftly signed a bill which put the U.S. on daylight saving time for two years, Prerau […]

It’s Not a Memory Hole, It’s a Cone of Silence

Filed in International, National by on March 16, 2022 5 Comments

The idea that issues fall, through some accident or fault of their own, into a “memory hole” is a blatant lie. It’s a false frame, a construction the media uses to hide the fact that it ignores certain issues, either completely or soon after they arise, and not because they wouldn’t appeal to an audience. […]
