How Political Patronage Does Real Harm
Famous medical axiom: “First, do no harm.” When doling out political plum jobs, governors should heed that axiom as well. Unfortunately, Ruth Ann Minner had a different axiom: “Reward my friends. Screw the public.” The disgraceful performance of the Violent Crimes Compensation Board demonstrates why Aunt Bee’s ‘governing philosophy’ does real harm to average Delawareans. […]
HB1 Signed Into Law
At 2 p.m., Governor Markell signed the open government bill, HB1 into law. (I’m sorry for my crappy photography, I just got a new camera phone.) He made short remarks about how he campaigned on open government. With him at the signing were Senator Karen Peterson, House Speaker Bob Gilligan and Representative John Kowalko.
Power Out in New Castle Area
There is a massive black-out in New Castle right now. The Governor is about to sign HB1 into law in Old New Castle. I think somewhere Thurman Adams is laughing his fool head off right next to an oversized knife switch.
HB1 Signing Today
At 2 p.m. Governor Markell will be signing the HB1 Open Government bill at the Old New Castle Courthouse. At least one Delaware Liberal blogger will be there. Stop by and say “hi” if you attend, I’ll be wearing a green t-shirt. Hope to see you there! OOGA! OOGA!
You’re Invited!
A message from Rebecca Young: Gov. Markell will sign HB01 into law on Friday, June 12, at 2:00 PM at the Old New Castle Courthouse Museum. All DL’ers are invited to attend and wear your green tee-shirts! I’m going to try to attend. Who’s in?
JFC Closed
See details here. The JFC is meeting today and Rep. Dennis Williams asked the media to leave. Apparently, they are doing a “work to rule” deal today — since HB1 isn’t yet signed by Governor Markell, it isn’t a law they have to abide by. Technically correct, but one wonders how long it will take […]
BREAKING: HB 1 Passes DE Senate 20 – 0 /1 Absent
@DEpolitics reports that the Open Government bill could be voted on very soon (as in hours, not days). EDIT: Senator Karen Peterson really ought to be congratulated for sheparding this bill through a Senate who still don’t quite see the good government possible with this bill. It is awesome that she is emerging as a […]

The Senate Executive Committee is scheduled to consider HB 1 tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Senate Chamber. Those wishing to testify should register to speak by contacting Mary Ann Hearne in the office of Senator Adams, the Chair, (302.744.4318). In addition to HB 1, Karen Peterson has two important FOIA bills on the agenda: SB […]
Who Does Paul Clark Think He’s Kidding?
NCCo County Council President writes a Letter to the Editor today, objecting to the characterizations of the NCCo Council government as being against Open Government: Council’s vote was solely based upon concerns that the county lacks the equipment to secure audio postings. Because of those who manipulate the facts for self-interest or humor, and then […]
Action Alert: HB 1 Scheduled for Senate Hearing
The new Senate committee meeting notices have been posted, and HB 1 is scheduled for consideration in the Senate Executive Committee next Wednesday. Karen Peterson’s SB 57 is also on the agenda. You know what to do from here.
An Open Letter to the NCCo Council
By rejecting Councilman David Tackett’s resolution to make it easier for citizens hear the proceedings in County Council via the web (live or archived video), you put yourselves on the record as firmly opposed to the cause of Open Government. Given the times we live in, restricting the availability of your proceedings demonstrates an incredible […]
