Song of the Day 7/6: The Floaters, “Float On”
This out-of-left-field hit was one of the songs of the summer in 1977, mostly because of its slow-jam groove, not its silly lyrical conceit. I can’t be sure, but this song could have inspired Tim Meadows’ SNL sketches as Leon Phelps, the Ladies’ Man. It hit No. 2 on the Hot 100 and spent six […]
Boris Johnson – Not so smart
London (CNN)UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has set out his plan to lift most of England’s remaining coronavirus restrictions by mid-July, despite warnings from some experts that the current surge of Delta variantcases across the country means such a move is premature. Johnson said Monday that the “continuing effectiveness” of the vaccine rollout allows England […]

This “still on holiday” open thread is brought to you by the idiot who paid for a banner to fly over the beach here two times a day that reads: Everyone Knows #TrumpWon I’m not taking a picture of it and posting it because ‘Everyone Knows’ that’s what the idiot wants to happen. Anyway, I […]
Mo’ Better Democrats: Challenge These Legislative Miscreants!
We can argue about the merits of the recently-concluded first session of the 151st General Assembly. However, with a progressive Senate D Caucus moving full speed ahead, we learned who needs to be challenged, especially in the House, to do away with the Kop Kabal now and forever. Time and time again, we saw progressive […]
Song of the Day 7/5: Hippo Campus, “Way It Goes”
Guest post by Nathan Arizona Indie pop-rock tends to get overshadowed these days, but the dudes abide. In this case in a band called Hippo Campus. They make brisk, melodic, bright and tight songs, leading with guitars and some sublime vocals. “Way It Goes” is a perfect example. In fact, it makes a good song […]

Song of the Day 7/4: Bruce Springsteen, “Independence Day”
No, the song doesn’t have anything to do with the holiday, but it is one of Bruce Springsteen’s most personal songs, the one that most directly addresses the tension with his father that led him to stay behind in New Jersey when the rest of his family decamped for California. It was released on 1980’s […]

Today is worthy of celebration — it’s been a full week since Chris Coons last sold out his constituents. It’s pretty clear to anyone paying attention that the Jan. 6 insurrection was a two-pronged attack — 90% or so delusional goobers with lots more time and money than common sense, providing cover for a core […]
Song of the Day 7/3: The Doors, “Break On Through (to the Other Side)”
Fifty years ago today, Jim Morrison’s common-law wife found him dead in the bathtub of their Paris apartment, bringing to a close the singer’s years-long campaign of self-destruction and pretty much ending the career of one of the most popular American bands of the ’60s. Though frequent attempts have been made over the years to […]

Southern Pastors Give Up On Vaccinating The Flock. Mostly in white rural congregations: Polls have consistently shown that white evangelicals are among the groups most hardened against vaccination. The most recent, a June survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation, found that 22 percent of white evangelicals said they would “definitely not” get the vaccine, a […]
Song of the Day 7/2: Chicago Transit Authority, “Poem 58”
For the past 40 years, people have thought of Chicago as an easy-listening band that played lots of mushy ballads, because that’s how they wasted the bulk of their existence — raking in the bucks by pumping out gruel. The public mostly has forgotten that the band, known as the Big Thing when it formed […]
Sham Marijuana Legalization Has Failed – Long Live REAL Marijuana Legalization
Lacking social equity provisions, sham weed legalization failed in Delaware. Good. Next time bring back a real legalization bill by cutting the corrupt Delaware way out altogether.
As of today, it is legal to grow marijuana plants in your home or yard in New Mexico: up to six of them each, according to a law passed in a special session of the state legislature, with a cap of 12 plants per household. People 21 or older may possess up to 2 ounces (56 grams) of marijuana, and the smell of marijuana is no longer probable cause for cops wanting to search property, including vehicles.
New Mexico is the new model. Cut out the cops and fucking capitalist ghouls and let’s demand actual legalization. Not some bogus bullshit legalization.
Why Trump is Running
Trump says he has made a decision but based on Alby’s open thread – I think the 5th District of NY has made the decision for him. He must run again. Being a candidate allows him to raise money and siphon it off for debt coverage. The prospect that he mightbe President of the United […]
